Coconut oil is often used to make cannabis edibles and medicines. It is easy to buy online, and is one of the best oils you can use with cannabis.

There are many different ways you can use coconut oil, and marijuana together. In this guide we will show you how you can make your own cannabis infused coconut oil at home.

You can then use this oil to make edibles, creams, soaps, lotions and much more. It is easy to do, and we will take you step by step. So first, let’s get down to what coconut oil is.

What is Coconut Oil

Coconut oil, is an edible oil that is extracted from the “meat” of mature coconuts after harvest. It is used in many ways, not just for weed infused edibles and cream, but it has many other health benefits too.

Because of its high saturated fat content, coconut oil can be stored for long periods of time at room temperature without spoiling. If taken care of, coconut oil can last for up to six months before it starts to degrade.

How Does Coconut Oil Work With Cannabis

There a many different oils you can use along with cannabis. For example, olive oil, which has around 20% in saturated fats, can often be used in medical marijuana capsules. Whilst coconut oil, is seen as a better oil for recreational use.

Saturated fats are the most important factor when choosing an oil to infuse with cannabis. Cannabinoids will bind to the fatty acids, the more saturated fats in the oil, the more cannabinoids it can hold.

Coconut oil is a big favourite because of a couple of different factors, the main one being is massive saturted fat content. With around 80% saturated fats, coconut oil can hold onto a lot more cannabioonds than most other oils.

Because cannabis lotions and ointments are usually used for medicinal uses, it is prefered by most, that there is a high concentration of the active ingredient. This is why coconut oil is so popular for making marijuana infused lotions.

1KG is very cheap, and should be more than enough for what you need.

Along with the coconut butter, there are some other ingredients and equipment you will need. Most of which you may already have in your home.

What You Need to Make Cannabis Infused Coconut Oil at Home

I don’t want to jump too far ahead, but this will help. You’re going to have a jar of cannabis, that you’re going to infuse with the coconut oil. Later on in the process, you will pour melted coconut oil into this jar of cannabis.

This will help you judge how much coconut oil you will need. If you have one 250ml jar, you will only need 250ml of oil. If you have have 3 x 2L jars of buds, you will need 6L of coconut oil.

Decarboxylated Cannabis

Before making any kind of cannabis edibles or oils, it is highly recommended you decarboxylate the weed first. This is a process of heating the buds, to convert the THCA into its more psychoactive compound THC.

It’s easy to do, and take about 20 minutes in the oven. You can prepare everything else, whilst the weed is decarbing. Take a look at this guide if you want to know more about decarboxylation:

Coconut Oil

Food grade, cold pressed coconut oil is best. You can decide how much you need by looking at home much plant matter you have to infuse with the oil.

You will melt the coconut oil, pour it into a jar full of your plant matter, and let it sit for a while. Figure out how much you need, then look online, or maybe even at the supermarket if you have one close.

Sunflower Lecithin

This is an important ingredient if you are using your cannabis infused coconut oil for edibles.

Lecithin will help the cannabinoids be digested properly. It will help smaller particles pass through your intestinal wall, and give you a much higher potency dose.

So if you are making this coconut oil, for edibles, then use lecithin. But, if you intend to make lotions and creams, the lecithin is not necessary. You will need 1 teaspoon per 250ml of coconut oil.

You will need good jars. You will place your buds, and coconut oil into these, and then they will sit in a slow cooker for a few hours. Make sure they are good quality, and will not break easily when heated.

You don’t want to go through all this work and then have them break with your oils in them.

Slow Cooker

A Slow cooker is used to slowly heat and cook food. They apply a low heat to a liquid, which then cooks the food inside it. Using a slow cooker on a low heat, will help the cannabinoids seep out of the plant matter, and into the oil.

The longer you leave the buds and coconut oil to site in the slow cooker, the more cannabinoids can be absorbed by the fats. So a low heat, for long period of time, is preferred and a slow cooker is perfect for this.

You will slow heat your oil and buds for around 6-10 hours.

Microwave/ Cooker

This will be to melt the coconut oil. The oil will be a solid at room temperature and it will need to be warmed up before you can use it. It won’t need to be heated much, just for 30 seconds or so at a low heat.

Strainer or Cheesecloth

After the buds have sat in the oil at a low heat for a while, the oils will need to be strained ( filtered) to get the large pieces of plant matter out.

Cheesecloth is best, but it will take longer for the oils to filter. You can use a strainer too, but this will leave bigger parts of the plant in the oils, and most people do not want that.

That’s just about everything, this is the easiest way to make cannabis coconut oil. Once you have these ingredients, we can move onto the part where you actually make the oil!

How to Make Cannabis Infused Coconut Oil

Making cannabis infused coconut oil is easy, and this is another reason why it is very popular. It is easy to find, online, or in health shops. Also the process of infusing it with your cannabis oils is very easy.

We will begin at the first step, and take you step by step through the easiest way to make cannabis coconut oils.

Decarb the Cannabis

Decarbing cannabis is nessecary to get the best results. You can read why, in our guide to decarboxylating, but for now, we will just get into how to do it.

Preheat your oven, at around 240°F. Whilst the oven heats up, break the buds you intend to decarb down into small chunks. Don’t grind it. Just make it easier for the heat to get into the whole bud.

When the oven is warm, take your buds, place them on some baking paper on a baking tray. Put this in the oven for 25-30 minutes.

Melt The Coconut Oil

This wont take much. Estimate how much coconut oil you will need, and place it into a bowl to go into the microwave, or saucepan to go on the cooker.

You only want to melt the oil, not heat it up! 30 seconds at a time in the mirowave, stir, and give it 30 seconds again if you need to.

When all of the solid parts of the coconut oil are dissolved, you can move into the next step.

Mixing in the Lecithin

If you intend to use you cannabis infused coconut oil the edibles, then it is a good idea to use lecithin in the mix. Lecithin will help cannabinoids pass through the digestive system easier, and increase the potency of the oil.

Using lecithin can massively increase the bioavailability of your cannabis, so if you are going to make edibles, use between 1 teaspoon, and one tablespoon, per 250ml of coconut oil.

The more lecithin you add, the more potent your oil will be. But it doesn’t taste great so the more you add, the less tasty the oil will be.

With this in mind, add your desired amount, ( or none at all if your making creams and lotions) and stir it into the melted coconut oil.

Mix the Cannabis With the Oils

Now your cannabis should be decarbed, your oils should be melted and mixed well.

Take the decarbed cannabis from the baking tray, and put it back into your glass jars. Pour the melted coconut oil and lecithin mix into the jar, over the buds.

Fill it at maximum 3/4 of the way full to avoid spillages. Cover loosely with the lid, to make sure air can still get in and out, but nothing is going to spill out.

Now this is done, your cannabis needs to sit in this oil for a few hours, at a low heat, a slow cooker is best for this.

Simmer in Slow Cooker

Place the jar in a slow cooker, and make sure the water level in the slow cooker is a little lower than the level of oil in the jar.

Firstly, place the slow cooker on high, with your jar in the water, and place the lid on top. Let this sit for 1 hour.

After an hour, come back, stir the mix very gently, and then turn the slow cooker on low. This will be left for around 6 hours. You should stir the mix every half an hour or so, to prevent scorching the oil.

Leave the oils sitting in the slow cooker on low, for anything between 6 and 10 hours. The more time it has to simmer, the more time the cannabinoids have to infuse with the oils. This will increase the potency.

When you are happy that the buds have sat for long enough, it is time to filter out the plant matter.

Filter out the Plant Matter

The oil will be hot, so be very careful at this point not to spill any on yourself. You can leave it to cool if you wish, but it is easy to handle when it is warm.

You are going to take the jar of cannabis and coconut oil, and pour it through a filter to take out all of the big bits of plant.

This is best done with a cheesecloth. Use a sieve, over a bowl, and place the cheese cloth over it.

Pour the contents of the jar into the sieve, and the cheese cloth will filter out the bits of buds and leaf. This will leave you with a fine oil, called cannabis infused coconut oil, you did it.

Squeeze the cheese cloth as much as possible to get all of the oil out of it.

Put this oil into a glass jar, or airtight container, and store it in your fridge. After a few hours, the oil will return to its solid form. From here you can use it for many different things.

What Can You Use Cannabis Infused Coconut oil For

You can use this oil for pretty much anything. Add it to your foods and drinks, make lotions and creams. You can even use it to make shampoos and soaps!

Cannabis infused coconut oil is the base to many cannabis based products. It is so easy to make, and you can store it for a long period of time.

It has been said lotions can treat joint and muscle pains, and edibles can treat ailments from chronic pain, to epilepsy.

You don’t have to use buds either! You can use left over trim from harvest to make excellent oil. This will reduce waste, and get more out of your harvest. So why not make some, and let us know how you do.

  1. @rokendas yep, it does take a little more weed to make edibles but much like you are describing, they were and are a game changer for me. I’m still tweaking my morning dose to find the balance between not too high and good pain relief but I’d agree that it does wonders for sciatica.

  2. @monkeydo I nearly tagged you into my reply given what you said a few weeks ago – I didn’t even realise I wasn’t hurting until I realised I’d forgotten my tablets this morning. It’s bloody marvellous but I probably need to work on the balance removed link grow more plants 🙂

  3. Posted by: @rokendas

Also, I didn’t feel any sciatica pain for about 7 hours, which is a huge win

I hear that bro👊. I use the infused oil in my coffee every morning and my back isn’t an issue these days unless I’m being stupid. Morning starts with about 40-60mg of THC via infused avocado oil. Edibles work excellent for all sorts of aches and pains, and they are a little fun too.

  4. @rokendas Have you been shopping behind your own back.lol I’ll need to have a look into it and see if I can get some made too, iv been bothered with sciatica this last few year but it’s more or less better now, I can still feel it coming back now and then. I think thats the most pain iv felt in a long time when the sciatica was at it’s peak, but it’s likely my own fault because I waited over a year before going to get help, I kept going untill I couldn’t go anymore, not the smartest thing iv ever done.lol
I wouldn’t mind a go at making some of this sometime tho. Jelly sweets that fix your pain aswell, you cant get any better than that 🙂

  5. @stootie It was really good fun making them to be fair mate – you should give it a go. I’ve never made anything like them before so I felt like I was in Mr Haribo’s lab 🙂 Also, they were really nice so there are not many left but we had a very chilled day and an extremely solid sleep! I checked my amazon account this morning and I ordered 3 lots of larger moulds last night, so I must want to make some more…..
Also, I didn’t feel any sciatica pain for about 7 hours, which is a huge win Fist Bump
I’d highly recommend it as an entertaining stoner task Thumbs Up

  6. @rokendas Nice job man, they look amazing 😎 I only have one complent, seeing them has left me wanting jelly sweeties now and I dont have any ☹️ 🤣 I wish I had the drive to try making something like that too but by the time iv finished work I cant be arsed to do anything but sit on the couch, drink coffee and vape weed.lol good stuff man enjoy your sweeties 🙂 👍

  7. Thanks! Those instructions are great. I made my first little batch of infused coconut oil and sour gummies today and they are incredible 🙂 I need to get some bigger moulds for next time though 🙂

I think I may have had too many – let’s see how this goes   Bud Thumbs Up

  8. @cloudy_kitchenno it didnt turn me off of them, but made me more aware, just glad i didnt share them with anyone.I need to get it right so i can use them for sleep and pain. I think I watched one of your videos when making it and as far as the amount i used I probably got that off of another video where they probably used trim and more oil/butter

  9. @twisted1its all good bro, I hope the experience didn’t put you off edibles or anything. Trust me, a lot of people think they have to use a load of buds/trim in a batch of oil or butter, but if you decarb, infuse, and strain it well then you do not need more than 10-15g per 2 cups. I eat edibles and cook with infused oil almost every day btw

  10. @cloudy_kitchenthank you for the info ill use it and melt the rest into more butter to get it down closer to where i need it. It was not enjoyable at all. I still have 11 cookies left lol. and ill start using 10 – 15g per 2 cups from here on out.

  11. @twisted1I use 10-15grams per 2 cups of oil/butter if I’m using buds, if I’m using trim I’ll use an ounce or so in 2 cups of oil/butter. Honestly you don’t need that much to make great edibles. I have made batches of 1 cup of oil with just 5 grams of buds and it still hit me when I had the edibles. Decarbing is especially important tooIf you know the THC percentage of your buds then I can help you with working out an approximate portion size in terms of mg.If you used 3 ounces (84g) and it has a THC % of 20%, then, your cup of infused butter will contain around 12-13,000mg (at an over-approximation) of THC which works out to be around 500mg PER COOKIE (if you made 12 with half a cup), no wonder you felt a bit intense lol

  12. how much bud do you use in 1 cup of butter? I used 3 oz ground up it was like buttery plant while it cooked I was able to squeeze out a cup i may have started out with a little more than a cup of butter,  I made 12 cookies with 1/2 cup of canna butter I ate one and it was a little too intense. So how much do you all use?

  13. Posted by: @lovemygreens @cloudy_kitchenThanks cloudy_kitchen, great tips, does the cbd oil you make not turn solid when left out?

Not if your oil is winterized… The containers of hard, solid-at-room-temperature coconut oil still have some components in them that crystallize and solidify at room temperature.. oils that stay liquid (e.g., canola, olive, MCT, grapeseed, etc.) have been processed to have those compounds removed, or lack them all together. So it would depend on the oil that you use as your base.. coconut oil is great though.. it melts at about 26C so, doesn’t take much to liquefy anyways, and is one of the, if not the best carrier to use, IMO. One way to prevent your bud from getting in the oil and having it be a pain in the ass to strain is to wrap your decarbed ganja in a cheesecloth and set in the slow cooker full of oil, like a bag of tea. Give it a good squeeze every hour or so to make sure all of the cannabinoids are being released into the oil. After it’s done, just pull it out, squeeze out the oil, and toss. Easy peezy.

    Jar o' oil
    Oil

Here is a batch I made with my Magic Butter Machine a few weeks back. Also a very good way to go but, at $200 Canadian, a 15$ crockpot is probably best, lol.

  14. @lovemygreensI have made CBD oil with MCT oil (unflavoured coconut oil) basically the same way as this and it works well. I used CBD isolate, not buds, but I’m sure it would work either way. You can put the buds straight into the slow cooker but its a bit of a hassle to get all of the oil and buds out, in my opinion, it is easier to do a double-boiler style infusion in a mason jar or other container like this:

    IMG 20190722 202010 (1)

  15. Put it in jars first will help not burn to buds or the oil you see. Much like how you melt chocolate to prevent it from burning 🙂

And yes, same principle for cbd or THC weed mate

RSO is made a little different, it is dissolved is isopropyl alcohol, then, the alcohol is evaporated, leaving behind the oil. Which is more potent than coconut oil. You can mix RSO with coconut oil instead of using buds though. This can give you a more accurate dosage if you’re using it medicinally.

    Guide to making RSO

  16. This is fantastic, thanks Macky! This is one of the main reasons for me to start growing to make some hand cream to help with eczema so glad I spotted this.Just a question or two…could you just put the buds and oil straight into the slow cooker or is it a must to put them into the glass jars? Hate to think the jar could break.also, is this the same method to make cbd oil (if I had cbd only buds) so there’d be no need to buy from shops anymore?Lastly is this the same method for making the RSO oil I’ve heard people talk about?  this site is the best, keep it up!

  17. @mackyMore to come, I cant wait but I will  I can make the lotion or Balm what ever they call it  tonight it may work better using it when I lay down tonight and rest. Thanks Brother for all the hard work you put in here

  18. This is step one though 😉 There is lotions and creams to come next, it just seems this is the base for most of those things so knowing how to make this is important for all those guides 🙂

Hope fully be done by the end of the day
