Day 1: Thursday 23rd July 2020

Put 4 seeds into germinate by using the paper towel method. Will leave alone for 36 hours and then re-check for taproot.

Day 3: Saturday 25th July 2020.

Checked on seeds. 2 have shown their taproot, just, while the other 2 there has been no change. Checked towel is still moist.

Day 4: Sunday 26th July 2020.

Checked seeds again, still the same. (Could seeds be defective? How would I know? )

Day 5: Monday 27th July 2020.

Still no more change to seeds  Thinking of just planting in a jiffy pellet in a seedling mix to encourage growth.

Anyone ever done this?

@schroomy cheers for the reply bro.

Germinated 4. 2 have slight popped and just showing the taproot while the 2 blue cheese fem theres been no change.

I'm got them between 2 plates wrapped in clingfilm next to my PS4 so its definitely warm.

I've got some jiffy pellets and some seedling mix as well. Would I be better to put them there?

Just anxious mate, this is my first grow with proper equipment and medium so wanting to smash it lol

@new-at-this 5 days is a bit long mate. I would expect to see something by now.

Plant them into the medium if you havent already mate. Give them a few days in some soil to see if they move.

Little update for the day.

Soaked jiffy pellets in water and prepared them for the seeds that were slow in germinating.

20200728 122707

Ended up placing the pellets in a small tub and mist spraying the pellets then locking them in a ziplock bag.

20200728 122947

Placed it in the tent where the prepared soil has been since this morning.

20200728 124121

My thermometer says its 24°C so ive put a fan in to lower the temperature and I'm gonna keep checking it throughout the day to allow it fresh air and keep it moist.

Hopefully this works or I may need to cut losses and try new seeds Cry

Little update today.

The 4 seeds I put into pellets have had no change at all. Temperature stayed constant throughout but have seen no change. That's the first reason to be pissed off.

20200729 121446

So decided yesterday to pop 3 more seeds into some water then paper towel again but this time I just put the paper towel in a ziplock bag and created a bag some and left it overnight.

Checked this morning and 3 are showing so just planted them in some plastic cups and created some bottle domes. Hopefully this way shows much better promise.

20200729 121931

I'll keep check on them throughout the day and hopefully have some good news in a couple days. Bud knows I need some.

Ps. Has anyone had experience with Seedsman? That's who I went with for my seeds this time based on some great reviews on Reddit.

The first grow i did a few years ago, i bought from Royal Queen Seeds and they came dark brown and quite hard and germinated no probs.

My seeds from Seedsman seem quite light, almost immature ( I'm going to get some pics of them today so I can hear from others but needless to say im a bit gutted. Have emailed Seedsman but dont really expect anything. Think I may just buy some new seeds from another bank. Any suggestions?

i agree with the boys ive never had an issue with seedsman and im growing a bunch of them out next. you look to be on the right track now mate you need to keep the humidity up the bottle domes will do that perfect. and it take s time for them to sprout its not an overnight thing, it could take up to a week before they decide to show themselves, you just need patience broda Thumbs Up

I did wonder about Seedsman because every where I look they were being recommended and they were great throughout the order. Bad workman blames his tools I suppose lol.

Cheers for all the replies guys. Hopefully we get some results with this and we can get cracking!

Still no change in either the pellets or the cups.

Took the domes off yesterday and turned fan on as was quite a high humidity so wanted to lower the temperature.

Checked this morning but no luck.

This is after being watered. I've put the domes back on as it's quite cool in the tent.

I'll keep grinding away. When we start its gonna be so easy eh?

Most stressful week ever lol

@new-at-this germination should be a very simple step. If this batch goes bad please let us know before you plant anymore seeds so we can help you succeed.

@monkeydo

Never had to worry about germination before. First time I got some clones from a friend so this is alien to me.

I keep thinking I must have messed up somehow but not sure how.

If i dont see any shoots by Saturday then will definitely ask advice before I germinate more to see if I'm doing anything wrong.

Cheers for the offer of help mate

Decided to cut my losses with the seeds I've tried to germinate.

Not entirely sure what I did wrong, the first 4 I did, i put in a glass of room temp water for about 16 hours then when i tapped them they sunk to the bottom straight away so i wrapped them in paper towel into a ziplock bag then covered them with 2 plates?

Checked them the next morning and 1 had popped, the other 3, nothing so left them for another day, same conditions but still nothing. Decided to stick in pellets anyway but so far nothing.

Then started another 3 but this time when I put them in water, i checked on them 3 hours later, tapped them and they all sunk straight away so I put them in paper towel and into a ziplock bag, blew into the bag to create a dome then placed in a drawer next to the boiler.

Next day, same again, 2 showing slight taproots, 1 had split its shell so I planted them in all mix but that was 3 days ago and still nothing.

I've kept the soil moist and temp is round about 22°C with humidity about 65% and I've been using a lamp with an incandescent bulb on the cups as I dont have a cfl or a t5 bulb. Would I be better to purchase one or can I use my main light?  I've heard the dual spectrum can be quite powerful on seedlings so I'm not too sure what to do?

Took all my seeds out to check and I must have been high when checking them out cause they look fine.

I'm going to buy some light mix tomorrow for the new seeds I'm going to germinate. I've heard that all mix can be a bit harsh on new seedlings so going to fill 2/3 of cup with all mix and 1/3 light mix to aid the new beans.

Would I be better sticking with the paper towel method or trying for rapid rooters?

What is everyone's preferred germination method?

Sorry for the lengthy post/rant. Just a bit pissed off with myself.

@new-at-this I usually just stick the seeds in moistened soil and cover with a dome after a few days i usually see the first  ones popping out need to keep the soil moist but not soaked, but there is always a straggler or 2.  I have used the paper towel method  just placed my seeds between a folded paper towel and in a ziplock bag  then daily i hold the bag over a light and look to see if i see a tap root, I never presoak my seeds but that is just how i do it.  as far as light goes I use my main lights raised up around 36 inches or more and set the seedlings off to the side where it is a little weaker and gradually move then towards the center as they get used to it.

@new-at-this ive lost a few seeds  usually its my fault i get the soil to wet or let it get too dry  and have to pop another  just had that issue so i used the paper towel method

ill give the seeds a 2 to 3 days after the rest popped before i try to start more

Honestly when i first started i never got one seed to pop, so i did the easiest method that gave me 100% gemination of my seeds, that is put the seeds in a glass for about 12 hours until you can touch them and they sink. Then straight in to the growing medium. It is so easy and it will help if you are a new grower. Just remember not to deep only like 2 times the seeds size. You know less steps mean less can go wrong, but if you want to continue paper towel then good luck friend Wink

Morning guys.

Still nothing today. Temp has stayed constant in the tent at around 20°C.

Think I'm getting no where. I'm going to germinate some more tonight by paper towel and then put them in the new seedling mix I bought when they show their roots.

When I transfer them into the starter pots, am I better putting my HPS on as well. My mate told me they dont need that type of light just now, that I'm better waiting until they show their cotyledons before using it. Is he right or can I just start my 18/6 schedule straight away?

I'll be putting my steps for germination up on the diary later , just so you guys can keep me right lol Thumbs Up

@new-at-this if you are going to use the paper towel method I’ll share how I’ve done it with very high success rate. Soak the seed in water until they sink when touched, usually 2-6 hours. Fold the paper towel in half and wet it. Lay it flat and put the seeds on one end with a couple cm between them. Fold the wet paper towel over the seeds. The critical thing here is to get the correct moisture level in the paper towel. I use a dry towel to blot the wet towel till it is like a moist sponge level of wetness. It’s very important that it’s not overly wet, like a sopping wet sponge but more simply moist. If it’s slightly wetter than a moist towelette or new package of baby wipes you are perfect. The paper towel should not drip if you hold it up from one corner. If it does it’s too wet and the seeds can drown. Place the paper towel in a plastic bag and simply leave it alone in temp at 22-26c and check daily. When you have about 10mm tap root it’s time to plant that seed. Plant the taproot pointing down covering the seed head with 3-4mm of soil. The seedlings should show itself within a couple days later this way. Before you plant your seed in the soil it would be good to water the soil well to flush out any excess of nutrients. Seedlings are very delicate and cannot handle much nutrients. I hope this all makes sense.

Decided to put the cups under my light this morning rather than just the incandescent bulb and do my eyes deceive me?

20200731 160854

Sorry for the quality but is that a sprout? If someone can confirm I'm not going mental?

The other 2 I haven't seen anything yet and the soils been watered enough so just going to put the domes back on. Still got a few hours of its light left today so will update here later.

That does look like a seed breaking ground. Keep the soil just slightly moist and she should do well.
