No it's not!
But don't take my word for it... check out this excellent vid from Shane at Migro in collaboration with RX Green Technologies.
They've done a study showing that flushing has negligible effects on final product taste, potency, and overall quality.
This was actually demonstrated in a 2017 master's thesis by a student at the University of Guelph (Jonathan Stemeroff) as well. Check out sections 4.4 and 6.2 in the paper.
Great vid TG. This study was based on coco, what are your thoughts on soil? When im growing using pre Bagged soil I feed lightly 1/4 - 1/2 strength allowing the plants roots to search thru the soil and find what it needs to make up the balance of the nutrients extending the usefulness of the soil until harvest. by Using Ph water only I try to ensure that it only gets what it needs and that im not forcing excess chelated nutrients in to it at the end, not actually starving the plants but actually trying to let them finish more natural.
I flush only when there is a issue to rid the soil of excess readily available nutrients and return the soil Ph to a manageable range to eliminate Lock outs. I dont believe you can flush all the nutrients from soil.
With my super soil I only add teas (compost and worm castings) to feed or increase the micro beasties. but i will add a organic nutrients in the form of fish Hydrolysate Molasses + seaweed during veg and Seaweed Molasses and a high phosphorus bat or bird guano during early to mid flower once every week or 2. I try to avoid any thing thats been chelated, which kills off the micro organisms that are responsible for making nutrients available. but i do use a very small amount of fulvic acid (not good for the micro beasties) when i mix the soil to assist in having readily available nutrients, (still working on finding a good balance of readily available and slow release nutrients) . I also add a table spoon of Bat guano Blood and bone meal at the bottom of the container covered with a inch of compost, a middle layer of the same but mixed in Worm castings and a dusting of alfalfa, neem seed or alfalfa what ever i happen to have on hand (Nitrogen) with worm castings on top, to allow the roots to find what it may need a boost of. I believe the plant will search out what it needs and bypass what it doesnt need as it does in nature, i eliminate the teas in the last 2 weeks.
Lol hope you can understand what im getting at here I believe using the Ph water only at the end is a beneficial thing to do for soil growers. but i have no experience in coco to know what may be left in the medium after a flush but im not a subscriber to starving them at the end.
Sativa to change the things I can, Indica to accept the things I can’t.
Yeah sorry, missed your guys questions there @TallShayShay & @twisted1. Twisted basically nailed it - my opinion on flushing soil, at least a super soil like mine is that you can't ever really 'flush it' - that's kinda the point. I have effectively never 'flushed' in the purest sense, i.e., switched to 'pure' water for the last ~2 weeks - I use 'pure' (@ ~210ppm), pH-adjusted water the whole time and usually end up with about 1500-2000ppm of TDS in my runoff right at harvest so, there is a decent amount of shit still in there. My bud always smokes great though - never harsh, burns white, smells great, etc etc. So, in my personal opinion, and through my own anecdotal experience, I agree with the studies in that flushing has negligible effects on the objective quality of the bud.
That said, flushing does work great to 'reset' the medium when there is funky shit happening in the root zone but, that's a different thing all together.
