After a wake and bake, I was thinking about how we get high THC levels in a plant. There are lots of genetics involved of course, but once you've got your fav strain growing, what is it that makes it have high THC?

My thought is that it might have to do with how long the plant can sustain THC production. The longer it can run the assembly line, the more THC goes out the door.

If there are high THC cultivars out there with short flowering, I'd like to hear about them.

And a corollary to this thought was how cultivars without "high" THC levels can still be strong. Blue Dream isn't incredibly high but still hits me hard. My thought was that as the THC receptors in the brain accept either THC or non-psychoactive cannabinoids, but not both at the same time, means that the THC molecules are producing something akin to a "chord" on a piano, some notes struck, the rest silent.

That thought would also go out the window if there were a strong cultivar with loads of non-THC cannabinoids and not too high THC. I'd like to hear about those too.

because THC is NOT the most important part of a cannabis plant to get you high... if all you want is high THC then you have been brainwashed by bro science... imo.

some need higher THC for medical reasons only,

@lousytourist good genetics and good growing practices,   people need to stop chasing the high.  basically means your really using cannabis for what it is.

If THC isn't the most important part, what is?

Most stoners that have also been growing for a while would definitely say that high THC isn’t the only answer. It’s been described as THC being like fuel in your gas tank. It’s got lots of energy but what you get from all that gas depends on how it’s used. Minor canabanoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and other factors act as controls to how the THC is used in our body. I’ve enjoyed plenty of epic 16-18% weed that would put that 32% dispensary weed to shame. When the terpenes drive the high in the right direction, then you have that truly memorable experience that only top shelf cannabis can produce. To me, terpenes are just as important to canabanoids, maybe even more

I was hinting at more of an interaction between THC and other active compounds, which seems born out by the responses, albeit lacking specificity. My unscientific polling of seed distributors shows that high THC strains usually have very low cannabinoids, allowing most of the fingers in the "chord" to be THC ones instead of CBDs.

I'm guessing such studies or research has not been done, not surprisingly of course.
