Question on long-curing:
If I was to take some bud at 62% RH, place it in a small kilner jar and just before sealing the jar spray in an inert gas like nitrogen or argon to push out all the oxygen, would it in theory hold at the RH it was when you put it in the jar (if stored at the right temp - around 12-13 degrees C)?
“Sedikit sedikit, makin bukit.”
@gggrowboy In theory you could use a larger kilner jar add 62% Boveda and some kitchen roll between the Boveda and bud, use some tape to seal the jar round the neck a few times put it in a zip bag
and bury it in the garden, 1ft down, should last years (cold and dark), nobody will ever find.
Thanks @jacks_farm, good to know 👍🏼
Planning on experimenting with long curing a portion from each seasons grow. Maybe cure for a year and enjoy over the next couple.
Anyone already tried this?

I’ve experimented with long cure at room temperature. My experiment was using 15 grams in small glass jars, several strains. Storing at between 50 & 60% rh the trichomes continue to ripen and by the time it reached 11 months it’s almost all amber trichomes and very couch lock weed. Not at all bad if you are looking for nighttime meds or just love couch lock but the weed is very different from it’s original self imo. Still have a few nugs going but I’m not expecting anything special from them. On the bright side the weed is very easy to smoke aged this long as it’s turned a lovely amber color and not the original greenish color.

@ali-bongo I use mason jars with boveda packs in a ziploc bag with holes in it. It works but definitely looking for an upgrade. My only concern is the cost of shipping them to Canada? How much is the cost of shipping to Canada if you even do ship them that far lol
Yo Colacody,
It would depend on which size you choose, an 8 litre would cost around £19 to ship to Canada. But if you are interested let me know what size and I can get you a more accurate price
Cheers!

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here and say that a 12 pack of 1L mason jars costs is a far better investment than C-Vaults/Bovedas.. the only plus of using Cvaults are that they are opaque (no light gets in), and they are steel (hard to damage). Besides that, there is zero difference, in my experience. I have a big one, medium one, and a small one so, I have actually used them.. LoL.
Here in Canada, Boveda has a poor reputation.. lots of people (that I trust) claim it robs terpenes over long periods and impart a funky smell/taste to the cannabis. I can neither confirm or deny this as my ganja doesn't usually last long enough to tell. That's all anecdotal, mind you, but often said. Nor do I regularly use humidpaks, unless I have a very good reason (in that rare case, I usually go for the Integra brand, or a 're-hydration stone' if very dry) 🙂
Studies show a 15% higher score on maintaining trichomes (with terpenes and cannabinoids) when the medicinal herbs are stored with Boveda.
But yeah, I would very much like to see those studies that Boveda has that claim otherwise.
Just my two cents. 😶
Yo Temple, nice to hear an honest opinion on them, we're always down to hear the pro's and con's of products we stock, especially if you have them and have used them yourself!
It makes me wonder what owes to the funky smell and taste. We did have a customer once who found this with Bovedas, he was using them to store cigars lol. We then sourced him a load of 58% bags and he said it gave much better results, could it be the RH?
Also, the stones are a great idea, we stock those too and of course RAW have their own branded one lol!
We even had a customer that was using BREAD to keep humidity. Haha.
Appreciate your two cents

I’m thinking of going for the large personal but do not expect to fill in my first run. Would it be an issue to only part fill?
Shouldn't be an issue, perhaps another member could give you a more knowledgeable answer but I think the only downside is there's more room for air so it may cure slower than if completely full.

You should not fill a container any more than 2/3rds full when curing Gotta leave space for air to move around and all that

Hey @monkeydo,
This is my concern; ageing only really seems to make sense if something is gained in the process. I used to work for a whisky/cigar shop and it’s pretty straight forward with tobacco: a good quality cigar aged in the right conditions will mature into something quite special.
I’ve heard of a couple of companies that have been experimenting with long-curing. So far they have been having good results with buds canned in nitrogen, stored at 12-13 degrees C (55F) and aged for 6 months, 1 year and even 2 years. The condition is supposedly still very good and the smoke very smooth and flavourful.
Trichomes naturally oxidise and degrade over time due to UVB and oxygen, but if all the oxygen is removed from its container before sealing and it’s kept in complete darkness then my thinking is that this should preserve both potency and moisture while improving the flavour and smoke.
Only way to know I guess is to try it and report back in a year or so... And as you say, if it doesn’t mature as I hope I’ll still have some super smooth bedtime buds 😏
