Identifying bugs on a cannabis plant is something all grower hate to do. You work so hard trying to keep your plants safe from infestation, but somehow, bugs can always find a way into the grow room.

If you have found bugs in your grow room, don't panic, they can be treated, especially if you caught the problem early. The first thing you need to do is identify what bugs are on your weed plants. Then, you can come up with the correct treatment, that will be minimal harm to your plants.

Most Common Bugs on a Cannabis Plant

Some bugs are more common than others. Growing marijuana plants outdoors can be really tough to keep bugs away, but even growing indoors, you can have difficulty with bugs in the grow room. The bugs are all easily treatable, as long as you are consistent with the treatment. Here is a look at the most common bugs that may be found on your weed plants. If you think one of these are in your grow room, the click on the link to go to our article on treating it.

What do Spider Mites Look Like

Spider mites are very small, and difficult to see with the naked eye. Usually the symptoms of spider mites are seen before you will see the actual bug. This is because the are not only tiny, but they hide on the underside of your plants leaves, so they are very difficult to spot.

Usually, they will be a slight amber or yellow in colour, but they can also be green in the early days of their life cycle. Because spider mites on a weed plant are so hard to spot, you may be better off looking for the symptoms of them, as well as looking for the bugs themselves under the leaves.

  • Webbing on the plants in bad cases
  • Yellowing of the whole plant
  • Weak droopy leaves and stems

Of course take a good luck on the underside of the leaves of your plant. Use a microscope if you have to, this will help. If you do find spider mites, then you will need to treat them quickly. They will reproduce at an incredible rate. Your grow room can be infested within a few days after diagnosis if it isn't treated.

How To Kill Spider Mites

Black Flies in The Grow Room

Identifying bugs on a cannabis plant can be easy, as not all bugs are tiny. Sometimes, you may come across flies in the grow room. They can range in colour, but most likely will be green, or black. Black flies in particular, are most likely fungus gnats. These pests will lay eggs in your wet medium. When hatched, they will live in your soil for a while before developing wings and flying off to lay more eggs.

Fungus gnats are not a massive problem straight away, and can be treated without pesticides. You should always have sticky traps in your grow room, just incase. They will easily catch any flying bug and stop it from laying eggs on your marijuana plants.

Symptoms of Fungus Gnats

  • Plants roots will be eaten, causing a weak structure, and slow growth
  • Yellowing of the whole plant
  • Black flies around the medium, or caught in sticky traps

It is important to have sticky traps in your grow room to prevent flying bugs from settling in. Also, cover any vents, or intake ducting, with with gauze. This will also prevent bugs getting into the grow room.

Prevention is better than cure, but if you have found black flies on a weed plant in your grow room, then check out this guide on killing fungus gnats:

Aphids on a Cannabis Plant

When aphids (green fly) get into the grow room, they can become a problem. When it comes to identifying bugs on a cannabis plant, aphids are one of the easiest to spot. You will notice aphids flying around the lower section of your weed plants. They will hide under the leaves, and some of them will be able to fly too. Aphids by themselves are enough of a problem, but they also excrete a sticky substance that can encourage mould to grow on your plants.

It's not only insects in the grow room that can be a problem, but the things they leave behind can be nasty to smoke. If you have any bug issues during flower, then it is recommended you wash your buds after harvest to remove all the debris.

Symptoms of Aphids

  • Visibly seeing aphids on your plants
  • Yellowing of leaves on young plants
  • Green bugs on the underside of the leaves
  • Sticky sap on leaves
  • Signs of black sooty mould on leaves

There are many different ways you can treat aphids that have attacked your cannabis plants. One of the cleanest and best, is to use "Lady Bugs" as a predatory insects.

Some bugs will only eat live prey, and using them in the grow room to fight bug problems can work very well. They will not eat your plants, but they will still, erm, "relieve themselves", on your buds. Bud washing is highly recommended in any case of bugs during flower.

What are Thrips

Thrips are a small insect that you will find living on your cannabis plants leaves. Sometimes they will come out on top of the leaves, but most of the time they hide out underneath. With them being small, and the fact that they like to hide, thrips can be relatively difficult to see. In their early stages of life they will be yellow in colour, but as they grow to adults, some may turn black.

Unlike spider mites, thrips have a long body, and in their later stages, can develop wings, and fly short distances. This means they can easily move from plant to plant and infest a whole grow room quickly. If you find thrips on your cannabis plants, act quickly because they will spread fast.

Symptoms of Thrips of Weed Plants

  • Small white dots on leaves
  • Dry patches that look like spit
  • Small thin insect running between leaf margins
  • Weakened plant and droopy leaves

Don't underestimate thrips. Many growers don't know about them until they hit. They are not easy to get rid of, and take regular, extensive treatment to remove. Especially on bigger plants.

Each leaf needs to be covered with pesticides, on both sides. This is to ensure you get them all. It can be hard work, but worth it. She looks fine mate, nothing major to worry about. Bugs will come and go, its ok as long as they dont stay, and it doesnt look like there is much damage to your plant. Just carry on with what youre doing and she should be fine

No, the plant needs those leaves to provide energy to make buds. Your harvest will be better if you leave them.
