This is a public service announcement/reminder for an easy, inexpensive, and effective Integrated Pest Management (IPM) step: Have you put up your yellow sticky traps yet?

You know, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  I would much rather spend a tiny amount of money and time (literally cents and a few minutes) to set up yellow sticky traps than the headaches, time, and trouble needed to deal with an infestation.  No, they sticky traps do not guarantee you won’t have a problem, but they sure do reduce the risk.

How do they work?
Many pests are attracted to the yellowing color of leaves on a stressed plant because those plants are less able to stave off an attack.  Yellow sticky traps attract pests to the trap instead of your leaves, even if you have a fully healthy plant.

Tips & Suggestions

  • Buy a box of larger sized sticky trap sheets and cut them in half or quarter to use less. Cut them before you remove the protective waxed paper on the new trap.
  • Put a plastic fork in the soil and weave a trap through the tines for an easy soil holder.
  • Place a trap at the height of your canopy where some bugs might me searching for a meal.
  • Check your trap frequently for signs of pests.
  • Don’t worry about watering and your traps — most can get wet without problems.
  • Pull any long hair back before rooting around your grow space when there are sticky traps in use — they love luscious locks as much as they love gnats.
  • Be sure to not overwater your soil or coco medium as that will attract pests.
  • If you have an indoor storage bin for your soil or coco, or a worm bin, be sure to place traps in that area as well as in your grow space.

Sticky traps are a really simple, highly effective, and a very low-cost part of IPM.  What’s not to like?

@gelert I love glue sticks, as we call them in the US. Are you just blaming tools for poor workmanship?! 🤣

Buy a can of Tangle Trap and you can make your own yellow sticky cards. I use a putty knife to smear it on the paper.

@im_sparky

I had a spider mite infestation that took out my flower room two weeks before harvest. There were thousands of them. The house plants upstairs were loaded with spider mites too. My mother plant was in veg in the basement but had none. Why? Tangle trap  on the legs of my table/platform. Nothing can crawl by it. I don't think people cover this at all. Granted, if even one leaf touches a wall it won't work. But I have room to avoid it. Hmmm... better check tomorrow. It probably wouldn't work in a tent. But i did custom cut yellow poster board to fit my net pots.
