So I brought what I thought were spider mite eating nematodes.

Amblyseius californicus & Phytoseiulus persimilis.

are these actual nematodes or are these predatory mites.

would calling them Nematodes be factually incorrect

Difficult one to answer mate, @Templegrower may know what to say to this though, hopefully he can help

They say you really don't know how to do a thing until you know how to fix it when you do it wrong.

Sorry for the late response but yep, definitely predatory mites you have there. They eat spider mites as well as other nasty shit like thrips - I use a species called Amblyseius swirskii just for that.

Definitely are not nematodes though. Nematodes are microscopic worms that live in the soil. Some are good and are used in IPM, similar to your mites there. Steinernema feltiae is the species of nematodes most often used - great for fungus gnats! Others can be bad and can damage your plants, mostly through invasion of the rootzone. You typically don't see a lot of problems with nematodes in indoor grows though, unless you are introducing outdoor or shittily-sourced materials.

I digress though.

TL:DR, you have predatory mites that are very good to use, but they are not nematodes.
