I'm making some extracts tonight using super cold isopropyl alcohol from the freezer (Iso-alcohol freezes at -89 degrees Celsius) . The shake has been decarbed and stuck back into the freezer. The reason for making it super cold is to exclude unwanted compounds like waxes , lipids and chlorophyll . These will lower the quality of the finished product if not removed resulting in a darker oil. The target color is golden/amber.

I will be using 90grams of shake for the first run and I will do another run in a few days using the same process but using about 28 grams of bud instead of shake.

Follow for updates photos of extract will be shared once the extraction is finished

Let me know below what kind of yields (% wise) ye got from your extractions.

Hey @martinsworld I've been curious about this, so thanks for posting. I know nothing about this so I'll ask the simple newbie questions cuz I am. lol

Is your shake fresh frozen or dried?

Does it have to be decarb?  Wait I know this one - oh hell yes. 😀 2 points!!

If dried shake, do you crumble it up or doesn't matter?

What proof/% isopropyl are you using?

Thanks for your help man, I'll keep an eye on this. 👍

Its dried and then frozen after being decarbed

I crush it with a wooden spoon when mixed with the isopropyl alcohol. I prefer not to pregrind it because I feel a lot of the goodies will fall off in the blender.

What proof/% isopropyl are you using?

Mine if 99.8%

Sounds like a good time! In my experience, you should expect something like 10%-20% yield, based on weight. So maybe 10-20g of oil from the 90g? And on average, most crude oil aka RSO has a potency between 40-60% THC (or CBD if your material is CBD dominant). Approximate of course, but I do this for a living (actually had a conversation with the guys about this tonight at work!). My last personal run yielded something like 200-250g of oil from ~1kg of shitty trim and bud, and it seems quite potent. Keeps me sleeping thru the night at least, which is saying something. I will likely get it tested at some point but until then, in the pipe five by five. Ha.

Also fun fact: I don't decarb my material before extraction. How does that sound. 😎

@templegrower I have wondered about decarbing for RSO. I believe there are medicinal benefits  with out decarbing. and was wondering if this would be a good way to go for daily use with out getting too stoned. (may be a safer option for me due to my job) but ive always heard you need to decarb.  and yes i know i shouldnt use at work  but im in severe pain at work most every day

can you possibly explain any pros and cons or any info you have on this subject. here or on the podcast would be appreciated. Thanks

Sativa to change the things I can, Indica to accept the things I can’t.
