Questions What happens If 3 of your grandparents are female?

I Know sex in cannabis is genetically determined in a far more complex way than the simple X/Y model we are taught at school.

If the ratio does change due to the number of females in the lines, could we be unwittingly breeding for hermaphrodites?

Could we get real genetic sexual problems down the line if people keep feminising to feminised females without ever bringing males in?

Could we be breeding towards a monoecious plant?

Could we be undoing our ancestors selective breeding for dioeciousness?

Mother nature teaches us how little we know something every time we grow something.

Interesting question, Phil. I am not a geneticist so I could be wrong here, but I expect that as long as there are males in a population, then this will be a non-issue for the long-term health of the plant. I think the more likely issue to develop would be the loss of males in a particular strain which would require an out-cross down the line, and thereby lose genetic diversity in a worst-case situation.  I am thinking that with the way feminized seeds have caught on, it is really the direction cultivated cannabis is going for the foreseeable future, especially for indoor growers, just due to ease and desire for sinsemilla bud.

But at the same time, if you think of all the male plants that exists in the world (wild populations, for example, and the difficulty with which some strains reverse (it can be a real roll of the dice and its expensive on a commercial scale) I don’t think the male/female sexuality of the plant is in danger.  At least I hope not.

@im_sparky I hope you are right. Potentially it could be the end of sensimillia! The fact that cannabis naturally evolves 20 X fast than cannabis smokers means we may live to see the effect begin.

I'd love to see some hard data on this it's more of a PHD project though, a bit out of this middle aged hippies league.

I know feminised seed has had it's doubters and tin hatters, saying its unnatural, bonkers religious ideas forced onto plants is comical, I just think this may have been dismissed too early, it will be the best strains that get ruined first.
