Been experimenting with the simplest way to effectively clone plants in a very small scale, usual 1-3 cuts. Using clear plastic cups and jiffy pucks we get nearly 100% rooting success. Here’s my process

  1. take cuttings and immediately place them in water to preserve freshness
  2. After collecting the cuttings soak your jiffy starter pucks in pure water. The more pure the better. You don’t want nutrients at this stage, only pure water. I use rainwater, RO water, or distilled water
  3. one at a time, remove the cutting from the water and with a clean very sharp razor blade, cut the stem of the cutting at a 45 degree angle through a node. Natural hormones are higher at the nodes and they root easier this way. Also gently scrape some, not all, of the stem to expose a small bit of the inner layer. Most often I prefer to just make a few scratches on the stem with the blade. It works just as well as scraping and there’s less to mess up. You don’t need much
  4. dip the cutting about 3/4 inch into rooting gel, then place the cutting into the already moistened jiffy puck.
  5. put this cutting into a clear cup, then take another cup and cover it making a dome.
  6. place these cups in dim light, I’m using a 10 watt regular led bulb for this at about 8 inches over the cutting. If your light is too bright the cutting often tries to grow instead of rooting and eventually dies
  7. Keep the puck moist but not soaked and roots appear in 7-14 days depending on the cuttings
  8. When roots appear transplant to your media and that’s it!

You might notice that we put a plant marker in the dome with the plant so we always know which cut is which. We also have discovered that those plastic humidity domes fit the cups well and help make make the assembly more stable so we use them as a double top if they are available. Early on those ventilation holes on the domes aren’t ideal to keep the humidity at 100% so the second cup solves that. This cutting rooted in only 8 days 🥳 Because of this simple cloning process, we always seem to have more plants than we can grow 🤷🏻‍♂️. Hope this simple process helps someone

Very nice write up @monkeydo, You can use a plastic tote to root clones like this, Just drill a hole and fasten your light to the lid. You can get a similar size tote as your tent and set it right on top. If you don't like things on top of your tent find the right size for you and keep it anywhere you desire you just need the an outlet for the low intensity light. I was thinking a similar set up would work good for small seed runs as well, what are your thoughts?

I’m not certain I follow your thought on this. For seed runs I just make a couple of clones, then grow those in solo cups of coco till flower to keep them small. When they start blooming they get potted up for moisture management considerations. If I’m working with lots of cuts, I use the clear plastic deep watering saucers instead of cups. Because I don’t rely on clones, I didn’t want to spend lots of time or money getting this to work. These runoff trays are from Lowes and they also work great as a humidity dome.

I can get about 10-12 cuts in there and my light is mounted on a shelf so whatever I need to light just slide it under. In my small space something this size usually means I have far more clones than I need. There are 6 clones and 5 seedlings currently in my station destined for seed making and no space in any tents is available for any of them. You know how it is, too many strains and never enough space. Every few weeks the clones get chopped in half and set back in the clone station. Grow, cut, repeat! They seem to do fine this way.

It’s advised to dispense the gel into a separate container, then discard leftovers when you’re done cloning.
prevent contamination of your master supply of gel.

@monkeydo Everything you're doing but inside one of these or something similar and to whichever size fits your space requirements. You can drill a hole for the cord and fasten your light to the lid. punch a few ventilation holes in the tote. Basically use this as your "clone dome" I was thinking about trying something similar for small seed runs. This can also be discrete and moved around easily enough. If I go this route I'll be sure to out up a thread.
