Hey all!

I read to double buffer soak washed coco in a CalMag solution, mixed to an EC of 2, for 8hrs. Repeat.

My question is regarding the background EC of the water used for this solution, and the importance of pH of said solution. Understanding that post the soak the EC of the medium would likely be extremely high, and I would then anyways need to flush proper with low EC ph5.8 (or 6?) water.

What and why would best practice be ?

I understand correctly, using unbuffered coco, even if the runoff EC and pH are optimum I have no way of knowing how much of the Calcium and Magnesium have attached themselves to the coco. So intend to buffer all coco I procure as a precaution.

Second question being, if I wash my coco real well, and have only large fibres in play, do I still need to add perlite ? I find perlite quite dusty, hard to come by, dont think its recyclable ?

Thanks a ton folks!

Just buy the 50L bags of Canna Coco Pro+

They don't cost that much really.

This depends on what coco youre using, what brand are you using?

IMO coco is perfect on its own, and perlite is never needed in it. Just got straight up coco, the drainage is fine without perlite, and perlite is best to mix with soils to add more drainage Smile

Once we know what brand of coco you're using we can see about the buffering, it might not need it

Yer like £15 a bag, maximum, and that comes pre buffered and pretty much ready to go Smile

That's a bit shit for you but needs must and all that, I haven't had the need to use those bricks but from what I see and hear, it is Imperative to do the washing and prepping properly, don't cut corners 🙂

Ok, how much of that stuff do you have Meisme? In litres? Or kilos Smile

You will need to soak it for  while is some water that has a lot of nuits in it. The calcium will leach into the coco from there. Lety me knwo whow much you have and what food youre using and ill come up with a mix for you Smile

Thanks Macky and all!

Ill start from scratch. Some coco blocks state low EC. how much I need for a 26L bag, and what all else. We get, I presume good quality vermicompost, neem products, most organic  additives etc. Manures, bone meals etc.

Here are 2 x 650g blocks expand to 16ltrs they say. I know from past experience ill wash away half of it.

coco

But i already have half of some a bigger block like this which I will start prepping on your instructions.

coco2

Fair warning. Im mixing my own nutes, and happily will share details is desired.

@meisme I am using coco Bricks with Bio Pellets - if you can order from Royal Queen Seeds - Easy Boost Pellets - it does take good care for the vegging time - but needs CalMag if you veg 6 weeks or longer.

Plants are like children - always surprising you.
