Hi growers,
I have been having trouble growing in Coco since I moved to a new apartment. I tried normal fertilizing, under fertilizing, over fertilizing, cal/mag, flushes, all the usual stuff. I have EC and PH meters and used these to manage the fertilizer schedules.
I feel that the tap water itself is throwing things off.
Does this water analysis shed any light for anyone here?
I feel the calcium is high so may be causing problems.
Is there anything I can do?
Thanks!
@skank I’m not a coco grower, but if you’re using un-buffered coco, I would think the higher calcium is a good thing!
Also, are you letting your water off gas chlorine? And what is your EC out of the facet?

@sevans1965 Hi Sevans, thanks for your quick response. Yes, higher calcium can be desired, but I see signs of possible calcium burn often in my plants. Where I live in Switzerland the water is not treated with chlorine, only UV irradiation.
@skank, sorry to hear about your problems. Check your PH-EC meter for calibration and test your tap water to see what your back ground EC/PPM is. I would think with your location you wouldn't have a problem with tap water, but hey? So see what your back ground EC is and if it's high then try using half tap water and half rainwater or distilled, RO from a Pet store maybe. But you would have to change or alter the water source to see if it improves, then you would know if it's water related.
@woodi2 I calibrate at the start of every grow, background EC is 0.4. I will try some filtered water (I checked and the filter removes calcium). Will make feeding a time consuming process, but needs must!
I wasn't sure if the existing calcium in the water was already quite high and with nutes added would push the cal to "ooh that's too much" levels, so I guess filtering the cal out will be the slow method of finding out.
@skank, I don't understand those print outs. There's like three different ways to measure hardness of water and I don't know which one they're using. So the simplest thing would be to change the water source and do a comparison grow. You'll just need to plan ahead and keep water on hand, unopened. But if your background EC is .4 then I would cut it in half with store bought or other water. Rain water would be great if you could do that. Then your EC should be cut in half, about. Then mix your nutz accordingly. Are you mixing in the right order from the manufacture recommendation? Good luck man.
@woodi2 Here is a list of Hardness measurement units:
I have circled the one used and where my reading lies on the scale.
I mix my nutes as per instructions (Canna Coco A+B).
I will try to find photos of old grows (just started fresh grow and want it to go better than last 3 grows).
Thanks for all your input everyone, hopefully I can get this solved, it's a bit difficult to source alternative water aside from filtered, but I'll see what is available online (lost my driving license due to seizure and subsequent brain surgery, so can't drive to shop).
@skank yeah, I was thinking the same as woodi about the report. Oh, man -- that is some seriously hard water and most likely the source of your problems. Sorry to hear about your transportation struggles, but I am agreed with Woodi on this in that you have to get yourself some better water. With spring coming, maybe you could set up a rain barrel or some other catchment system? Also, given your situation, I would be switching to soil because your problem is almost certainly the water situation and you would need far less water with soil. I know we are all partial to the system we know and like, but if it were me, I would be switching even if just for logistics. With soil, you just need to keep is moist. Hope that helps!

@skank my ec is .4-.5 at times. Have you tried not using the calmag and just using some epsom to replace the mag?
the idea of buying water to grow dont suit me. but a filter id try.
