Title:

Username: RedEyeJedi, Strain: Watermelon Skittkes, Medium: House and Garden Bat Mix Special (I have no idea if this is any good so will post more details of it below), Lights: Led 300W

Medium:

Bat Special is House & Garden's premium quality soil mix. It contains German black peat and Baltic white peat, both of which carry the RHP stamp. Perlite, lime and bat guano is then added to the mix, this provides extra fertiliser to your plants.

Bat Special carries a pH of 6.4 and an EC of 1.2-1.5

Size of Grow Area and number of plants:

0.6 x 1.2 x 1.6

Lighting:

300W Lunar LED Full Spectrum

Extraction:

100mm Virgin Carbon Filter and 100mm extractor fan

Pot Sizes:

Starter Pots for seedlings and then transplant to 12l pots.

Nutrients:

GHE Triple pack Gro, Micro and Bloom

Other Equipment:

PH meter, PH up and down as plan to slightly fluctuate PH levels. 6” fan for airflow, May upgrade to a bigger fan as plants get bigger if needed.

Plan for the grow:

This is my 1st grow however I’m being ambitious and plan to top and do some basic LST but I’ll see how it goes lol. Also I read plants can take up nutrients at different ph levels so I have a ph meter and ph up and down and was planning to fluctuate ph between like 6.0 and 6.8.

I germinated my seeds Sunday 17/5 using water and paper towel method for 72 hours total and once I had tap roots, placed in my soil in starter pots, this was on Tuesday 19/5 so have now been in pots for 7 days, I’ll post some pics tomorrow as would be great to get some feedback. In the meantime just a couple of questions if I may..

I have 3 plants. Is my tent going to be big enough and light strong enough for my full cycle?

my seeds were given to me and although I’m sure they’re all feminised, 1 is an auto. Naturally I will eventually flip so will 12 hours light be enough for the auto and if not should I just ditch it? I have read that people have grown photos and autos together but any feedback would be appreciated. The watermelon is a photo btw so no worries there.

im sure I’ll have tons more questions along the way.

Also any feedback on my plan, nutes, soil im using, lights, fluctuating Ph etc all greatly welcomed.

Thanks in advance

Your plan for 3 plants in a 0.6 x 1.2 meter tent is tight but doable. Most experienced growers usually grow two in that amount of space. Running 3 will require you to keep the plants smaller but you should be fine. As far as the light, I cannot find any information on that light. You will be able to reach a harvest but I can’t say more than that. Personally I’d probably prefer more light but you have to start somewhere. The autoflower plant would prefer longer light hours but will finish just fine with the 12/12 light schedule. The yield might drop a bit but the quality should be good.

You did the important bit, you started. Each grow is an adventure and this one just took root. Smile and be proud, you’re a grower now. 👊

Nice start man! Excellent details.

I have a 0.6x1.2m myself and have run 3 plants in it with no issues at all. I actually think that's a perfect amount for that rectangular size, assuming your light is able to cover the whole footprint equally. I usually run autos though with not a lot of manipulation, so they stay relatively small, but still fill the tent nicely. You could definitely fill it with 2 as well with some bending and tying and whatnot, but it's ultimately up to the grower and how much they want to train the plants. Being that it's only 5 feet tall though, you don't have a lot of vertical space to work with so maximizing the horizontal space in there is key to maximizing yields. That's really true in any set up though... but I digress, lol.

I have a Mars Reflector 144 in mine, which is a rectangular shaped light so it covers the area quite nicely. Their TSL2000 is nice for that as well, as well as most quantum boards in that shape. From a quick google of your light there though, I'm not sure that will be enough to really fill up the entire space in the tent so, you'll wanna have your plants as directly underneath your light as you possibly can.

Here are a couple of pics of my 0.6x1.2.. I currently have 5 plants in mine at about 2-3 weeks flower and it is PACKED lol. 3 is definitely enough, especially with some light training. I wouldn't recommend more, unless you're doing a SoG or something with a bunch of little plants.

Empty 2x4 with light
Day 53ish 2x4 with autos
Day 53ish 2x4 with autos2

And Monkey's got it there with your light schedule Q - autos will grow under any light schedule but, the more light they get the better. They do just fine under 12/12 though. I am running this exact situation in my other tent, 3 autos and 3 photos inside on 12/12.

@templegrower Thanks mate, yeah your light definitely covers more space then mine. I think realistically I need to upgrade my light ASAP. What sort of price did you pay for yours?

@redeyejedi

I got mine second hand, but it retailed for $350 CAD when it first came out. Mars released a new series of quantum board-type lights - the TS series - last year? They have a rectangular light called the TSL2000 that is basically the upgrade of my light. They also have a SP250 bar light that supposedly covers a 2x4 footprint but, I am still a bit skeptical on that...@colacody has one, maybe he would know better.  But yeah, any good quantum board manufacturer (Invisible Sun, HLG, etc) usually carry boards in that rectangular shape for better coverage.

Or you could get multiple lights like @twisted1 does. That's what I've always done in my 4x4 tent as well. Lots of ways to increase that PPFD but like you say, the pandemic isn't making things move as smoothly as they normally do.

@templegrower OK so im pretty much convinced my light isn't much cop and although it will be tight im leaning towards upgrading before mine go into flower to maximise my crop. Apologies if this is in the wrong post but I was hoping for any advice before biting the bullet and lumping out on a new light.

So im kind of torn between your recommendation for the Mars TSL2000 and the Spider Farmer 2000. Difference in price is pretty negligible, Cheapest ive found the Mars is £229 and the Spider Farmer £259. Has anyone had any experience with both and if so which one would you recommend?

Also if this question is better placed in a different thread, let me know and I will re-post.

Thanks

@redeyejedi

Both good choices - very similar lights those two. Off the top of my head, I know @zn has a TSL2000, @twisted1 has a bunch of TS1000s, and a bunch of other guys have various TS models. A couple people run the Spider Farmer as well, I can't remember who now. Might be worth starting a thread here. I've never used either myself but have heard good things about both.

Thanks for the replies guys, I will try and post some more info on my light if I can find it (it came as part of a kit with tent, fan etc)

will also get some pics of my setup posted along with the plants themselves. 8 days in so far and have to say I’m loving it, wish I’d of started years ago

@redeyejediI looked up your light   they dont give all the specs like how many watts it pulls from the wall. but the normal foot print on a 300w Led light is 1.5ft x 1.5ft for flowering. at a minimum I would add another 300w or even 2 in your 2' x 4' tent before flower.  sorry about using ft for measurements im us and dont know metrics that well. I agree with Temple 3 plants will be fine in there as far as the Auto goes  it will be fine running on the light schedule with the photos and it ought to be finished before the photos allowing you some extra room when the photos are fattening up. Good Luck with your grow.

Ive attached a few photos of my setup. Thanks to everyone who has replied so far but from what Ive read I think I'm ok with the auto in with the photos, I'l keep with 3 plants and just look to maximise horizontal space, I guess my light is my only concern. I probably will have to run with this light for now, (times are hard with quarantine and what not)

Ive got the humidity and temp control monitors which are really good, I don't currently have any problems with heat so haven't got any rad in there as light provides more then enough heat and just use extractor and fan if it needs to cool down. Humidifier and De-humidifier control humidity so another less thing to worry about.

And finally here is one of my pride and joys, its currently 8 days since I potted the seed, after germinating in paper towel for 72 hours. How is she looking for 8 days in??

Thanks again everyone for all the help and encouragement so far.

@redeyejedi Yes mate, she looks very happy man! Maybe the stem looks a little weak, make sure she has a steady breeze blowing at her so she build s a good stem

@macky Thanks mate, I have a small fan in the tent however I can probably lower it to ensue the plants are getting more of a breeze (I was a bit worried about windburn initially) Also as the weather is so hot at he moment, I tend to take them out whilst they're small and leave them on my window sill during the day as they really seem to enjoy the direct sunlight and heat however I can move my fan in and direct that towards the plants whilst they're there to try and beef the stem up a bit.

One other question, I'm only using tap water at the moment, once I transplant (which I was aiming to do in about 6-7 days) I was going to start gently introducing nutrients. Ive got some Cal-Mag however I live in the UK and have very hard water where I live so with that in mind, would that already have enough Ca & Mg in it and as such, I wouldnt need the Cal-Mag?

I did look up and according to my local water board, they're saying Mg&Ca levels are about 126 CaMg/l. Im assuming that is the same as PPM?

@redeyejedi

Yeah, water is huge. Any idea what the mg/L (and you assume right: mg/L = PPM) of the sodium (Na) is in your water? Too much sodium can cause loads of issues with lockout and toxicity and is just not good. Those Ca and Mg levels shouldn't be an issue though - they're about the same as what I have here in my water. Definitely not enough for what the plant needs though, so you'll have to supplement. I use Epsom salts (MgSO4) and Dolomite Lime (CaMg(CO3)2) mixed in my supersoil as my sources, but usually have to supplement with more Mg at some point.

My tap water has a very high pH however - around 8.2 so I need to bring that down to around 6.7 that before I irrigate. If your pH is too high or low, you will get issues no matter how perfect your nute ratios are.

A decent pH/TDS pen will go a long way in helping you figure out what you might need to do for your specific situation.

@templegrower I have purchased a PH tester so I will have that hopefully within the next few days (am waiting on Amazon delivery for that) so from that point of view I'll be fine to check PH levels. I did refer to it in one of my earlier posts but I was looking to fluctuate my PH between 6.0 and 6.8 (as I am in soil) as Ive read this will help the plants absorb the different nutrients better? With this in mind I do have some PH up and down.

Im not sure what the sodium levels are in my water, I did go back on my local water website but it doesn't show this information but I've read alot about how too much salt can cause nutrient lockout so im very mindful of that. I think maybe to start with I will just go with nutes and fresh water and then slowly introduce some Cal Mag.

I think a PPM tester maybe something to add to my list in future.

@redeyejedi

Yeah, perfect. Sounds like you're on the right track mang. Spot on with the pH/nute absorption. That range is perfect for soil. And for sodium, most municipal water supplies are decently clean.. it all depends on where you live though. If you have a well or get your water from a non-treated source, that's where you can run into more issues.

But yeah, a simple TDS pen is useful for that.

Day 10, I’ve had her closer to the fan to try and strengthen the stem. How is she looking?

is it me being paranoid or does she look like she is stretching a bit?

Day 13 Update

Afternoon all and happy June to everyone.

I just thought id post an update with to how the girls are doing since my last my last post.

431DF3DF 148E 49B0 AC28 488DC36EDD3F

So above are all 3 of them, the taller one on the right is about 3 days behind the other 2 (in noob fashion, I only germinated 3 seeds originally and 1 never popped so had to do another and as a result, this one is a bit behind). As the Critical on the right seemed to be stretching a bit, ive dropped my light slightly

The watermelon on the left seems to be the liveliest so far. Below is a bit more of a close up photo of her, just for you Cannabus 😛

Im just watering all with normal tap water at the moment as and when the medium is dry (my PH meter, still hasn't arrived so no idea what the PH level is) but they seem to be really liking it so far.

DFB78E6E B711 40B7 9BD6 8F9ECB4206F7

At this stage I had planned to transplant 2 of them tomorrow (the younger one I'll give a few more days to catch up) but after watching a couple of videos I think by @Macky and @TempleGrower (Great videos by the way guys) on transplanting, I feel mine might not quite be ready yet?!

So I guess at this stage its really just 2 questions for the forum, are they all looking ok? And transplanting wise, what does everyone think, give another 5 - 7 days 1st?

The 2 on the left are 13 days old from when seed was potted (probably 11 days old from when seed 1st sprouted) and as above the smaller one is about 3 days behind.

Final thing to add is one ordered an EC meter. I thought it would be really useful for me to know the EC of my water and also when I start adding nutrients, so if I do make any mistakes, at least I can give you guys that info which im sure will be useful.

Think thats it for today, any other feedback welcome so please let me your know your thoughts

Cheers guys

Day 16 Update

Morning All, so Christmas came early today for me with my new light arriving and also finally my PH and EC pen. Light is ow up and hanging and wow is it bright, it felt like that scene in National Lampoons Xmas vacation when he finally gets all his Xmas lights on lol anyway im digressing. See pic below for new light setup

0EE28F81 9975 457F 9A42 387287DACC29

So with my PH and EC meters arriving im finally able to test my tap water, PH of 7.2 and PPM of 310. I'll probably post something separate regarding PPM of my water for a bit of advice as im still not adding nutrients and I don't want to burn them out when I finally do. Although I knew my tap water was never going to be 0 ppm, I was maybe expecting like 150 but that could of been unrealistic on my part, being new to this and everything lol.

In the meantime though, I will start using some PH down to bring my water PH between 6.0 and 6.8.

So heres a couple of photos of the plants.

D91BA68E 8030 4AEA B3EF 9DD6336E3AC6
30FB5288 1653 4401 8B4D CE3820D05FEB
362C5C61 F819 4386 9253 B39530DAECDA

At this stage they're still just being given tap water as and when its needed. With the middle and the right hand plant, I was probably going to look to transplant these at the weekend and then the younger on on the left, a couple of days after. If anyone thinks this is to early, or I should be doing now, please let me know. I have everything here ready for transplanting.

Think thats it at this stage, I do have a question regarding my air exchange but I'll put a thread up in the Q&A about that.

As always any comments or suggestions please let me know. I spend so much time reading up on different stages of the grow etc but im still so nervous about fucking them up lol.

Thanks Guys.

@redeyejedi I usually re-pot mine after 2 weeks in a small 6" pot to a 10" pot  and another 2 weeks  they go into a 5 gallon Bucket. Just be gentle with them.

Ok, thanks for the quick replies, I'll get pots ready for 2 of them and then transplant the other one in 2 days time. Unfortunately ive only got 3 Gallon pots to go straight into, nothing in-between so will be going into them (I'll just be gentle with the watering). Ive actually been really looking forward to doing this bit but now its here, I feel nervous all of a sudden lol so wish me luck. I'll put some pics up (of the hopefully successful operation) after.

Just 1 question then, once ive transplanted I'll naturally water them. As its new soil, would you advise just fresh PH'd tap water at this stage and then start slowly adding nutrients from the next feed?

Transplant Update

So day 16 officially became transplant day and pleased to say that the operation was a success..... I think. Followed @TempleGrower video on you tube but just used some rooting powder I had instead of the worm casting you used.

A9B26D4F C17F 424A B518 0A585483A872
8ED35653 2142 438E AE83 92430097783E

Using my shiny new PH meter I adjusted water down from 7.9 to 6.3 PH (280 ppm) and gave 800ml to each, hopefully that wasnt too much for 1st watering, it seemed right for a 12l pot and I tried make sure most of the water was in the new soil to encourage the roots to spread.

Anything ive missed, done wrong, let me know otherwise I'll keep an eye on them over the next few days and update in due course. Thumbs Up

LOL, thanks mate. My 1st ever proper bit of gardening ive done ever, was so expecting an accident but it seemed to go pretty smoothly. Is it pretty sad that I really enjoyed standing in my kitchen with a bucket of water and a pipette trying to get my PH level right? LMAO
