Royal Gorilla Automatic grow

Clist grows Royal Gorilla Automatic from Royal Queen Seeds in coco/perlite mix under LED lighting

Link to strain: Royal Gorilla Automatic

RoyalGorillaAutomatic RQS image

Medium:

Recycled coco with approximately 30% perlite.

Coco has been rinsed from dust and re-buffered with 150% strength cal-mag solution for 24h

Size of Grow Area and number of plants:

1.2 x 0,6 x 1.8 M grow tent with one plant.

Lighting:

Two ToDoGrow COB LEDs 105w each. One is 3500k, and the other 3000k

Extraction:

Passive intake, exhaust will be a Prima Klima Super Silent with a Prima Klima carbon filter.

Pot Sizes:

Final container 3 gallon air pot. Transplanting will be from jiffy pellet to nursery bag, to either a 1 gal fabric pot, or a 1 gal air pot. I want to try using airpots when transplanting.

Nutrients:

Terra Aquatica (GHE) Flora Series, T.A. Fulvic (GHE Diamond Nectar),T.A. Silicate (GHE Mineral Magic), T.A. Final Part (GHE Ripen), T.A. Flash Clean (GHE FloraKleen)

Other Equipment:

Dehumidifier, humidifier, Oscillating SJ Monkey Fan, small fans as needed, Homemade automatic watering system with Bloom Brothers Watering Halos. An a wireless humidity and temperature sensor.

Plan for the grow:

I will plant the seed in a wet jiffy pellet, put the pellet in a humidity dome with a heating mat under it,adjust temperature to

keep around 28 C and try to keep a humidity around 90%. An 18W grow light will lights the humidity dome.

After the seed popped, opened it’s cotyledons and roots start to poke out of the jiffy , I will put the jiffy in a nursery bag with coco/perlite.

The Coco Perlite mix will have been flushed with water until runoff has an EC of 0.400 mS.

I will start fertigating with nutrients at EC 0.400mS and gradually increase the strength until around EC 1.000mS.

I will eventually fertigate 2 or 3 times a day. When the seedling has three true nodes I plan to transplant it into a 1 or 2 gal pot.

After the plant has 6 or 7 nodes I will transplant into final container of 3 gal. I plan to at least top the plant, but if possible do a manifold.

If so, I will probably use my scrog nets. I will do a Flora Kleen flush before switching to flowering nutrient blend.

And also a Flora Kleen flush before switching to Ripen at the end of the grow.

And when the buds are fat and ripe I will chop, trim, dry and cure.

20201013 SeedPack

Day 1

I scuffed the seed in a rolled up piece of 400 grit sandpaper. I shocked the tube gently up and down five times.

I then rolled the seed in some mycorrhiza and put the seed into a pre-soaked jiffy pellet.

The pellet was then put into a humidity dome with a heating mat under it. Checked temperature after a while and found it getting too hot.

I connected the heating mat to a timer and set the timer to turn on for 15 minutes and then off for 15 minutes, and repeat.

Got temperature down to a pretty constant 28 degrees. I was happy with that.

I occasionally spray inside the dome with water to keep relative humidity(RH) at around 90%.

I lit the dome with a 18w grow light, running the light 24/0.

20201012 plantedSeed

Day 2-3

No change. Sprayed the dome.

Day 4

Still nothing popping out. Sprayed some more water and added some moist to the jiffy pellet.

Started to think I had a dud. I gently removed the top layer from the pellet and could then see the top part of a stem bent like an upside town letter “U” poking out.

Day 5

Early in the morning I found a little seedling poking out of the jiffy pellet.

20201016 Day5 seedling

I gathered a small amount of the coco-perlite mix for the nursery bag and rinsed it first with some plain water.

I then prepared a few liters of nutrient solution, and used some of it, diluted down to an EC just under 0.40 mS to rinse thru the coco for the nursery bag.

I checked the runoff and it had en EC around 0.38 mS. I then transplanted the jiffy pellet into the nursery bag.

Fertigated at EC 0.40mS, PH 6.3.

20201016 Day5 NurseryBag

Day 6

Fertigated once at EC 0.40mS, PH 6.4.

20201017 Day6 190558

Day 7:

Starting to ramp up EC in the feed. Fertigated morning EC 0.46mS, PH 6.3, and in the evening at EC 0.51mS PH6.2.

20201018 Day7 162422

Day 8:

Fertigated morning at EC 0.56 mS, PH 6.3

Fertigated evening at EC 0.66. PH 6.3

Adjusted temp down to about 25-26.

Day 9:

Fertigated morning at EC 0.66mS, PH 6.3.

Fertigated evening at EC 0.66mS, PH 6.3

20201020 Day9 seedling

Starting to worry about this seedling.

It seems to grow very slowly, and it's vierd looking. I think I might have to pop another seed.

20201020 Day9 closeup

I'll give it a day or two more, if nothing happens I think I will start over.

Day 12

I actually gave up on day 9, however kept the little freak around a couple of days more. Picture taken after I had sprayed some water.

20201023 Day12 LastPictureTaken

I tossed this one.

Day 1 (Second try)

This time I checked the PH on the water I used to pre soak the pellet. I did not try to scuff the seed this time. I rolled the seed in some mycorrhiza before putting it in the jiffy pellet.

Day 2

No change.

Day 3

This morning the seed popped up, and in the evening it was well on the way to open up its cotyledons. I did help her off with the helmet.

20201023 Day3 popping

Day 4

The plant is growing, looks good. I prepared some nutrient solution and a nursery bag filled with the coco-mix and actually dipped the bag into solution that was diluted to EC 0.41. In the evening I transplanted the seedling-pellet into the nursery bag and fertigated a little on the pellet as well.

20201024 Day4 morning
20201024 Day4 evening

Looks good Smile

Day 5

20201025 Day5

Fertigated once EC 0.41 PH 6.3.

Trying to keep temp around 25°C and RH 60-70%.

Day 6

Mixed nutes according to the "1st true leaves" blend (GHE blend chart)

Fertigated once EC 0.50 PH 6.3 (starting to ramp up EC)

Day 7

20201027 Day7

Plant has two nodes.

Fertigated once EC 0.61 PH 6.0.

Day 8

Fertigated twice.

Morning: EC 0.71 PH 6.2.

Evening: EC 0.79 PH 6.1

Day 9

20201029 Day9 pic1

Fertigated twice.

Morning: EC 0.87 PH 6.0

Evening: EC 0.92 PH 6.0

20201029 Day9 twist

There is a twist in one of the leaves. I have read that this might be an early indication of calcium deficiency, so I begin foliar application of water-calMag solution.

Day 10

20201030 Day10

Continue spraying the leaves with calMag-water.

Fertigated twice.

Morning EC 1.01 PH 6.1

Evening EC 0.98 PH 6.2

Everything looks good Smile

Quite a difference compared to my first seedling Razz

Day 11

20201031 Day11 morning sm

Fertigated twice.

As I have reached my EC target of around 1.00, I will keep fertigating at that EC while gradualy lowering PH to around 5.8 going forward.

Leaves are still looking a bit twisted and wavy, so I continue spraying cal-mag-water solution.

The plant has three nodes and roots are growing out of the bottom of the nursery bag.

This evening I transplanted the little lady into a 1 gal air pot. Before the transplant I had watered thru the coco with nurtient solution.

20201031 Day11 Evening

Now I light the plant 20/4 with a 55w grow light at around 50-60cm distance. Hopefully it isn't to strong to early.

Help wanted Smile Could use some input on this one. What are those bright squiggly stripes/lines on the leaves? Can't see any pest, but I am going to check some more. Could it be light-burn from when I have sprayed water with lights on?

Funny thing.. I wrote this post yesterday, but somehow I failed to actually post it, so I had to redo it today.. oops Bongin

Day 14

Starting to get that nice smell from touching the leaves Smile

The plant has four nodes now.

Day 15

20201104 Day15 174918

I noticed some spots on the leaves that I think look like calcium and or magnesium deficiency. I changed out the evening feed with half a liter water dosed with CalMag. I also continue applying calMag-water via foliar spray.

20201104 Day15 def

Day 16

Feeding morning av evening as usual + calMag foliar spray. I keep seeing fungus gnats so I added a little more nematodes to the media.

Day 17

20201106 Day17 173825

Fifth node is on it's way.

day 18

20201107 Day18 Leaf def

There are spots on the lower leaves. But not on the newer growth.

Day 19

Mixed a new batch following GHE tri-flora "Growing" formula. Adjusted to EC 1.01 and PH 5.8.

Day 20

20201109 Day20 173956

Moved into the big tent today! Well that is, into the main tent. It's 120x60x178 cm. Lighting now with one 100w light at aproximately 60cm height.

Sixth node is on the way.

Transplanting is coming soon, and due to my initial cal-mag issues I decided to buffer the media for the larger container one extra time. I soaked it in 150% strong cal-mag water solution for about 10h.

Day 22

20201111 Day22 trnspl

Transplanted to a 3 gal pot this morning. I prepared the media in my final pot by watering thru it with nutrient solution, checked runoff EC:0.69.. good enough. As there were some fungus gnats hanging around looking evil, I watered in a little more nematodes.

This was my first time potting up using air-pot as second container. I went very smooth. I have used fabric pot as second container earlier and as the roots grows into the fabric I tended to rip a lot of roots while transplanting. That problem seems to be not present when using air-pots. Grin

Decision time approaches. Tomorrow or the next day I will top the plant. The question is, do I have the time to attempt doing a manifold?(not mainline)

I think I will try! Shock

Day 23

Decided to go for it. Topped today to the third node. Removed growth tops on the lower branches but kept all fan leaves, except for the first node. I removed that one completely.

20201112 Day23 FirstTopping

Day 24

The plant looks happy. The third node has itself 2 nodes and a third on it's way.

20201113 Day24 HappyPlant

Day 25

Switched on my second light, so now both 100w lights are on.

Made a new nutrient batch and hooked up my automatic watering system. However for now I will still mostly hand-water until I am thru with the manifold-training.

Day 26

20201115 Day26 persp
20201115 Day26 side

Day28

The third node has itself now four nodes. I topped the third nodes brances to their third node, and removed the growth tips on their second node. Now I have growth tips on first and third node.

20201117 Day28 plant
20201117 Day28 SecondTopping

I also super cropped the main two branches, and tied down with some soft-tie.

Day33

Keeping temps at around 24-25 °C, RH around 60%, still using humidifier to keep RH up.

Keeping PH around 5.8, checking Runoff EC, it's around 0.68 mS.

Today I switch from fertigating twice a day, to automatic fertigation four times a day.

Added a little dose of neematodes to stave of fungus gnats. Perhaps I overdo this type of application, not sure. I use H2O2 in my nutrient mix and I suspect neematodes might not like that. I don't know Hmm .

Day 36

Mixed a new batch of nutrient going with the Pre-Flower recipe.

Day 37

Scrogging the plant. Just listened to the "Scrog"-episode and trying to apply

some of the tips I learned from that Smile

20201126 Day37 Scrog

Day 38

20201127 Day38 recovery
20201127 Day38 closeup

After tie down they perk up again.

RH is getting a bit high, around 70%, so I remove the humidifier.

Day 39

Still high RH, so I increase extraction fan speed. Had to dial that in further next couple of days.

20201128 Day39 knuckles

Day 40

The bottom two fan leaves looks unhealthy, and I removed them. Not sure what is the problem Hmm . The rest of the plant looks pretty healthy.

20201129 Day40 FanLeaves issue

Day 42

20201201 Day42 SpreadingOut
20201201 Day42 CloseUp
20201201 Day42 knuckles

Keep spreading out the plant. Flowers are starting to form.

Question: I need to mix a new batch of nutrients in a few days. Is it time to switch to flowering nutrient blend or should I go another week and a half with pre-flowering nutrient-mix? Any suggestions are welcome Smile

Day 43 - 48

I decided to mix according to the "flowering" recipe, and things are progressing nicely.

After spreading out the plant using the first scrog net I added another net to give extra support. I could have done a better job with the first net, and also I feel that a hard metal grid as suggested in the Scrog-episode of High on Homegrown would be beneficial.

I have been trimming of some leaves to improve airflow. I also removed some lower growth. I try to not remove to much at once, but rather space it out over time. Don't want to chock the plant to much.

After my last grow I fear the herm. Neutral

20201206 Day47 close
20201206 Day47 canopy

Photos from day 47

I have been seeing a lot more Fungus gnats lately, so I added another dose of nematodes.

Until next time...

Cheers!

Day 49 - 53

20201209 Day50 202333

Plant is coming along nicely. Some tops are overtaking the others in height. I will just let them be at this point.

Each day I have done some strategic defoliation to improve air circulation. I have removed more of the lower growth-tops.

It's getting harder to reach the back of the plant.

20201211 Day52 171049

I'm catching quite a few fungus gnats, but still under control I think.

This plant feels like the easiest of all plants I have grown. Perhaps I learned something from my earlier grows Silly .

/cheers Clist

So far looks real good. Might need to control the fast growers but that’s not too difficult. Practice makes perfect, or at least improvement so it does get easier like you mentioned and that’s good for new growers to hear too👍

I actually love the fact that most of you are from different places around the world...and the humor, the topics, the guests and so on..the guests are actually a chapter in it self. I am VERY impressed and happy with the guests you are able to bring on the show :d   Anyways keep up the great work =)
