So not a full diary but just showing what’s growing on in my loft atm..

i have been experimenting with and researching soil mixing for a little while now..

last august I burnt my plants with my first super living soil mix and lost 8 outta 9.. I know I know but it was a stoned and lazy decision to pot em all up at the same time ..

I was pissed but determined to crack this style of growing as it has many appeals long term especially ..

So now I have found some successes with some fine tuning..

here we have the following:

1x pre-sunk no1 old timer1 genetics (as mentioned in my seed sexing thread). Growing in my home mix peat based soil. Grown in 2L pot for 3 weeks from seed then 12/12 for 3 weeks to show sex now under 20/4 to re-veg.

77AB4B7B E22A 4C16 9F4E 43118E9A1F90

1x Lebanese land race from Real Seed Company growing in my home mix peat based soil. Same age as the above but hasn’t been flipped so still don’t know sex.

2B4DBC5D 6769 4C6F BEBF F11D58FB1892

1x Buttercream Gelato from Sensi Research seeds growing in Sohum soil (it is ahead of others and in 3rd-4th  week of flower) This was a cutting from when I grew her end of last year. She’s about a month ahead of the others.

A35D7A5A CF96 45E9 A48D 29E1D41BC970

1x Kali Mist (serious seeds cannabis cup winner 1995 and 2000) also growing in sohum (2nd week after flip to 12/12). She was flipped early (after 4wks from seed) as she’s sativa and a long long flowering strain, 14-16 weeks.

E9B9464B DBE4 4D14 B755 B5CC3274E8B4

1x Cream n Cheese cbd from Seedsman growing in a worm cast / perlite/ compost / life cycle dry amendment mix

B281F4D7 6375 41DC 8869 74B46F3BC0E2

The buttercream Gelato had 6 weeks before flip and was from a cutting I took a while ago. The goal was to test out Sohum soil as a start to finish water only soil, some biosis also so far once in veg and again at start of flower.

The others all from seed sown a couple weeks later. They are testing out 2 home soil mixes which use all the same ingredients (most from indoor organics) except one uses coco the other peat.
These are up against a mix of 1/3 perlite 1/3 worm cast 1/3 compost plus 150g life cycle amendment

and up against the sohum.

not a true test as all diff strains but will show how long the pre-loaded food will last each plant.

the pots used are 20L felt style

the plants were all started in 2Lb plastic pots.

this is an a organic water only grow with the exceptions of biosis (a microbe labee tea), maybe some molasses and/or frass to feee microbial life, a top dress will be applied before the others fip to flower in about a week.

I will add the home soil mixes in due course when / if I’m happy with them.

The main goals of this is to explore soils and strains and see what I can learn to take forward.

All Q’s and comments welcomed

happy growing ya’ll

@chillbert Haha.. yeah man. Those 15 weekers must be rough, bro. But she'll be worth it. Maybe when I finally learn how to grow and get a little patience I'll check out a few old time faves... I hear the Dr. Grinspoon from Barneys is also like 15=19 weeks but crazy groovy. Someday I want to check that one out. Have fun bro. Cant wait to see the progress Smile

Have moved to flowering positions under 2 x 240w migro leds (1 with 10% far red)

scroggs put in position and light flipped to 12/12

Would have liked to veg a week longer on the Old Timer1, Lebanese and Cream n Cheese but logistics dictate otherwise ..

so into flower we go..

@3plantspete haha yeah I seen Leighton’s ‘horizontal’ system

he’s a passionate dude who knows a lotta stuff and likes to talk about it too lol

just this morning I bought a 50L tub to biuld a little one for my conservatory cucumbers

check out what @SpartanGrown does .. similar with a pipe fitted vertically so you fill reservoir in the bottom.. keeps soil top drier which helps with gnats etc

as I loft grow I’m weary of using very large pots (weight is important) but in my garden and allotment I use a more authentic living soil approach.

thanks for the tip and good luck making your own soils up 👍

Old Timer 1 skunk hermied so is now compost !

6941F08D CEB2 45AC A88A 2815393E759C

i had sexed her previously by going 12/12 then flipped back to 18/6 to reveg... this obviously didn’t go down too well with her, or him? Or both lol

what is amazing though is it has produced whole seed already ! On the lower bracts where the first pistols and calyxes appears by the stems.. in less than 3 weeks ! This must be due to the light hour changes back and forth I’m guessing??
the pic in my hand is a seed!

never mind but was really looking forward to some old mix genetics !

hopefully the Lebanese will be female.. I haven’t subjected it to the same treatment and atm is looking a beautiful sativa specimen!

more space for the rest now so there’s always a positive somewhere.. sometimes you just gotta look a bit harder to find one lol

onwards and upwards people 👍

Here is the Buttercream Gelato (Sensi Research Seeds) at end of week 6 in flower.
Grown in 20L of Sohum, water only, 1 x biosys at week 5

Looking a little short on food to go the last 3 weeks left so have mulched pot with 1” more sohum and we’ll see how she goes..

Question for the soil guys, When making up soil, as in pre loading with dry amendments.

Do you wet it? How much and how often?

Do you seal it or let it breathe? And how often do you turn it over?

Thanks

@rufio hey bro

Depending on what’s being mixed...

with added dry mix amendments I wet it down a little so it feels damp but not wet.... so it will stick together when squeezed in your hands but crumble up nicely still

I mix up then turn and air a couple of times over 10 days or so. Then again before use. I’m using a 80L dustbin for mixing and leave lid on to keep bugs out but there is air space too (not full to the brim)

which amendments are you thinking of bro?
The life cycle I’d advise leaving at least a week, probably 2 before adding plants

if Mixing your own dry amendments (kelp, neem, rock dust etc) I’d mix and leave longer .. 2-3 weeks or more should be ok.

also worth checking out is @Hart’s and @TempleGrower’s soil mixes here at Percys

i have made my own soil mix based on theirs and ckakmas coots mix .. it’s doing well but not done yet so can’t fully evaluate the mix yet.

A Very simple mix is 1/3 coco or peat , 1/3 compost and 1/3 perlite with added Life Cycle at the lower rates suggested then top dress once or twice during end veg and again if needed in early / mid flower

Also there’s a no-till mix at indoor organics which almost exactly the same as Life Cycle.

good luck and have fun bro

@chillbert thanks man, exactly what I was looking for. Just to mix through some life cycle into light mix and some extra perlite. Mixing up for next run.

@rufio nothing wrong with perlite I use it myself sometimes but I find it tends to find its way to the top when watered and a lot ends up on the top. Pumice or rice husks are a good alternative👍

So we have a Sohum soil side by side for interest..

522DDF6C C24F 420D 8A5C 01D815EABE30

on the left is Buttercream gelato after 55 days in flower and on the right Kali Mist after 35 days in flower.

The buttercream gelato was as dark as the KM at the start

Chop day for Sohum grown Buttercream Gelato !

She has been water only. Plus 3 doses of biosys from end of veg 2 weeks apart.

she is on day 58 since 12/12 and was grown from a cutting.

Trichs are nearly all cloudy, with some ambers and very few clear btw

07BA29FF 3F78 4B9A BC46 087A80529818

Looks like the food has pretty much all been eaten and she has entered senescence

Soil will be re-amended for re-use.

I will add a smoke / weight report when completed in a couple of weeks. 👌

peace

@toploader hi mate

so overall impressed to the tune of £40 especially if I were a newb !

given I only used a 20L pot that’s only £20 for what I’m guessing will be around 4oz so it did do what it said on the tin imo

no pH issues ... no nute burns ... no bottled feeds .. no deficiencies (until right at the end when she’s pretty much done)

she started  dark green and I wondered if too much N it’s preloaded but she did use it in the end.

I would recommend using the recommended volumes of 40L (or bigger if you have beds) - more to prevent an issue of nutrient running out which I was very close to.. I couldn’t have gone another week without feeding so a 10 weeker plus or hungry feeder would want more i imagine..

i also think it’s paying a lot for perlite (nearly 50%!)  mind you ! which is why I mix my own soils typically but I have now seen what the pros and spending $$$$$ on R&D can come up with.

For growing with no need to drastically budget: highly recommended

For growing with budget in mind: make your own if you’ve time and space

Effectiveness: 9/10

provided all my plants needs and buds grew nicely. Seriously sticky buds covered in trichromes. Smell strong too.

ease of use: 9/10

can’t see how you can make things easier tbh.

Watering daily advised especially if not in a big pot. Dry back is much quicker than a typical soil due to 50% perlite. This allows for more frequent watering. This could be a good thing (more yield) though you don’t get the typical advantage of a regular soil in that you can get away with a weekend away as you don’t need to water as much.

Value for money: 5/10

if reused 6/10

it is a lot of money for a bag of soil. A ridiculous amount imo given amount of perlite.

in going the preloaded nutrients way you are supposed to be saving on the money you spend on expensive water in bottled feeds but with sohum you are now just spending that saving in convenience! So therefore not saving any money.

However.... when you factor in its reuse the cost will come down each time... but you will have to re-amend with nutrients..

I am also currently testing the Eco life soil and life cycle and charge products which seem like they will be much better value for money - to be confirmed soon enough !

Hope this is of help to others..

smoke report still to come remember !

happiness is growing your homegrown 😉

@chillbert nice round up mate and good review of the soil👍 I Haven’t used soham and I have nothing against it but if in the uk and you don’t have time to make your own support ecothrive I think. It’s made in the uk Sheffield and not imported and in these brexit times may turn out to be cheaper. Be good to see the comparison when you’ve finished in the eco thrive ✌️

@3plantspete

yes mate I’m with you on supporting local trade and my initial impressions of the eco life soil is that’s it’s a better looking and feeling soil and it smells like soil too which is a good thing imo

looking forward to closing my loop and become another step closer to self-sufficient / local inputs 👍

happy growing bro

Sohum grown Buttercream Gelato weighed in at a very nice 175g

6.25 oz grown on water only plus 3x doses with biosys from eco life

that makes the £40 price tag seem not so bad lol

It will be amended with eco thrive and charge, and reused in a couple of weeks.

The buds smoke well, lots of taste, prob better than first run with it which was bottle fed organic nutes in canna soil.

and here are the jars looking fuller again 👍🙏
