Plan for the grow:
This will be a straight forward grow, just topping twice early on for 4 mains
This grow challenge from another site seemed fun but I wanted to run my diary here. Got this idea from keeno as he put his NYGC Agent Orange run on his site. That means I automatically opt out of the prizes but I still get the weed so good enough. As per the rules the seed will wet at midnight my time. Everything is gathered for the first step.
This is a definite medical run for me. Rhino Ryder is described as “Medicine Man Auto” and I’m hoping this is correct. Like some others here this is my main pain med. First step will be soaking the seed. Plan is to lightly scuff the seed by putting them in the tube of rolled up sandpaper and gently shake 3 of 4 times to scratch the outer layer. Then they will soak in rainwater till morning. At that time they go into jiffy pellets to germinate. This diary is being built early because I don’t want to be up all night on the computer. Here’s my stuff to start the process
here’s my seed scuffing kit
4-20 comes very soon mates!!
Nice mate! How do you use the seed scuffing kit?
It’s real basic as you don’t want to damage anything, just scuff the seed coat to let moisture in easily. I cut a sheet of sandpaper into 4 and roll one piece around something like a pencil and tape it into a tube with the grit inside of the tube. In this case size of the piece doesn’t matter so long as you can roll it but sharpness does help. I use a new piece of 220 grit. Cover the ends with your fingers with the seed inside and gently shake a few times, is say no more than 3 to 5 times. You are only trying to nick the shiny coat a tiny bit and to the eye it might not show but small scratches give big results. Much easier for water to enter the embryo and a better/faster germination rate in my opinion.
Morning monkey, with u all the way bro love the autos man😉the rhino is good shit for meds. They will be ready in 10weeks, none of this waiting around to see if males, females changing the light carry on😁good stuff getting the autos going good luck ya wee monkey😁💨
Playing strictly by the rules and starting on 4-20, the seeds are now on their path.
The seeds were scuffed and soaked at midnight. This morning the seeds had sunk and it was time to plant. 2 Jiffy Pellets were soaked and blotted till they were damp sponge moist but no more than that.
The seeds were covered by only about 2 or 3 millimeters and now are sitting on a windowsill. In the picture the seeds are still visible and were covered after the picture was taken. Once I’m done chopping and cleaning the tent they will go to their forever home. Thanks for reading, more later.
Tent was available so after cleaning we are on the way. Out of the window and under the lamps.
Tents always look so big in the very beginning.
@monkeydo, your seed scuff method is very interesting, think I'll have to give it a try.
Woke up this morning to find sprouts. It wasn’t my plan to post till the first true leaves appear but with a few interested in the seed scuff method I’d give a reference for germination.
This is the first time I tried using waste heat from my light to aid germination and I won’t recommend it because if you do it wrong you can ruin your light and possibly hurt yourself but I’ll elaborate. It just so happens that the meanwell driver on my SP150 was running at 37c so it was a very good heat mat. Using a jar lid and a clear cup, I utilized the warmth to nurture the seed very careful to keep the puck only damp sponge wet and let absolutely no liquids get on the driver assembly.
Both seeds are up and healthy. At this point the are moved into the light and given a very weak Rhizotonic and Tea mix and watered with a pipette.
In a couple of days it will be time to transplant so I’ll start to buffer some coco today.
Day 1 Veg
Short update on progress. Today the first true leaves have arrived. This is very good, the first node is already here 4 days after wetting the seed...Woohoo!!
This is great and from here on out I’ll try to update the grow every Friday. Have a wonderful weekend Percy’s growers and stay safe everyone.
There’s nothing special to report this week. The plants look fine and are growing well. They were transplanted to cups 3 days ago and are settling in still. I’m seeing the same problem as some others growing autos in a flower tent and with only 12 hours of light. The low light hours is not allowing the seedlings to accelerate their growth very well. They are on dilute rhizo and tea right now and are getting foliar feed of kelp and weak grow nutes. They are just starting their 3rd node now.
sorry about the sideways pic. It was fine on my phone. Hopefully I’ll update again on next Friday. Thanks for reading and as always, your questions, comments, and suggestions are welcome here.
The grow looks stalled, very little change this week. Looks like the coco was old and holding to much water, not enough air so the roots were stressed. Repotted yesterday with fresh new coco and pearlite and moved to a different area with 20 hrs light per day. After only one day they are looking better but you might not notice without a before pic.
Foliar feeding will continue this week, Kelp and very light grow nutes, and hopefully a major change will happen this week.
Thanks for reading and as always, all questions and comments are welcome and encouraged.
These plants have been very stubborn and have taken their time to start looking happy. They are vegging 20 - 4 under a small COB led light after being repotted in new coco.
They did reach the 5th node this week and I topped them at the 3rd node.
nutes are at .5 EC and foliar feed is continuing
The seeding just can’t catch a break! At this point they should be aggressively growing and starting preflower soon.
When repotting, the roots were just very weak. This is the second use on this coco and it looks like it’s already degrading fast. Very dark brown and waterlogged. The ph on the runoff is odd, very low, even with pure water. These will be kept as long as I have space but new seed is already sprouted as a replacement.
These are in a window, my favorite place to start seed.
New coco arrives on Monday so it’s a brand new start then. Going back to coco that lasted better and made stronger root balls. Live and learn, all coco isn’t the same.
In a last effort to help the Rhino Ryder seedlings, they got moved outside into some filtered sunlight. I had heard this can reinvigorate plants sometimes. This morning, even at only 3 cm tall, the most sickly plant started blooming. This is officially my first lost cannabis plant, oh well, it happens. The root stress was just to much. I’d post some pictures but for some reason this thread isn’t allowing me picture access right now.
The new Violet Kush seeds are growing strong under the old reliable “69” watt cfl light.
So switching quickly to a different device I can add pics now
The larger plant might pull through but will require an extensive quarantine before going anywhere near a tent. Probably not worth it.
Now that lockdown is easing some there hasn’t been as much time for growing and I’m a little late with updates. After determining I was dealing with bad media I restarted the entire run. Right now there are three plants that are 2.5 weeks old. Two Violet Kush autos will stay in this tent and a Bruce Banner 3 auto and a GelatOG auto will get the second tent and new spiderfarmer light.
The Bruce Banner 3 is on the left and it has already been topped twice. The violet Kush plants have only been topped once. The Kush has been growing so fast that it was showing cal/mag stress but she has calmed down now and now looks happy again.
It’s about time to increase the light level and get these ladies moving again. The second SP 150 will get added this afternoon.
The original Rhino Ryder plants were just put outside to die. One did just that but the other is stunted but live and blooming outside.
Growing outside in a subtropical wetland environment brings lots of insect pressure and the small caterpillars love weed apparently. Treated with BT and now we wait Since she was written off as a loss anything she delivers will be a bonus. We will see if she makes it to the end.
