Good afternoon friends

I am unsure whether this is a deficiency, or an excess. Looking at the diagnosis guides in the forum, I'm assuming too much/too little calcium maybe?

Strain

Dark Wizard Cannatonic
Seeds Genetics : G13 Haze x MK Ultra
Genotype : 50% Indica / 50% Sativa
THC : Low
CBD : High
Height : Medium
Suitability : Indoor, Outdoor
Flowering : 8 – 9 Weeks
Flavour : Sweet wood
Yield : 500 gr/m2
Indica / Sativa : 50% Indica / 50% Sativa
Breeder : Dark Wizard Genetics
Smell Level : Low
Type : Feminized

Feed and medium

Started in typical seedling compost, and then moved on to a mix of garden centre compost and some home made compost (mostly kitchen scraps composted over the last few years, with a very healthy worm population).

Augmented with some 46-0-0 nitrogen in the veg stage.
20/03/2022 - 7-7-7 in water
08/04/2022 - 5-5-10 in water

History

This plant was started in late October, 2021 and stayed in veg until 20/03/2022 as it was too tall for the stretch, so had to wait until I had a new space.
It's now 1.65m tall.
It had red mites mid-late March, but I treated that with neem, dish soap, and potasium carbonate spray, which solved the problem.
It has been relatively healthy up until now, aside from a nitrogen deficiency a couple of times.

Water

I use tap water, which is:

Hardness Information: Total Hardness level of 18 mg/l Ca, classified as Soft

  • 45 parts per million
  • 3 Clarke degrees
  • 5 French degrees
  • 3 German degrees

This "rust" appearance started about 3 days ago on one leaf, but is now appearing on several leaves.

All help is really appreciated.

How often have you been watering? Have they been more- wet or dry?

Was this compost aged or still in the process of breaking down?

@woodi2 I water generally once a day, between 0.5L to 1.0L depending upon when I'm home, and whether it seems like it needs water. I have under watered a couple of times, such that it sags, but generally I think that I've gotten the watering about right, not too wet, not totally dry.

The home-made compost is difficult to age, but I'd say about 3-5 years old at the bottom of the compost bin, it seems really stable.

@noodlesoup, we'll have to get a soil expert in here, this is above my pay grade and mental dexterity. Maybe @chillbert will be around sometime. 👍

A few things jump out in this grow. The leaves have a good bit of downward clawing indicating a possible excess nitrogen concentration in the soil. That 46-0-0 ammonium nitrate would be a no go for me in growing cannabis especially if you’ve planted in compost. The “rust” color areas are most probably calcium deficiency caused by some lockout issues in the soil from too much of something. This is probably going to need to be flushed thoroughly so we can get a good starting point. The watering frequency is probably way too high as well. Cannabis in soil likes to cycle from being fairly wet to fairly dry. A good practice is to only water your plants if the pot weigh only half of what a fully watered plant weighs. You might be killing these with kindness.

Lets see what @chillbert and @twisted1 have to say on this as I trust these guys with soil science more than I trust myself.

@monkeydo Hi Monkey
Thank you for the feedback.
My initial soil was fairly poor as I only had the potting & seedling compost to hand, the added the top dressing of my own compost as the plant grew and I changed pots.

The nitrogen 46-0-0 was only a small amount, probably a teaspoon or so of the granules, as a top dressing around 3 months ago, after which the plant picked up (it had been showing nitrogen deficiency at the time), and I haven't used it since.

If it is a nutrient lock out, then I guess I need to find a way to get a ph reading?
I have some paper test strips, but I'm not sure how I test dry soil with those.

Thank you.

Definiently a lookout that's all i can say, agree with monkeydo that 46-00-00 ammonium nitrate is a no go for me.

This is the nitrogen product that I used a few months ago:

URPril™ 46-0-0 Slow Release Nitrogen Fertiliser TOP DRESSING or WATER SOLUBLE Prills Form. Grass Lawn Shrub Tree Plant Foliage BOOST

I probably used a teaspoonful as a top dress.

@noodlesoup hi mate,

i would water only for a while (with water in a ph range of 6 to 7 is good for soil ideally around 6.5) de-chlorinated (leave to sit 24hrs if tap water / use air bubbler if u have one)

flushing the plant at this stage will result in waterlogged anaerobic medium which wont really help imo as you've only a few weeks of flower left.

your leaves are dark and the plant has enough N to last the rest of the grow so no more feeding, just water for a week or so

the chlorosis (leaf damage / browning dead spots etc) that has occurred cannot be remedied and some further chlorosis is likely but will slow down with luck..

if youre able to do some soil and pH tests this could give u some more info which could be useful for learning what happened but you dont have much time to remedy a soil - best case is not to make the issue worse at this stage

you will still get a decent crop of nice buds so dont stress too much if u can help it

I'm sure u got the idea from the others slow release nutrients with any high numbers in the npk ratio are best avoided in canna grows as its hard to determine what exactly your plant will eat and when .. and slow release nutes once put in cant be changed ..

its not that they cant be used, more they can be a bit hit and miss, and u cant control when they release there contents

good luck moving on .. water only for now and let medium dry back between each watering

happy growing

Hi @chillbert thank you for taking the time to have a look and respond.

(I tried to post this reply earlier but it didn't work, I got a 'something went wrong with your data' or similar message, I'm not sure why.)

I'll definitely go with your advice; I think that there's only a couple of weeks to go.

I try to water "only just enough" and sometimes have had the plant sagging due to underwatering, if I've been away during the usual watering time.
This is my second grow, so I clearly have a lot to learn, something that I feel confident in achieving over time with the help of the great community here at Percy's, and the HOHG podcast.

Many thanks to you all for taking the time to help,

Noodle!

Just an update for you:

I followed the suggestions of continuing to water as necessary and let the plant complete it's flowering to the stage that i wanted.
I was able to harvest approximately 90g of bud, which has since dried, is really helping me with my pain management.

During the day I am able to dose low enough to help with the pain, without impairment.
During the evening I'm able to enjoy a slightly greater dose for an enjoyably stimulating and relaxing buzz, whilst still helping to relieve the pain.

Thank you all for being an awesome community, and for taking the time to help us all in our times of need, thank you @woodi2 @monkeydo @chokopops @chillbert

I took some cuttings that have established themselves, and so I hope to have a future harvest to keep my problems under control.

I'm currently enjoying the Hermaphrodite episode of the podcast, fab stuff!

Thank you, Noodle.
