I had a 20l bag full of leaves and stems from last years harvest and a little bit of coco and dirt. It had been sealed for a year and did not smell bad when i opened it, however there was an intense ammonia smell a day later after spreading in the bed.
After some reading I decided to till in activated carbon and water it down.
Any suggestions on what else I can do for this? Organic solutions preferred.
Yeah the smell has gone down a lot since adding the activated charcoal and turning it. Still smells, but I can no longer clean glass with the fumes.
Added a little hydrated lime last week and watered. Several days ago I noticed the ammonia smell disappeared, so I broadcast clover, asian basil, buckwheat, dwarf wheat and different bean seeds in the bed.
This morning I took a peek under the soil and I am seeing healthy sprouts. Iwill check again in a week, but I think the soil is almost ready
