Help with identifying deficiency or excess
My method for balancing EC is to start as a seedling at 1/4 recommended rate of your nutes, cal/mag and base nutes. Measure the EC of the feed and then measure the EC of the runoff. If the two numbers are within 0.200 of each other you are good. If it’s too low increase the input feed by 0.200 on the next feeding and check again. If it’s too high decrease by 0.200. Make sure to give your plants a couple days to stabilize before changing the feed again as it takes them a bit to adjust themselves. There really isn’t a magic number to begin as each strain will feed differently.
Just a quick update before lights out for the day. Plants are looking healthy and growth is good! Thanks a ton Monkey! Pics attached.
Next is to get to work on the training. Maybe start a new seed from scratch ? I have the space and the light.
I can only tell you how I approach this and why I do it. If it’s available to me I prefer to buffer with rainwater. With rainwater my background EC is almost nonexistent so I’m more comfortable with it over my tap water which is really bad for hydroponics, my tap water background EC 550-600. My coco brick is hydrated and then washed to remove most of the super fine stuff, the coarse stuff is the best. Mix cal/mag at the recommended rate on the label and soak the coco overnight. Drain and then I mini flush the coco because the seedling won’t appreciate the high EC in the coco from cal mag. Last step is to mix a solution of just base nutes only at 1/4 recommended rate and water the empty pot to put some nutrients in the media and then plant the seed. In the early seedling phase I don’t usually monitor EC overly closely and more to prefer keeping the feed mostly based on root growth for the first week or two. Push the root feed like Rhizotonic or Kangaroors heavily first and it will help get them a stronger beginning. Around the second week I start working on EC in and out.
The step it looks like you are missing is a mini freshwater flush after you buffer. Mini flush in that for a 10 liter pot you only need 8-10 liters to remove some of the excess cal/mag and that should lower that 1.8 EC in the coco and make the seedling happier. Hope this helps in some way
Hey folks! Who around here do I turn to for help with DIY nutes ?
Thanks a ton!
No one! He ho!
Ok. i will ask here.
I have now encountered this problem every time I have mixed a certain recipes Concentrate A.
For a 100x strength, I am, in 1 litre distilled water, mixing :
Calcium Nitrate @ 139gms
Potassium Nitrate @ 43gms
Mg EDTA @ 19.5gms
My usual method is to use hot water to first mix in the CalNit, then the Mg and the Potassium nitrate.
It al dissolves easily into an absolutely clear liquid, and seems to be working fine, as can be seem from the plants image attached in my previous post. However, after a few weeks, one day suddenly ill notice, and I suspect its the Calcium, precipitates out in the form of solid white chunks.
Image below, not the clearest, but what i have for now. So that's a waste of the concentrate and I figure i did something wrong, and remake a fresh concentrate for the same situation today evening after like maybe 3-4 weeks since i mixed the current batch in.
Any clues ? Im stumped. Am I mixing it wrong, but then it would take 3 weeks for the stuff to fall out ? Thanks folks.
Hey folks! Hope all good!
So Im still not used to how different the plants look under these LED lamps. does not help that I have red green colour blindness.. Or so im told. I dont know any better.
Over the past days the leaves have been going all pale, the new growth seems a little strange, a little more spindly. Now im still playing around with the nutes, so its quite pointless asking for feed advise. But i would love an education in identifying defficiencies.
(I have discovered a huge problem with the water im using to mix my concentrates. So I know the feed is inaacurate)
I broke a fresh leaf now that really looked a lot worse under the lights that it does outdoors early morning. But then the Fan leaf, am I back in a calcium deficiency ?
3 leaves, fresh medium and old.
Thanks a ton folks!
Educate me please. Below are two leaves from the same plant. Am I correct in assuming the Left one is showing primarily magnesium def, and the right one Calcium ? Or are they both different levels of the same Calcium and Magnesium def ?
Thanks a ton!
Not getting much traction are we... i shall persist! 😉
So of the 2 plants im attempting, the one monekydo helped with here is growing fairly healthy i think, the other, larger, in a bigger pot not so much. Leaves above from larger plant. My runoff was not ample and the coco was getting quite hot, last evening flush and feed and some improvement on some new shoots.
Then I notice the specks on some lower leaves, and the mite that killed my last grow. Sorry bout the blurred image, best I could do. Spider mites ?
So made a 1l tap water + 2ml of a neem extract insecticide which reads :
Azadirachtin E.C. 1% w/w, 10000 ppm + a drop or two of a Silicon Based Non Ionic Adjuvant
Foiler spray with much from below. Light off and a breeze for a couple of hours, tent is open.
Repeat 3 time, once every 3rd day.
RH is bout 50-60 and Tem mid to high 20*c
Is this ok ? I would have liked to ask here for help before doing anything, but from what I saw last time around im not too sure I have the time. I also have some isopropyl alcohol if thats a solution.
Thanks a ton!
of.. and a pic of the plants, quick light on for the pic. They have been showin preflowers for a bit now, but not really flowering...
Left one is the one with major nute problems and the bugs, right one is the one monkeydo helped out with. Cheers folks! be safe.
Having had spider mites largely ruin my previous crop, I now take them very seriously.
I treated with Neem oil around 18 days or so ago and have repeated twice since preventatively.
So so difficult to give an assessment from your initial pictures and frankly because I do not consider myself any kind of authority. However those leaves do look remarkably similar to how mine initially looked.
Hope you've caught them in time.
I would definitely treat with some neem oil spray before you go into flower. Try and get rid of them, or prevent them from spreading any further.... maybe getting some nematodes and adding them to the grow room will help.
The plants don't look bad, a little effected by the bugs by the look of it. But they don't look out of control, and you should be able to get a decent handle on it
This post might help
Thanks a super toploader and Macky!
I have seen that article Mackie, and have soap on order. In the meantime i used the non organic (i think) insecticide and I hope thats ok.
Topside, interesting you saying on the leaves, I have been under the impression all of my problems are nutrition related, you saying you had a similar looking plant but it was the bugs ?
In my inexperience I too thought I'd buggered the nutes up, I also thought I'd got the lighting wrong. However eventually I looked hard for signs of mites and found them.
Congratulations you have spotted them yourself and are taking action. Part of the learning process I suppose 😁
Do excuse me for posting a picture on your thread, but thought you might be interested in how things progress if undiagnosed.
It would have been an unmitigated disaster were it not for the fact I turn most of my crop to oil anyway. The largest colas were decimated really. The popcorn was good though and encouraged me to get straight back on that horse ! 😁
hha, I actually do know what happens if you just wish the problem away. I had a good looking auto lemon and another one of the above plants in my previous attempt (seeds from a hermied GSC auto), had to throw away the GSC and most of the lemon auto, along with a early harvest.
Its what im smoking now. Its ok. Better than the bag for sure. And all the damage was like done overnight. Had webs all over the flowers.
I was trying the previous grow in DIY RDWC rig, and over the mites I had some serious infestations in the root zone too think they were fungus gnats, sound right ? So moved to coco for this one. Let us see.
Its a much cleaner grow, and I have it rigged now with a automated watering rig, which is what caused the run off to go off, but think I should have it dialled now. Also moved it to only 1 plant, gonna hand water the big one. The collection buckets are from the aforementioned RDWC kit.
Its a real clean grow compared to the DWC, weather here meant there was always a lot of condensation on the buckets (I was using a chiller), and just wet and messy. This is nice, but I cant be hand watering everyday. If, things ever do go back to normal, i used to be on the road a lot.
So here is what im trying to make work now. I have another automated pump coming in, and will prolly dose the second plant independently. For the res, I have a air stone and a wave maker or something inside. Keeps it moving, and the EC and pH have remained stable over few days so far. Maybe more air.
The wave maker inside is keeping the waters temps high, but think should be ok for coco ? Maybe add some beneficial bacteria and fungi to the res ?
Please post all the pics you want. I dislike lonely threads, especially mine
Hey folks! Quick question simple answer please.
Is this a magnesium deficiency ? And if so, how far along ? Thanks a ton! Pic taken outdoors.
plants from an hr from lights out. Sure they would look better under natural light. But you folks lemme know.
Take care folks!
