I'm always on a budget and haven't been able to pick up a good microscope or Jeweler's loupe for checking tricombs.
Though I did find a microscope app, and actually there's several of them. Until researching throughout the last year I didn't know anything about waiting until your plants Tricombs starting turning Amber, around 30%, is when you should harvest.
Checking the tricombs under certain lighting is probably my biggest question, besides do you think the micro app (as seen in the pics) is going to do the job correctly. I have blurpel Amazon lights, currently with the veg and bloom switches on. Using a led headlamp with the flashlight on the phone during microscope use while checking the tricombs. Does it make a difference in having the bloom lights on or off (veg lights only).
As you'll notice in the pics below, appears most of the tricombs have all turned milky. If my calculations are correct for the starting date of flower, these would be around day 32, giving a fluctuation of 5 days forward (37). Which leaves around 23 to 18 to put the flowering at 55 day's.
I want to make sure I'm going to notice these tricombs start to change Amber. So I'm not just curious if this app is good enough, but what is the best lighting for checking the tricombs under. And using the app with my spectacles looks a lot better than the pics, as the app comes with a camera, but it hasn't been adding the pics to my gallery. Not sure how to fix that. So these are snapshots while using the app.
In the past, before knowing to wait until tricombs have started to change Amber, used to watch and wait for 90% of the pistils/hair's to change reddish. Which getting close to that point. Plus gave this autoflower it's last shot of bloom nutes, I'll be flushing it from here on out.
@whispererofweed I like taking pics of them under the grow lights, but to check the trics I prefer to do it under a normal white light its easier for me to see the difference, My eyes are not that good

@twisted1 Thanks...
So I guess the best option would be to take a lamp in the room while using the led headlamp with the microscope.
My eyes aren't what they used to be either. That's why I wear ? specs while reading or looking at the trics. Gettin old sure is fun ?
@whispererofweed yeah getting old sucks, I bought a cheap USB microscope and a cheap jewelers loupe it was getting hard for me to see.
like this one helped me out.
mine came with the usb adapter to fit a c style for my phone or I can use it with my laptop usb
they are cheap but they help my old eyes out

@whispererofweed If you can tell the difference between clear cloudy and amber with the app then its probably good enough Ill try to get some pics from my scope today

Yeah I like the USB one's that work with the phone. But some months squeezing out an extra $25 is like squeezing blood from a turnip lol
Eventually I'll get one of those USB off Amazon.. I used to have a Jeweler's loupe but the light quit working and believe I thrown it away months ago. But with this app you can see the single trics fairly well I think. IMO. I can distinguish the top head from the stem. But I want better, eventually of course.
Which here's another question?
Someone in a group on FB shown a picture of a trics, clear, then cloudy, then beginning of the amber. Though he had a drawing where it shown the stem looking normal, like a mushroom still, then turning into a Spike with the head sitting on top as they turn amber, verses while still clear and beginning of cloudy. And supposedly when the trics do this, is really when it should be harvested, no matter the % of Amber trics.. Anyone else heard of this? Or just another person throwing misinformation around.
@whispererofweed Not sure havent seen the pic, I go by 10% amber, thats where i like it. others like more amber or less its more of a preference
too much amber makes me real lazy if you see the pic again post it so we can see it im sure some one will chime in on it

Not the best pics but this is from the usb microscope

Ooohhh yeah that's definitely a lot better.
I can see a huge difference. Now I'll be nervous if I don't see any turning amber soon. My GG auto #1 is at day 32 or so of flower. Supposed to finish out between 55-65 days. When should a person normally start to see some turn amber. And I would assume that would start with the highest colas to the light.
@whispererofweed most of what i grow are 8 wk flower ill start flush at wk6 then wk 7 i start watching them wk 8 there usually ready or close
