Security for controllers with bluetooth and wifi

@organicviper I'm glad youv raised the question as I'm buying the whole spider farmer intelligent inline fan set in the next 2/3 weeks and never thought about the security side of things,when it comes to WiFi I'm twitchy regardless what it is but using the Bluetooth side of it shouldn't be an issue I wouldnt have thought, 

I'm clueless when it comes to wireless severes and safe secure networks and things but I'm thinking if you get the app then turn all data of other then bluetooth it should be secure between your phone and the set up or what ever your using,hopefully someone can answer this one I'd like to know to,good question growmie 👍

I just bought and installed my AC infinity extractor with the controller 69. I have my Bluetooth set up to it. I haven't linked my wifi yet. I love this thing so far. I can monitor my fan, temp, humidity, and VPD. I don't know a whole lot about it yet. The manual that comes with it is very nice.

I don't worry about security risks with the app. I believe they have bigger fish to fry than me. 

@bangswitch2a Good to hear your pleased with the set up it looks great for a reasonable price, I am probably overly paranoid.  Can you use it as a stand alone unit without bluetooth or wifi?

If your worry is in regard to registering your kit for online web access- 

go look on AC Infinity’s site, look at all the different non- Grow related shit they sell. How in the hell is Johnny law gonna know if you’re monitoring and controlling a tent, or a home theater system!?

plus, ac infinity is not going to bit the hand that feeds them. 
I personally think this is a low security risk, and have no concerns with my ac infinity kit. IMO !

@organicviper yes, you sure can use it as a stand alone unit. No need to set up Bluetooth or Wifi.

I do worry at times that if someone is going around looking for grow rooms and spots my bluetooth/wifi grow equipment that they could potentially see something...then I sober up and realise I was just in a deep paranoia trip. 🤣 

In all seriousness, just take some basic measures like ensuring your wifi passwords are strong. You could restrict access to MAC addresses so that only certain devices can connect to your wifi but that's not a simple task for most users.

It's worth renaming devices that could be a red flag. Obviously it's not a smart idea to have a wifi thermometer in your tent named, 'grow tent thermometer'. 

In my (illegal) area there are people selling commercial-scale used equipment on Facebook Marketplace and no one is getting investigated for obviously being involved in large-scale hydro set ups. I'm pretty certain you don't need 10 x monster carbon filters for your strawberries. They've got bigger fish to fry than that. 

Hi @brownthumb, I have gone ahead and ordered an AC Infinity controller.  I agree with your sentiments, once I start over thinking things paranoia gets a grip for a while.
