@echo You mean to adjust the speed I assume mate?

Zn would know best about this I think. You have to use a certain type, to prevent damaging the inner mechanisms in the fan.

I just use a cheap one I got from the grow shop, nothing special. MY fans have been fine with 😉

@echo I had same problem, upgrade my fan to RAM 4", great fan but was a bit noisier and even on low setting was still too powerful and kept sucking all the humidity straight out the tent.

I went to my local hydroponic shop and they had a cheap one which was about £10, possibly like the one Mackys talking about but I was a little worried about damaging the fan so spent a bit more and got and SMSCOM Fan speed controller, think I paid about £30-40 for it. I run mine on about 30% at the moment which is perfect for keeping RH right and it also does reduce the noise quite considerably aswell.

Hope that helps mate Thumbs Up

In the USA one cheap option is from Harbor Freight Tools. They are Chinese made but the speed control has worked for me on lots of things from drills, sanders, routers, and even my extractor fan.

If your exhaust fan does not have a capacitor (and most of the 4" ones dont) the cheap controllers will not work on low speeds as there is not enough voltage/current available to counter the torque of the motor due to the way they work (simple answer)..its possibly why you're having issues with el cheapos...

The smscom uses PWM afaik which doesnt reduce voltage/current but time power is applied to the fan, like very fast start/stop which reduces speed as a result

Most of the expensive ones use this tech too
