I realized I haven't heard anyone mention this before. Autos are a cross with ruderalis to get the autoflowering trait. Does anything else change along with that crossing?

If you had buds of both, would there generally be any notable difference in potency, appearance or smell?

Yes, autos do differ from the photo strains but that difference is becoming less and less each year as breeders continue to improve the autoflowering lines. Typically photos tend to be more potent but there some very potent autos out there as well. Breeders sometime add genetics to an autoflower to enhance it in some way to make it more like the photo period plants would be too.

Short answer is yes, they are differences but each case is different

@buster2704

Yeah, it's bred to Cannabis ruderalis, which is a subspecies native to Eastern Europe and Russia that has the autoflowering gene. It has a very low amount of THC.

@buster2704 Yeah, it's crossed with whatever strain to make an autoflower version of it. And then probably bred to itself for a few generations to get the traits of the parent strain stable in it while keeping the autoflower genes.

@buster2704 It sure does, I imagine like crossing any strain when you pop the seeds your going to see different expressions from both parents and some leaning more into either of them. I just made some seeds crossing a autoflower male with a couple of different strains (rainbow belts, motor breath 15, the underground and turban garlic) I haven't popped any of them cause I haven't finished shucking them but plan on doing a couple pheno hunts to try to stabilize the autoflower trait in them.

Yea as all have said above the auto gene is from ruderalis back in the low Ryder days the THC was kinda Low etc now days they normally have a stud of an auto they'll breed to whatever strain there making in to an auto so there normally is a bit of variation between the photo and auto it's different doesn't necessarily mean worse especially nowadays
