I was wondering if everyone is using the cloth covers on there carbon filters. And if anyone reverses the flow thru the filter to help extend the life.
When do you decide its time to replace the filter by reduced flow or its ability to remove odor, Im legal and i love that i come in my house and smell the plants but have never noticed it outside
I have never reversed the flow, But i do wash the filter cover between grows, This grow i started with a clean filter cover but recently started noticing my temps were starting to climb slowly. ( Normally 77f but climbed to 84f ) after checking my inlet ducting to ensure the runs had minimal bends and the temp where the air is drawn from is still normal I pulled the cover off and the temps fell back to normal. So after a good wash things are good again.
It probably choked up because i have been mixing soil in the grow room and vacuuming up the mess a lot more lately its cold outside.

Hoover thr filter ?
Suckin on Diesel
@woolieback Lol i was thinking since i usually shut my tent down for a day or 2 while cleaning before i start the next maybe sticking it on the outlet and just let it blow in the tent then i can wipe it all up with bleach water. smell is not the issue here, but if i dont use it all the shit collected by the filter would be all over my house where i exhaust from

@twisted1 I hear that buddy my grow is in a dusty place so I do the same, got the ocd when it comes to foreign bodys ect in my house, lose my sh1t if any are in my tents 😆

@twisted1 I've noticed mine getting a lot dirtier lately with the winter months, and I'm producing more humidity and that trapping the flying dust. I don't have an answer for you, sorry. I thought that some how they could be baked or something to clean the carbon but I'm probably wrong. Mine needs cleaning now and it weighs a ton. But unlike you, I have to be very concerned about odor. I may have to think about only using when needed, but it's a pain to install and remove. Great question save some$$$.
@woolieback yeah i just thought it would be good to see how others deal with there filters, not part of the setup we think about much except for hiding the smell but I have found it to be a large factor with temp and humidity control in my tents.

@twisted1 I do hover mine until they look really manky , and same as yourself then like warm water bleach , rinse it

@woodi2 do you run the cover on it? have you tried to blow it out? if so did it help?
before next grow ill try to blow mine out with my leaf blower and see
When mine is dirty my humidity seems to be higher. the humidity is low here 29% so it as it gets dirty i get better humidity high 30's but the temps get warmer in the tent

Many years ago I worked on copy machines for a living. They use activated carbon filters to clean ozone out of the process. When they would start to fail I would wash them heavily with soap and hot water then air dry. It revitalized those filters nicely so as I have one filter now that's failed and it is built so it can be opened, I'm going to remove the charcoal and boil it then rinse it to see what happens. All this indoors of course in case there is a release of terpenes in the process. I'll report back in a month to see how it went. It sounds good in theory but only a test will tell the truth..

@monkeydo Nice did not think of that hell just soak the whole filter and flush it out good blow it dry if it flows good its a win for my purposes. do you think it would help a filter remove the smell again?

I know it worked with ozone and its worth a shot for terps. Soapy hot water worked before so.... I'm concerned with getting the cheap metal wet because it's going to rust but like I usually say, it's busted already so what damage can it do. Its technically trash and suspicious trash in my area.

@monkeydo True but if its put back in service the air flow would dry it off and would save money being able to get a couple more grows out of it.

@twisted1 I run cover on and cover in. I have two filters, 6"-8", 8" filter with outside cover is in the room, and 6" filter is outside the room with cover rolled inside the filter. this filter gets blown through. It's used for dehuey exhaust. I work with different types of filters and clean ones allow for better flow, but a seasoned one can be useful for trapping more and filtering more. Unfortunately more stress on the fan. So yes cover on for me, and I read it. If it's not pure white it's ok, a little dirt just mean less material that hits the carbon filter. And if it affects your environment maybe try to use it to your advantage if poss. Ya humidity is low for us right at the moment, and I'm trying to make a ton of it and it's showing up on the cover filter. Today is a good day for filter maintenance while the plants are small. I don't wash my filters, just blow out with compressed air. But once the carbon is used up???? That a pricey door stop. That's why I may have to only use when necessary. So that means wrapping it.
