Hey everyone, I love spamming so thought ill post another little diary about my progression in the very neglected garden 😅 lost my recent job so had alot spare time after tending my babies. 🌱
Invested quiet a bit Into the garden already
3 tonnes of seedling soil
50 bags of decorative slate
250L top soil
150L compost
About 2 weeks of therapy/massage bills. (Jk)
Regrets were made after deciding I was redoing the entire grass by hand. Took me awhile to decide though To much excitement very little sense lol
This is a rough photo of before, up close the grass was invested with moss 90% take over and 9% weed leaving like 1% dam grass.
At first I raked the shit out of it took like a day and decided to try compost the moss (lol) there was so much that came off the grass I'm gutted I did get a photo. But I filled 2 compost bins with it 🤭
After seeing the damage I realised I'm better of just starting from scratch. So I forked the living shit out of the soil and turned it all over and raked as much I could
I then added this top soil treated for grass seedling from this rolawn firm, was like £100 per tonn of there soil, cheaper to buy that speciallu for grass seeds then any other soil/prices I found
With all the roots and crap I gathered up I had such massive pile to get rid of I've decided to use this soil for a raised bed and then top it up with some normal top soil and compost but giving it a good height so no bending over is required for the plot,
I circled of a area in the ground and intend to make a 6ftx6ft raised bed with metal roofing sheets as a barrier, be roughly 700mm high of the ground,
(To be brought and made)
I also added stepping stones after the first ton of toil soil went down giving them a jetwash prior, is bit of a mix and match but what we had 😅
I've never grown grass seeds before so shall be interesting see how it goes, I'm currently ready for seeds to go down I believe but wanted the ground to settle more and also allow weeds to come through so I can kill them off before seeds down.
If anyone got any experience to share or any input please do! I have no clue what I'm doing and just spent last few days watching videos 🙃

Couple before photos
Also going to attempt make my own compost, so made a little area in picture 3. Also decided to get rid of all the moss and start fresh, currently layered cardboard and leafs withfood scraps atm
Also made another little raised bed area with outside table to work on but won't be anything special there for awhile 😅

Big job there man. As for how to grow grass.. where I am it’s more about keeping the grass from growing. Any bare patch with a little light and moisture will be overgrown in a month or so. I don’t know much about colder climates tho other than look at your soil ph. From friends that live further north I know moss can become a problem if the ph is out of range for growing grass but again because that’s not common where I live so I have no other details. For weed control there are many selective herbicides to use in turf lawns but you need to be certain any weed control products are compatible with your type of grass. These are designed to kill the weeds and leave the grass alone. Once upon a time I used them regularly, the grass was thick and lush, but my Mrs asked me to stop because believe it or not, she likes the weeds 🤷🏻♂️.

@monkeydo Yeah i didnt realize how big of a job it was untill i turned all the soils for the first time, then i realized i had to rake it about 3-4 times and even then still tons of old roots, i was tempted to go with the herbicides but hit my budget in the end so opted to try without and do the more labour intensive way lol (regrets)
Im more in the south near the sea, i rarely see any nice grass nowadays so was keen to try make my own, i desire that thick lush green so badly! im stunned that your mrs got you to stop! xD although am finding it quiet pricey just to maintain the lush green if able to grow it in the first place lol ive got myself some early fert feed aswell late autum feed and all the seeds, probably spent more on the garden then recent grow setup lol
is there a budget way to test soil PH withouth buying one them ones u stick in the ground, probably dumb question but can i just get a little fabric pot and check ph level before and after it goes into the soil?
I did buy this solution that suppose to kill weeds/moss and save grass but applying it on some the weeds on my grass before i turned it all had no effect and was the perticular weeds tht was resistant to it. so instead buying more i saved 90% tht bottle to maintain the new grass attempt

@rufio Cheers man much appreciated, yeah you not wrong i was just waiting for the right time for that and wanted to keep the garden tidy to stop any pests xD the sole ambition to redo the soil was the gnat problem i noticed, not sure if they just hiding or what but reduced massively just from turning the soil over on a hot week with no rain
anyone know the recommended time for outdoor plant grows for the south UK ?

Love the garden mate, that place looks amazing, If I just randomly saw those pics I would thought it was in Italy, Spain or the south of France or some place like that.
