Hi all, I am looking for suggestions.
I *finally* scored some beans that I have been looking for forever! I got 10 regular seeds (might be male or female). I run RDWC and would love to get ideas on how to wind up with 4 good females I can grow RDWC without too much waste.
Here is my thinking, but I want you all to tell me better ideas!
I would sprout two or three of my beans and take them straight to flower so I can sex them. When I identify a female, I will reveg her to get clones (8) for my RDWC setup. Maybe I keep this reveg as a mother or maybe not. If none of the three beans are female, I do it again in hopes for a female.
This way, I get to hang on to most of the original beans for the next round.
Is there a better way to think about this??
Thanks!

@matommy That's the best way really, pop some beans, grow them flip asap so you can find out the sex, when you're sure, reveg and take cuts..... there are some places that you can send a tissue sample to to find out if its female or not, but you wouldn't have to be in a legal place to do that. Easiest way is like you suggested

@macky awesome, thanks. And I have some time while the girls in the tent now finish their flower. Thanks!!

Would it be faster to do that backwards? Grow them out, take clones and label them, then just flower the plants out. Toss males and clones of males and save the female clones as moms. Then you don't have to re-veg. Then you have the added benefit of growing every plant out completely to find the very best ones. 😀
Space may be more of an issue this way, keeping more plants around, so that's a downside.
I'm not a pro at the clone game yet, so please let me know if I'm wrong here. Just seems easier and I'm all about simple.

@shonuff that's an interesting idea. If I understand you, I could grow my two or three seedlings to the point where I can get clones and take them. Then, flip the originals to flower while the clones grow roots. So then once I know sexes, I have the clones I want. I can clone 14 plants in a 2x2x2 cube so space for that isn't a problem. I am not sure how much insight I get into which phenos I would want, unless I am missing something. Maybe someone is just obviously better from the start?
So this sounds clever and like it could save me some time. Thank you.

@matommy You gain insight by growing out and smoking the original flowering plant of course. 😀
That would depend on your timing and goals as well. In order to gain that insight you would need to flower those originals all the way which could hamper your goals for the grow I guess. Just an idea.

@shonuff I really appreciate the ideas. I will probably do what you're suggesting, but gamble on the first girl being clone-worthy (a Seinfeld reference!). I run RDWC, so having all of the buckets in sync is a must, so I try to run one strain at a time since by definition everyone shares the same nutes. It is a pretty important downside to RDWC, but there are also real upsides.

Hey @matommy, your right, clones are the best thing for RDWC. Your method will work and so will @Shonuff. The method he is speaking of is common and works well. This way you have the plants through flower and you get to see all of her traits. Plant structure, bud size and quality and if the plant hermies and what phenotype. All mom plant that don't make the grade get tossed and so do her clones. It can be a process that will need time and space. Check out Jacks Farm diary here for more details on cloning.
Yeah Elaine had to be sure her date was "spongeworthy", stock was limited. lol
@woodi2 I agree. I think @shonuff has the right idea. I just don't have the patience or discipline to wait to sample my new strain! Once I have some in the jar, I will probably go back and do it @shonuff's way.
And thanks for the pointer to the grow diary. I should think about doing that too, maybe starting with this run we're talking about!
