Hi everyone,

I want to start my friend on a growing journey, literally one plant, just to get used to growing their own medicine and see if it’s a hobby they would like to stick with if they enjoy it which I think they will! (It’s a surprise)

So can Percy’s help me put together a basic shopping basket for a new grower on a small budget?

Ive got an led I can give them for flower so was thinking of something like a 2x2, t5 light for the seedling veg stage, extraction, filter and a small fan in the tent.

So if anyone can recommend a cheap beginner friendly set up let me know as I’m still learning to grow my self!

Thanks everyone Smile

Hey mate, depending on the amount of coin they have to splash you have a few options, The main considerations are going to be the light, tent/grow area, extraction and air movement. There are quite a few tent kits on Feebay that come with the basics all the way down to the timer plugs. As a first timer these kits are a brilliant way to wet your feet and generally take the guesswork out of extraction fan sizes etc. I would start by working out which size tent/grow area you have to work with, if you are really looking to save some coin then a standalone cupboard from an op shop can be a great place to start and then you can customize to suit. If you feel confident in buying things separately then you can always check ali express or ebay and buy each item individually, this can save you some money and prevent you doubling up on some things. The main thing is that you want to keep the environment as consistent as possible and keep the air moving, humidity levels are important to keep controlled and they are easily kept in check with good airflow and extraction.

As a minimum you will need:

Tent/grow area(reflective panels or white paint if going the grow are route)

Extraction Fan with carbon filter - 2x2 area you want minimum 4 inch extraction but the cfm is the most important, bear in mind the moment you put a carbon filter on it will reduce your cfm so plan for that.

Light source - you said you have an led for flower, is there any reason you cant use this for veg too? most led lights on the market now can veg a larger area than they flower but can do both so save some coin there if possible.

Clip/pedestal fan - This is another thing that is area dependent, I run a 4x8ft tent and have 5 clip fans running constantly, 2 above canopy, 1 at canopy and 2 below the canopy, for a 2x2 i would suggest 1 above and 1 below canopy.

hygrometer/temp- These are quite cheap and the easiest way for you to keep an eye on the environment, there are many options but a cheap one will do fine for starting out.

Timer - this is kind of a crucial element if you don't want to have to switch on the lights and turn them off daily, automating the lights is cheap and easy and saves the hassle of you doing it daily.

After all of that you can build up the extras bit by bit improving on the setup to your desired level as you go, such as humidifiers etc. The most important thing to remember is that its a plant and needs the three basics Light, Food & Air.

I would strongly recommend that as a beginner you start with a regular photoperiod strain or feminized photoperiod strain and learn how the plant develops through its stages and when to introduce certain stressors such as LST or topping etc. Whilst many seedbanks claim autoflowers are easy to grow they fail to mention that the first 4 weeks of an autos life need to be perfect or the end yield will suffer. This is why I recommend photoperiods for first time growers because you are in control of the flowering schedule and if you do accidentally make a mistake or a deficiency crops up etc you can just keep it in veg till it recovers and then flip it when your ready, Autos do what they want when they want and do not care about you or anyone else so they can be finicky and not for the beginner.

That about sums it up as far as a beginner setup, I would strongly advise that you choose an easier medium such as Living soil or Coco to start out as they are generally the cheapest medium to setup and easiest to control through the grow cycle. And of course if you need any help just ask away!!!!

I feel like a, like a slice of butter... melting on top of a big-ol' pile of flapjacks... yeah.

Hey I recommend an Opulent Systems tent. They are really good quality. Black Friday is right around the corner so be on the lookout for deals! There are some good lights out there for cheap right now especially for small areas like a 2x2. There's alot of discount codes out there as well so I'd ask anyone here before ya pull the trigger on some things if they have discount codes for them. I'd stay away from Viparspectra tents.

Nature IS NOT A CRIME! 🤙🍄✌️

@greentomato Hey Bro! Glad to here your getting involved, you wont regret it.

@Bubblehok covered most of it bro, great advice.

Just to second some of that, I started real small, i had a 60x60cm tent and it worked for 2 small plants

id recommend picking up some decent soil (i use canna) and a PH pen, even just a cheap one is fine aslong as u can calibrate it. Grab some PH UP and Down so you can get the right reading you want.

An extractor and a little fan will do the trick to keep good air flow.

Some timers and a hygrometer are helpful too mate : )

Good Luck!

A decent light I'd personally go for LEDs hlg invisible sun etc other brands are available 👌

I'd go for an inexpensive 3x3 tent (as you can get one relatively cheap and it's big enough to get a good yield) save you money in the future

CARBON FILTER(that's a must)

Inline Extractor fan

Soil/Coco/ clay pebbles

Perlite(if not already in the Coco or soil)

Nutrients a+b  and calmag is enough to get you started (you can get away with not even using a+b grow and just using the a+b bloom during veg I doit all the time works a charm)

or soil amendments depending what you use

pH pen EC meter

pH up pH down

Think that's it now just pick your seeds

Here my two cents, and keep it simple.

1- T-5 or T-8 four bulb fixture. Sprout seedling under it with using just two of the four bulbs. Then start veg under it and use all four bulbs.

2- Use living soil, just add water.

3- Small tent or cupboard might be best. You don't need to worry about reflection too much, just basics atm.

4- Move up to the light you have for flower.

5- Timer, thermometer, small fan.

6- You won't need a carbon till later on, like a month and a half or more. Plus it expensive, and if they don't take to growing then someone is stuck with it. Buy it when you need it, incase things change.

Just do it step by step as needed. A nice Auto might be easy to start with.

Just my thought's, good luck and have your friends log-in once they start growing and we'll help too if possible. 👍                       peace

I see you’re looking at a 2x2 tent. In my opinion, if you are going to use a 2x2 then look for one that has 60+ inches of height in the tent. The commonly found 48 inch high tents can be very challenging for new growers and that extra foot (30cm) in height is priceless sometimes.
