Are all novice growers scared of photoperiod plants or is it just me?Convince me to ditch the autos!!I've literally grown just one plant-Barneys tangerine dream auto-and was pretty happy with what I got..I've got more auto seeds to grow and want to know if it's truly worth me stepping it up to photos,,?
@scooterino bro i only grew autos since 2010ish first photos ive grown solo are up on the grow off page , have 3 photo seedlings at the moment , and 1 auto so depending on the yield which visually is massive in comparison , all my best grow gear will be used by the photo-periods from now on

good question bro
i grow photos. I started out with photos. I’ve grown autos too to keep check on their progress over last 10 years odd.
Auto genetics now up to scratch for sure so no problems there.. though I find they tend to not be quite as strong as their photo sisters (not all but some at least) and we’re only talking 1 or 2 % thc etc
For me the biggest advantage of autos is growing outdoors where you either couldn’t finish a photo crop before bad weather or to get multiple crops in areas of good weather.
This is a huge advantage and means for some areas outdoors now a crop is possible.
But for growing indoors photos have the advantage of using less electricity as they only need 12/12 for half their life compared to autos which will want 18 or 20 hours a day. The higher yield per watt per time is easier to achieve with photos on my experience but that may not be relevant if efficiency / yield per watt is not an issue for you.
There are many great auto indoor growers here and if you like it why change?
I’d say buy yourself a timer and go 12/12 lol and try photos for yourself then you can decide !
maybe you’ll end up growing up both!! Growing an auto in your veg tent ain’t a bad idea as you’ll maybe get an earlier yield and smoke!
if you’d asked me 10 years ago, no question photos all day long.. but now there’s a real choice so something for everyone ! 👌
I’m hoping to do a guerilla auto grow this summer outdoors .. super stealth style... in hanging baskets along Downing Street 😉 lol or maybe my local high street if the lockdowns continue 😂 (just kidding)
but seriously I’d love to grow a couple autos this year outdoors, maybe hidden amongst my giant tomatoes 🍅 lol
ps another advantage of photos is taking clones is possible .. so if you get a plant you absolutely love you can clone it and grown again and again .. not possible with autos as they’re on a timer !
Time to pop some more beans 😗
When a new grower becomes successful with either photo or auto plants it isn't uncommon to have the attitude of why switch. I started with photos and still prefer them but have seen the usefulness of the new autos as well. At the moment the only downside to autos is as Chillbert said, a little lower thc in general but yields on par with photo for me at least and the flavors are amazing as well. I think new growers would do well to consider photo period plants so they can take their time learning to train plants to increase yield and quality. Autos are very unforgiving and you have to work very fast, no time for recovery from a mistake. Sooner or later most every grower gives it a go but you will decide where your preference is in the end.

If the yield and potency on photos is way more-then I'm in!Photos just seem like alchemy to a novice like me.I'm currently limited to indoor just because of the weather but a guerilla outdoor grow would be worth doing for sure. The option of cloning too is very appealing-I'd definitely have a go at that.I was kind of thinking that photo growers are like people who maintain that vinyl sounds best-but as soon as I've done my autos...I reckon I might be going photo!..and vinyl IS better ain't it?
I am a cannabis growing novice. My first grow of 4 plants was supposed to be of autos but I bought the seeds from "a dude" and it turns out they were not autos. After flipping them to 12/12 they flowered and after what seems like forever they were finished. It was a crappy yield but that was my fault more than I blame anything else. After that, I bought some auto seeds from a real seedbank and grew those out. They are being smoked right now.
I am enjoying the autos because everything happens so fast it is exciting and as a new grower I am learning from watching them grow and develop. IMHO there are some important things to consider in the photoperiod vs autos decision.
My situation is that I have a 4x2ft tent in my bedroom. I can't get another tent to use as veg both because of lack of room for it and I would not be able to justify the extra power usage to my landlord. With those limits taken into account, here is my reasoning.
1. As someone just starting out with growing, autos allow me to hopefully build up a bit of a stash quicker and with more variety of bud to smoke. At this point, if I had to wait 4 months for a crop I would run out and have to buy some so I am building my stash slower with the autos but without having to spend real money on bud to smoke.
2. Related to the lack of ability to have a separate veg tent is why I am currently attempting a bit of a perpetual grow. In my tent right now I have 3 plants in mid flower, 3 plants vegging, and 4 seeds just popped in the soil. Being able to go with a constant 20/4 light schedule is the only way I can do that. With autos you can have all stages of growth in the same tent. I adjust how much light they get through how close to the light they are. If all goes well I should have 3 plants to harvest every 3-4 weeks.
3. The short night cycle of only 4 hours makes it easier to stay away from problems like light leaks through the tent. My 4 hours of darkness happens during the middle of the night when I have zero lights on to cause an issue.
There are likely a couple more points that my THC addled brain cannot dig up right now. LOL Basically for me with only one tent I would rather do a larger number of smaller crops of autos instead of having to wait 4 months between harvests. If a grow goes south after putting several months into it it would almost be enough to make me quit. I am also getting lots of experience in the sense of more harvests/drying/curing.
I wish you well and look forward to following your progress.
This flight tonight
I love photos...
They forgive my busy schedule and can recover from most upsets before the flip occurs
I can make them as big or as small as I want to with a straight 12/12 from seedling or 4-6 weeks of veg
They dont hate me like autos 😀
Yea i slept on it 😆 Bro i seen a few members here growing autos and if they didn't say you wouldn't know they were not ! Photos I have found thus far is they are more forgiving , Kind of half speed of an auto i still do things on impulse as with an auto but , more laid back . and i filled a 1x1 with 2 photos , had up to 4 autos in there previously , so plant count wise and yeild 😉

can you stack a small mum/clone/veg tent on top with T5 type bulbs that dont draw much?
Sorry for the late post but this is my view on autos vs photoperiod
Advantage of photoperiod plants
- The flower lights on 12 hours instead of 20 hours.
- In the summer it makes it a lot easier to control the temps( lights on at night)
- use half the electric per crop
- using clones means you save 100's a year on seeds
- With a veg and flower room, you pull more crops per year.
- you can keep the plant count low in larger rooms ( can grow plant in a scrog set up)
- With the right clone you will get the best results.
- photoperiod take more stress and you can flower them off at the best time for you.
- You can pull a crop from seed in less time.
- You can grow diffent strain every crop
- Don't need a veg room
- Great for small tents
- can keep the environments more consistent.
So far Im in the same boat, so far have only grown mephisto since starting mid last year really just trying to learn a technique that I suited and fit well with. Going in the organic nutrient tea and soil route I think. But yeah I'm getting a new tent next month and finally bit the bullet and bought my first photoperiod for it. Did a bit of research and settled on karma's white og. I'll definitely do a diary for it when time comes but best of luck to you on this magical educational journey!
I love this comment! To me it's almost like an education one I finally love and want to pursue to the fullest and yeah I won't rush head long but over time I want to give many a technique a go just to learn from it and gain insights. I want to flourish with my plants
