If anyone has any questions about photovoltaic or micro wind turbines, batteries, relays any off grid electronics I love talking that shit! No esb here. The idea of an off grid pv grow very interesting stuff =D I'll start with my own question we convert dc to ac back to dc again to run our lights, has anyone ever thought about skipping the ac phase and running a dc only system directly from the battery? One could even use a battery just to take advantage of cheaper rates

Depends on cable length from converter, DC drops more voltage over distance than AC

@zn you could put the battery bank right beside the tent, there is efficiency loss in converting(inverting) between dc to ac(and back to dc). You normally would use dc between pv and charge controller....to me it seems like a good idea I think some leds even run at around 24v ish, it means one less component in your system maybe a bit awkward tho

@zn what voltage do your lights run at? What is the price of a watt?

@zn my main angle here is, to run your home thru the winter means to have an over sized system every other season seems like a good idea dumping excess power into food production =D

230v and its about 19p a Kw so 0.019 per watt

what do you think about the voltage drop due to shadowing from the clouds on solar panels. if supplemented with wind it may work but then u would need to hope that the wind is blowing consistently while the sun is not shining. one more small scale renewable is hydro but that would fully depend on your surroundings. a few other thoughts on this would be do you need a battery or a few batteries between the source and light to even out the highs and lows from the current produced. i dont think you could cut out the dc to ac conversion because Im sure at some point depending on the light cycle and a few other factors u might make too much electricity which you could sell to the grid instead of just using it up doing another task. ultimately i think this could work efficiently if it was paired with say a green house using supplementary lighting and excess power sent into the grid. my biggest issue is why would we use solar panels to create electricity to turn on a light when we can just put the plant outside its better for our planet that way, i understand if you live in prohibition land because so do i, this would be a cheaper option but again issues with having consistent current so i reckon hydro would be the best option if you could do this or just have an insane amount of storage capacity which would allow a buffer of a day or so just incase there were problems. i have a few ideas on micro generators in my mind but if you had a small stream and a bit of a hill you could build a ram pump and move the water up the hill for next to nothing and then capture the potential energy on its way back down.

Fear is our own Creation

@bogan fok d grid 😜 would cost me more than its worth to sell them ⚡power for pennys, as far as ☁️shadowing over size the system, relay for hot water maybe a relay for backup battery bank and then just accept that on the sunniest days you wont draw the full kwh that the solar array could potentially draw but you are sorted for them bad days, can also feed main 🏠house 🔋battery from smaller 🔋🔋batteries acting to buffer the system so even if the 🌞sun is going in and out you have a stable output and wont 🍴eat into main 🏠house 🔋battery till 🌞sun goes down and smaller 🔋🔋batteries are empty, we've only a small system here but its working out for us main 🏠🔋battery is slightly less than 5kw small 🔋battery feeding house around 2kw, running 3 tents 200watts in each(I'll prob have to turn off two for the harsher months) but hot water and household needs are met its good craic this off grid 💩
