I have noticed in my brief experience that some seedlings look a bit weird, with half-moon early leaves and a twisted look. Then some look text book shape with good symmetry and classic appearance.

Are the ugly ones destined to be inferior?

Should I be popping 4 or 5 per planned plant and picking the best seedling?

It's a valid question especially if using pricey living eco thrive soil!

No point flogging a crap horse!

@teleman, Price of seeds versus Price of soil. Which ones more important to you. Otherwise track and document the progress of a bunch of seedlings. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly and all the others. lol Mine have usually been a horse race till mid point as far as size goes. But bud quality is something different. That's not till full cure. I think an ugly duckling could go either way but if you don't want to chance it, that's understandable. Seeds can be a big enough gamble.

@teleman it's a tough one you never know how there going to grow I mean breeders will always pick the quickest most vigorous plants but who's to say that little runt that takes a bit longer to get big isnt packing a blow away experience or if they have some weird mutant trait at the early stages means they yield double you just never know if they pop and they go let them you may find something special growers can afford to investigate anomalies breeders need strong reliable stock there's soooo many variables I know it's not answer but maybe some sort of insight you just never know if it goes you grow

@teleman agree with above comments ...

funky leaves etc are sign of the in-breeding that include most strains as everything is a poly-hybrid these days, kinda like breeding related cousins all the time ...

runty seedlings can go several ways.. some straighten themselves out and get on how they should... others stay stunted and never catch the pack but may produce the sickest dankest bud but at a much reduced yield per time so may or may not be worth it depending on your aims ..and some are shit and stay shit... only one way to find out

so my answer is depends what your aims are?

germinating extra and keeping the best is what happens in every other plant grown and is what is supposed to happen.. plants make hundreds and thousands of seeds with the intention and design of only the best fittest survive... now just because we put a £5 to £20 sometimes stupid price tag on those seeds they are all too expensive to throw out......!!

or is it more expensive to grow out inferior seed at full price electric and rising ???

interesting isnt it ....

u can see why i decided to start making my own seed...

Time to pop some more beans 😗

Interesting replies dudes👍

The price of seeds is an issue. Especially if you get any duds. You should get more for your money, like with other plant seeds. Like a bag of 50 for 3 quid!
