Hey guys I’m in week 7 of this northern lights auto from Seedsman and with my limited knowledge I would have thought I’d have some pistols by now. I thought it was starting to flower but just keep growing new leaves. I was thinking of leaving it for a week to see happens if still no pistols I was goin the switch light schedule from 18/6 too 12/12 to see if that will encourage it to flower. Am I just being impatient. This is my first ever grow so wasn’t sure if this is normal? Thanks again for any advice

@turbotitch as wollieback and monkeydo said 👍

Not grown lots of autos but a few... I've found some take longer to set flower than others. Judging by yours you could end up with a sizeable plant as it does look like its about to flower... Has it stretched (grown a lot quickly gaining in height) in the last 1-2 weeks? This is a prelude to flowering so shield initiate soon.

Autoflowers are continuing to improve from what I can tell. earlier varieties tend to be less consistent in performance, from height to flowering time and everything in between.

Some breeders who take years to bring a strain to market produce extremely stable and reliable stock.

Seedsman are a highly reputable seedbank and have also breed their own seeds for more than 20 years, but I'd recommend trying a specialist auto flowering breeder perhaps. Mephisto (if you can find any), and fast buds I've seen produce great and consistent results (not by me but a friend).

I'm growing a seedsman NL feminised (not auto) atm and she smells so good (only in wk3-4). No worries about using seedsman.

as for flipping to 12/12, I'd give it a week as it does look like they're turning, but either way looks like it'll end up 16 weeks or so maybe like monkey do and wollieback found with theirs.

good luck with your grow

@turbotitch just an afterthought.... What light are you using? A plant requires more light to produce flower than when in veg! If not enough it would slow down growth !

@turbotitch hi man, I grow autos and wish all mine were like that 😀 another week max and u should see the pistols popping out everywhere 😉 it looks like it is building up to the final push to start the flowering stage. When they are that size in veg, you are going to get a nice harvest. Keep up the good work man👍

Wish I had a solid answer for you. The growing tips look a little like they are trying to initiate bloom, the leaves on the tops are getting thin, but there surely aren’t pistils showing. She will bloom out under 12/12 if you choose to go that route. My very first auto, a Pineapple Express, took forever to flower and even longer to finish. Honestly don’t know why but I know I was over feeding her and I was running under lower power lights to what I use now. Too much nitrogen and not enough potassium can prolong veg but I’m not certain if that is your issue either. Hopefully some other growers will see this and might offer ideas too.

Thanks for the response guys. Ok so I think I’ll leave it as is atm. I’m using a vipaspecta 300, I’m hoping to upgrade in the near future but this is all I have for now.

Evening fellow growers it’s me again 🙈🙈🙈. I’m now on week 11 (day 72) and I do have plenty of pistols and have done for a few weeks now but no actual buds, is this right or do I have a problem. I was expecting too see some actual buds by now but being my first plant I’m not sure if I’m just being impatient. She’s defo trying but doesn’t seem to develop flower she just keeps growing 😂😂😂. Could my light not be powerful enough? I’m using a vipraspectra 300

The plant looks happy and healthy, it just wants to take its time. It feels like an eternity on your first plant but she will get there.

That looks like a nice healthy plant and not far off being ready to rock.

I have grown a few Northern Lights auto's, and they tend to take their time flowering. I'd say your plant whilst being an auto is basically content to bulk up before it feels the need to push on into flowering. It will go when it's ready and to me, it looks about ready to make that switch itself. I wouldn't go stressing it, just let it do its thing.

I have seen all kinds of claims on Northern Lights flowering times etc. They just go when they are ready and take a while in flower as well. It will be worth it in the end as they can put on a fair bit of mass during flower. They just take their sweet time to do so.

Here are a few pics of RQS Northern Lights autos I grew a while back. Two plants took up most of a 4x4 tent with just enough room for two other young ones in the back of the tent. There is a little burn you can see on the bud pic. But I push them kind of hard once they start putting on any mass.

@turbotitch That coco / soil mix was getting really good over time. There were mushrooms fruiting in there not long before these pics were taken. In one of the pics it looks like brown paint was sprayed/airbrushed on the inside of the pot. That's where they came up and dumped a load of spores.

With NL generally being healthy and in no panic to flower. It means you can train them pretty hard as well because they have time to heal and get over the stress. So I do a lot of twisting and bending to train them out almost like they should be in a scrog, but without the net or nets.

I wouldn't go trying to train it much not since it's likely to flower soon. And my plants look like that after bending a few stems every few days during the entire veg.

You could use some wire or the like to just open up your canopy. Maybe gently bend over the main stem, so it's more even with the rest. But arsh bending, twisting or snapping them. Just enough, so you feel it actually resisting and that's plenty.

Also  look at the base of your plant and take out any tiny branches or the like which will never catch up with the rest or amount to much. Basically clean up any scraggly bits taking energy away from main branches or any decent side branches.

That way you will have a more open and even canopy. And you will have better airflow through the plant, as well and better light penetration down to those lower bud sites.

Great looking plant. Having a late bloomer is much better than having it flower early and ending up with a midget plant (sorry, I mean little plant) with little yield.

@basssman7 Exactly man the Jack autos I got from RQS were just like that.

They went into flower pretty much right away after they stuck their heads out of the ground. Out of four two just faded away and gave up the ghost. And the other two put together wouldn't make up one branch of the plants I posted pics of here.

@turbotitch Agree with Macky. You may as well get that rocking now esp since they are about to go into flower. If it's a big step up in power/light, then maybe just set your lights a little further away for the first few days. You can also lower it back down a bit each day until you find what works best.

@macky Aye may as well get it set up and rocking now. Just give a bit more distance between the lights and plant. Then drop it back down over a few days until you find what works best.

I don’t have any more height room but the marshydro does have a dimmer so I’ll just set that   down a bit so hopefully that works. Thanks all for the advice

@turbotitch I would bend those stems over with wire. Or crop them if you feel confident in not snapping any stems. Just press the stem between your finger and thumb. If you press you should feel it pop. Once it does it should flop over of its own accord. You want the tops flopping over away from the plant

@turbotitchAye I just noticed that while looking at the larger version of your pics.

What height is your plant BTW? If you are going to grow NL you will be doing a lot of bending and cropping lol. Pop some stems she will bounce back lol She can take it. It will slow down her stretch at the start of flower. If she hasn't already been doing that.

@herrodotus450bc it’s about 80cm, I’m not planning on growing NL all the time it’s the first seed I decided to grow, I have just popped another one though🙈🙈🙈, at least I know this time too top her and do more LST. How much should I pull it down?

@turbotitch Sorry was doing something there. Got a tape to check the height and get a better idea. I would nip the stems about 8-10" from the top. Just nip them between your finger and thumb until you feel it pop. Then gently bend it over in the direction you want it to go. You can give it a little twist as well while you bend it over.

If you can use wire or twine to tie them down. The just tie them back so the top 8-10" are bent out away from the core of the plant. Also try to keep the top as even as you can. The main will prob be the hardest to get sorted.

Don't be afraid of doing it. If a plant is a decent size and healthy it can take a fair bit of bending and twisting. Just go lightly are first and see how that  works. Then you can always go over it again, rather than insisting each branch most pop and bend right away. Just use some common sense and don't just charge at it like a bull in a China shop ya know  lol

@herrodotus450bc morning man I needed my beauty sleep lols. I will get an exact measurement for you and will approach with a bit of care and caution. Not gunna lie I’m proper nervous but it took the first lot of bending pretty well but I didn’t pop anything I just bent the stem an tied it down. I’ll post some pics once I’ve given it ago.

@herrodotus450bc so this is what I’ve done🙈🙈🙈🙈. My heart was pounding whilst doin it but I didn’t snap any, one split a lil. I think I should/could have gone a bit lower on the main stem but you live and learn. I’m unsure what to do with the few lil bits sticking up.

@turbotitch Looking good man.

I would just bend those smaller side branches as well. The will all start growing vertically again in no time. Keep us updated on how she does over the next few days.

You should see those small inner leaves swell in size pretty quickly.

@herrodotus450bc things are looking all good she’s recovered absolutely fine pretty amazing really. I’ve turned the dimmer up to 100% to try and help things along. Hopefully in the next week or so I’ll have some flowers.

@turbotitch Aye man. It only takes them a few days to get over it and start climbing towards the light again. Just picture a level line across the top, and if any start reaching past that nip them again. One later in the week or over Christmas. That should do them because she can't be far off flowering now.

@herrodotus450bc tbh it was looking pretty good after a few hours I was suprised how quick it sorted itself out. Hopefully I will get a few buds soon and the stretch slows because I think I’m already going to have to crop it again. Will this have any effect on the final yield being, cropping so close to flower?

@turbotitch You can crop them up to the first week of flower, and it won't bother them at all. Right now it's more about getting a nice even canopy and opening up the plant for better air flow and light pen.

If anything you get a larger yield by cropping before flower for the same reasons. You may not get the massive main buds you see on some grows. But then you will have more decent sized buds and far less risk of any bud rot etc.

Did you clean any scraggly bits around the base of the plant? If not then I would do it now. Anything down there isn't going to get much light or catch up in time. So you're as well just removing them entirely. Clean the bottom say 6" and remove any tiny twiggy branches. You'll likely find at least a few little ones hiding out down around the base. They won't amount to anything and only take energy away from the top 2/3's of the plant.

Once she is in flower proper you just need to look for any large leaves blocking light from bud sites. If they can be moved out of the way great, but if not then just remove them. As the stretch comes to an end and the plant is now more open to light. All those smaller leaves and going to be triggered into taking advantage of this new light.

The main thing is you have a good healthy plant. So you are already ahead of the game. If you can keep that up over a few grows you will be well sorted 👍
