Hi, I wanted to share some pictures of my Dutch Passion Durban Poison grow and ask some advise.

This is my first photo period grow. I am using two TGL-100 Cob LED lights, in a 2x4 tent, growing in coco/perlite mix, and fertigate about five times a day with my homemade automatic watering system using GHE flora series nutrients. I pretty much followed the methods of Dr MJ Coco of Cocoforcannabis when It came to preparing the coco and his way of stepping up the strength of the nutrients during the seedling stage, and so on.

I germinated on the 4th of June, (it was a happy day) just putting a seed in a moist Jiffy Pellet.

After it popped I placed the jiffy in a small nursery bag filled with coco/perlite.

On the 10th It looked like this.

20200610 littleOne

On the 19th of June I transplanted into a 1 gal smart pot.

20200619 transplTime

On the 27th I transplanted into a 3 gal Airpot, and on the 28th I topped it.

20200628 FirstTopping

Then during following weeks I proceeded creating my first mainline. I think next time I will super crop the two main stems, to lower the risk of a split in the middle.

20200706 Mainlining

I had only been hand watered twice a day, but now I put together a kind of “watering ring” using plastic hose and some 90° mini sprayers (It works kinda ok) and started tuning in the automatic fertigation system.

20200714 minisprayers

On the 13th of July I went from 18/6 lighting to 12/12.

After that and as the plant started to stretch I put up a scrog net and started to tie things down. This was my first time using a scrog, and I think it was of great help.

20200715 scrog

After a week of stretching I put up another scrog higher up.

20200722 NextScrog

The speed of growth of these plants are really quite amazing.

20200726 stretching

Tie down one day..

20200728 TieDown

And the plants “recover” the next day Smile

20200729 recover

Here is how it looked on the 13th of August. Lots and lots of leaves.

20200813 lotsOfLeaves

To mitigate rising humidity and heat (heat generated by my dehumidifier) I took to the scissors, and did some strategic defoliation. The heat might have been a bigger problem than I thought at the time.

20200823 defoliation

I had been feeding nutrients at EC 1.0, but noticed that the leaves where pretty dark and the tips got burned so I lowered EC to about 0.8.

The following two picture was taken on the 27th of August.

20200827 burned tips
20200827 flower

Here is one from the September 2nd

20200902 flower

I noticed pistils started turning red at around the 27th of August. Probably started earlier than that though.

Tricomes are.. well not easy to judge. Mostly clear I would say, but some milky and some amber and a few very dark.

My plan is to do a flush with florakleen and switch nutrients to GHE Ripen for the last 10 days or so (as per the instructions from GHE)

Thing is.. I am not sure about how long I have left before its time to to that switch?

Of course it is a matter of personal taste when it comes to how much amber one might like and so on, but as this is my first photo period plant I wouldn't mind some input from more experienced growers Smile

EDIT: Just as I was finishing this text I decided to cut a few samples of three different buds and try to take some pictures close up of the trichomes with my (cheap) usb microscope and I found what looks like bananas?

20200905 sample 1
20200905 sample2 and 3
20200903 bud
20200903 bud2

I have been struggling with fairly high temperature, when lights on measuring about 27-29 degrees in the middle of the canopy. During the dark period the temperature is around 22-25. Humidity 49%-60% thru both night and day.

Please take a look at the pictures and let me know what you think, and if it will be a problem for me? I only have this plant so I am not afraid of spreading pollen to other plants, but what about self pollination?

I think these are ready enough for harvest mate. Great post BTW!

Can you get a pic of the trichomes on the buds rather than the calyxes though? Thats a better place to get a good idea of maturity

Sorry I don't quite understand , what do you mean "..on the bud rather than the calexes?" , I thought the calyxes WAS the bud, sort of? Or rather that the bud was flower 😛 , (English is however not my native language Smile

Edit: To clarify, the samples are taken from the calyxes of three different flowers.

At least, I think 😛 I managed to take the samples from the calyxes, rather than from sugerleafs.

I took another larger sample and took some more photos, however it's difficult to get good images.

Overview of the sample taken, front and back:

Then some closeup images:

The trichomes look clear and remind me of a mushroom, you want 60-70% of them to start to lean over and turn light brown to get more of a knock out stone, when there clear its not going to be very strong at all,

even for a good high, you need to see 40 -50% turning brown.

Even going on the pistils, you want to see 70% of them going red/brown because most the weight is put on in the last 2-3 weeks in flower.

@jacks_farm Thank you for the reply. From what I can see some trichomes are turnig brown but most are clear. Looking at my closeup pictures do you think I would have more than 2 weeks left? (trying to decide when to switch to use Ripen) My reservoir is almost empty now, and I am leaning towards doing the switch now.

I would give the plants 2 weeks more.

Often my plants have a few nana's would not worry about it.

Worse  case you get a few free seeds and you can watch you mate shit it when it pops in a joint, it's all good fun lol

if you find any, keep the darker, well developed seeds.

So many things can cause the plants stress and cause then to throw out a few nana's, the list is end less

The only thing I would watch out for is bud rot, dont want smoke any of that.

Soft buds with a white mold in the centre,

Turns brown later

buds get soft and leaves  turn brown.

If you see any bud rot, harvest all the plants.

@jacks_farm Sounds good, thanks mate. Smile

I did a floorakleen-flush this morning, and switched out the nutrienmix to the Ripen mix. And if all goes well I plan to harwest in two weeks or so. Beg

I thought the calyxes WAS the bud

Yes mate, sort of 😉 The calyx you have taken is what grow under the main buds, try getting a shot of the trichomes on top of the buds, the bit thats closest to the light Smile

Your English is fine too, dont worry about it.

Do you have any idea what caused the Hermie? I Think you might be a bit too late now mate and you will already have seedy buds....If they aint finished yet, then I would let them finish and try to remove as many nanas as possible 🙁

Unlucky mate, the mission is to find the cause of the hermie to make sure it doesnt happen next time, most likely a light leak

@macky Thanks for the reply. The samples are taken pretty close from the top of the bud. Do you think the herm is more likely due to a light leak or to heat stress?

Well.. it turned out to be quite a banana party! lol LoL

I have bananas all over the place and also I have found a couple of seeds already. Trichomes are still mostly clear, so I believe there might be at least a couple of weeks until harvest.

I actually found a potential light problem. There is a small diod on the exhaustfan (that hangs in the tent ceiling) that I have covered with a piece of tape, but it didn't cover it properly so there was a vague light coming from that diod. So that combined with the high heat (29 degrees Celsius) might be the cause of the herm.

Good thing is that I have learned a ton from the experience Smile

Already thinking about the next grow.. how to improve.

Cheers!

I would chop now !!

sorry mate the buds with the dried leaves look like bud rot, pull the leaves out and if they slide out easy, open the bud up and look for a white or gray mold

if there is, dont smoke any of that bud, bin it, it's very bad for your lungs

@jacks_farm @Wenglish , thanks for your comments 🙂

I will chop today, and yes I suspect bud rot, but I hope I can salvage some bud. The plant hermied some weeks ago, therefore seeds.. not intentional 😒

I will let you know later how it went.

Both those dried buds had bud rot, and also one of the other largest buds had rot. Tossed them all into the fire... (did not inhale any smoke)

Other than that the rest was ok. Lots of seeds though. Silly

Hi again folks!

I struggle a little to write this.. as I am enjoying the fruit of my labor Bongin , but here is the final chapter of my Durban Poison grow.

Earlier this week, Wednesday evening, I listened to the episode on drying and curing whist finishing up trimming of the stems from my now dried harvest, to put it in jars. I went over every bud very carefully looking for bud rot, and unfortunately I did find some in the center of  two buds. I tossed anything I was suspicious of. As I mentioned before I had to toss three of the largest buds as they had succumbed to bud rot. In the end however I was left with about 275 grams of bud, and that is actually the most I have ever gotten from one plant Smile , but then again it's my first photo-plant. I believe I did dry a couple of days too long. It was like if the episode had come out a week earlier I might have done it differently but maybe not, hehe.

I forgot to mention something earlier, and that is that this plant hardly smelled anything ever. I ran without carbon filter, and still no noticeable smell in the basement. Pretty much every other cultivar I have grown have produced that nice happy smell not only in the basement but also sometimes up into the house. It did smell some in the tent but that was all. During drying no smell to talk about. However now that it is curing in jars it smells about the same amount as my other jars when I open them. And when I grind the bud It smells great Grin .

I hadn't smoked any since Sunday when I tried vaping some flower yesterday (Thursday) evening. The taste wasn't to pronounced, I remember trying to really identify the taste and the only thing I could think was about right was taste of how some type of soap might smell  Silly

I vaped about the same amount as I usually do, however I usually need to take a refill after a while. Not this time. I usually don't get too confused from cannabis anymore, but this strain really did/do twist my mind some extra. I tried to listen to my wife telling me about our baby goats (thats right, I've got goats Fist Bump ) that did something funny, but it felt really difficult for me to have that conversation, and it felt like it took forever... however, my wife do take her time when telling a story so that might have been real LoL

The effect was strong and nice, felt good, lasted long and it made the world much more colorful and focused (as cannabis usually do for me, just more or less, and this was alot more). However I did get somewhat more confused than usually, and at one point when I felt in the body like I was almost rushing thru space, or swinging in some kind of large swing, I did get a tad nauseous. I sometime get that feeling when I take to strong a dose of cannabis oil, or smoke to much.

The main reason for trying to grow Durban Poison was however to hopefully get less of the munchies. Some strains just makes me want to taste everything in sight directly after smoking it. Initially I felt no desire, but after getting nauseous I ate something to alleviate the sensation and that awoken the hunger. However it wasn't the worst.

Today I vaped a little less than half the dose I vaped yesterday and I have been able to function quite good whilst still feeling great.

Another thing I like to add to the topic of drying curing is that I use humidity packs, and I have used them as long as I have been curing cannabis. The ones I use are called Integra 62%. I have some jars from over a year ago with White widow and Kali Mist that still are good to smoke. I have never felt that the humidity packs do any harm, or effect taste. BUT I am a rookie, so I might just not know better Razz

I have however had one jar without humidity pack, as I was out of them during jarring up a harvest this spring, of some Critical Kush. The smell in the non-humidity jar started to smell like hay after a while. After getting some more packs, and putting it in that jar It recovered and lost that hay-smell.

Ok, now I believe it is time for another trip down to the basement... for a refill.

A few last reflections about this grow.

I never was able to dial in the climate good enough. Large swings in temperature between dark and light period. also struggled to keep humidity down without raising the temp to much. (The more I pushed my dehumidifier to lower humid, the more heat it produces). Also fertigating 5 times probably raised the humidity even more.

For the next time I am putting in a larger exhaust fan, and I will change out my homemade sprinkler-watering thingy to real watering halos, like those from bloom brothers. And I will lower fertigation rate. Also growing during winter instead of during the summer is preferable to me when it comes to humidity.

Anyways, about those pictures I promised!

Unfortunately I never did take any pictures during the actual harvest, I felt a bit like "why bother, this is probably crap anyway"... fortunately it wasn't, but I do believe I know what people really are most interested to see, so here is a picture of a little frog that has moved into my basement Smile

20201010 frog

And also, a picture of one of my baby goats (about 3-4 month old)

20200916 goat

And for the heck of it, here are the seven jars of joy:

20201010 7jarsOfJoy

And finally a close up of a jar:

20201010 CloseUpJar

That's it for now.. Grin

Cheers

@woolieback Happy to hear that, I felt the same, but I followed a pretty good guide over at Coco For Cannabis, and also studied the one by nug-bucket. I learned a ton by doing it. Especially learned how much I didn't know about the plant LoL .
