This is my second grow. The first time I germinated my seeds with only the paper towel method, no soaking, and they sprouted well. I had a successful grow.
This time I soaked my seeds first for about 20 hours but they never sank. I've read where this means the seed is probably dead. I went ahead and soaked them in the paper towels anyway. They shot out tap roots in a couple of days and I planted them. From glass to dycot was exactly a week, though small.
My questions are. Given that the seeds never sank should I trust their viability? If a seed has a rough start like this is it likely for it not to propagate well? I am certainly going to give it awhile but am I wasting my time? Do you give up if a seed doesn't sink?
@jeffrey sometimes mine do and sometimes they don't. I let them float for 10-12 hrs then poke them down, they may sink or they may not. But IMO don't give up on them until your SURE they're duds, a week or so. Everyone has their own opinion, and your paper towel worked, right. hope this helps, peace.
My seeds always sink but very frequently look like they didn’t because of surface tension of the water. I do the same, after some hours poke it and it sinks. Still wouldn’t give up on ones that might not sink and would probably go for the paper towel germination method so I could be certain there were OK. Once germinated vigor should be fine but if you notice something different let us know.

@jeffrey, so 24-36 hrs tops in the glass of water no more they'll drown. Then paper towel, kept moist, not soggy. If no signs of life after a week in the towel, throw in the towel. I do glass, 24-36 hrs, then paper towel with drops of water to moisten thoroughly, I slid mine in a plastic bag but don't seal it, just let it fall flat. I put that in a dark warm place, and check on it about every 8 hrs. I can hold up the bag to the light and see any root action. I try not to remove them until i see good root action, yes you can peek. Don't let them go too long the tap root can grow into the paper towel, I catch my tap root at about 1/2"-1.5cm. I place mine in a spilt Rapid rooter cause I'm in hydro. If NO root action after a week in the paper towel it's a dud. Hope this helps, happy growing.
