There is a lot of choice of different types of cannabis seeds for a new grower. You can choose from regular, feminised, and autoflowering strains. Each one of these different types of seed have different traits. These traits will be discussed in this post, so you can make an informed decision of what type of cannabis seed will suit your needs.
As well as seeds, you can grow cannabis plants from cuttings, or clones. You can also reveg a cannabis plant after harvest, and regrow it. There are many ways to grow cannabis, but it all begins from seed. So let's start at the beginning, with the original, regular seeds.
If you have any questions about cannabis seeds and what different types there are, then feel free to ask for help in our cannabis growers forum
In nature, when cannabis plants reproduce, there will be a male plant, and a female plant, that share genetics to make seeds. The male, will send pollen out into the air, which will make its way onto the pistils of a flowering female.
At this point, the female will begin to make seeds, for the next generation. These seeds will share genetics traits of the male plant, its father, and the female plant, its mother. These are usually random, and you can never be sure of what traits will come through to the next generation. But you can be sure that, 50% of the genes are from the mother, and 50% of the genes are from the father.
This gives the seed a 50/50 chance of being male or female.
Regular seed will stay in their vegetative stage of growth, as long as they receive more than around 18 hours of light a day. They will not begin to flower until they get around 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark a day.
12/12 is the light cycle used by growers to induce the flowering stage of regular cannabis plants. Plants from regular seeds, whether they are male or female, will not flower until they receive 12/12. It is also hard to distinguish the sex of a plant until it has gone into flower.
Because there is a 50/50 chance a plant being male or female when growing "regs", growers usually germinate twice as many plants as they need. After a few weeks these plants will be flowered, and checked to see what sex they are.
Unless these plants are intended for breeding, males will be removed, while the females, will be flowered. Sometimes, after the males are removed, the females are revegged. They will be grown for a little longer before being put back into flower.
For indoor growers, space and time is something that you don't have to waste. Also, if the whole crop turns out to be male, and you're not breeding, then weeks of energy bills have been wasted and you have to start again.
Because of this, regular seeds are used for either breeding, or finding a phenotype for a good mother plant. You can then take cuttings from her, and grow them.
With regular cannabis seeds, you can never be certain of sex, until the plants are flowered. You could get lucky, and pop six seeds, and get 6 females. On the other hand, you could get the opposite. So, to save time, most growers will choose feminised seeds for their grow.
Naturally, when cannabis plants make seeds, there will be a male, parent, and a female parent. That will give you regular seeds with a 50/50 chance of being male or female. Feminised cannabis seeds, have two parents just like any other plant, but, the difference is, both of the parents are female!
By treating a female cannabis plant with colloidal silver, you can make her grow male reproductive parts. The plant is still genetically female, but will grow pollen sacs, and release pollen.
If you use this pollen, from a female plant, and use it to pollinate another female, both parents have the female gene. As a result, the seeds that will be produced will only have female genetics, and there will be a 99% chance the seed is female.
Just like regular cannabis seeds, feminised seeds will veg under 18/6, and flower under 12/12. There are other light sequences you can use, but they can get complex and we will go into it in another article.
After vegging under 18/6 for around 4-5 weeks, a cannabis plant will reach maturity. This is when she is ready to be flowered.
Changing the light cycle to 12/12 will induce the plant into its flowering cycle, and bud sites will begin to form within a week to ten days. Though your seeds are feminized, and it is likely that the plants are female, look out for signs of male or hermaphrodite at this stage, just to be sure.
Feminised cannabis seeds are the go to seed for most growers. Regular seeds are great and can offer really strong genetics. But, for most growers, only females are wanted. And with feminised seeds, you don't need to waste space and time to find a female.
Feminised seeds made everything easier for the home grower. But you still need to take precautions in the early stages of flower to make sure the plants are female. There are a lot of seed banks out there, and some genes are better than others. Buy only from good seed banks and breeders!!
These two companies have all the different types of cannabis seeds you could ask for, from old skool classics, to brand new genetics!
Along with feminised seeds, there is another kind of cannabis plant that is very popular amongst indoor growers.
Regular and feminised, photoperiod seeds, will veg under 18/6, and will not begin to flower until they have 12 hours of daytime, and 12 hours of night time. They can be susceptible to light leaks, which can cause hermie, or revegging.
Auto flowering cannabis plants, are just that, they automatically flower. They can come in regular seeds, so you can get a male or female auto, but, unless a grower is breeding plants, autos will be bought feminised.
Autos will grow under pretty much any light cycle. Most growers will grow them on at least 18/6. And some will even grow them under 24 hours of light for their whole life cycle.
You can also use 12/12, but, because autos will flower under 18/6, you should give them that extra 6 hours of light. This will give them more light to turn into food, and then they will grow bigger! Hit autos with as much light as possible for best results.
Once germinated, an autoflowering cannabis plant has a set amount of time to finish its life cycle. Unlike a photoperiod plant, you can not extend the life cycle, by keeping it in veg for longer. You can not take cuttings either, once the seed is popped, you have a set amount of time to get things done.
Because you do not have time to waste, try no to put autos under too much stress, transplant once if you have to, before flowering, and top only once.
Keeping autos healthy and happy for their whole life cycle is key to good yields. Any stress at all will reduce growth, and affect overall final yield. This can be a downside to autos, and some growers will avoid growing them because of it. If you like to train and grow in a SCROG, then autos are not for you.
Autos can be great for perpetual growing! You can keep a plant late in flower, under the same light as a small vegging plant. You can add a new auto to your grow room every 2 weeks, and harvest one every 2 weeks. This can keep you with your own harvest permanently. Autos have made perpetual growing easier than ever.
Unless you're thinking about breeding cannabis plants, or have the space to find a good phenotype of a perfect mother plant, then feminised seeds are a must! They will remove the problem of removing males and wasting space in your grow room. There is a huge selection of seed banks to choose from all over the internet!
Whether you grow photoperiod feminised seeds, or auto flowering is your choice. Only you know what suits you best. Autos are easy, plant them, feed them, no need to change light cycles or timers.
Photoperiod plants will give you more veg time, and time to train and top your plants. You will get a better yield over all, but it may take more time to get to it.
Also, if you break a branch accidently, or have other stress issues with the plant, you can allow more time for the plant to recover. You don't have this privilege with autos.
Autos will have 18/6 at least throughout their life cycle. This is on average 12 weeks. A photoperiod plant will have around 4-5 weeks on 18/6, and then move onto 12/12 for anything from 8-14 weeks. Sometimes it can be more cost effective to grow autos, sometimes its better to grow photoperiod plants. You have to make the decision, what ever you choose, we can help you through the grow, and get you to the best harvest!
With all the different types of cannabis seeds, take your time to make the right decision. Your grow will take at least 12 weeks, make sure you spend that time growing something you want! Do some research and find out what strain is perfect for you. Then buy it as a feminised photo or auto.
Some growers like to grow autos as a side plant in their veg room. If you have 2 rooms, one for veg, and one for flower, you can start a crop of lets say, 4 autos, and 4 photos. Grow them under the same light in the same room until they get too big for the space they're in.
Then, move the photoperiod plants over to the flowering room, and leave the autos in the veg tent until they finish. They should finish a few weeks sooner than the photo plants, and when they do, you can pop 8 more seeds to prepare for the next crop when the photos in the flowering room are harvested. But more on that in perpetual growing!
