This is an IMPORTANT update on HLV of which we all should be aware. (Admin: please consider pinning this)
I had the day off yesterday so I was working in my outside garden and happened to catch a live stream by Future Cannabis Project with Dr. Zamir Punja of Simon Frasier University, followed by a panel discussion. I HIGHLY recommend you check youtube and listen to the stream. The title is "Four Methods of Spread of Hop Latent Viroid." Although it was targeted at industry growers, it has huge implications for home growers.
Since I was working in the field, I wasn't taking notes, although I wish I had. Cutting-edge and new research shows some very important issues that affect all of us. What is below is a summary (from memory, not notes since I was working in the garden) from both Dr. Punja's presentation AND the panel discussion that appeared in a separate stream that followed:
Background: Hop Latent Viroid is not a virus, but rather single-stranded, infectious RNA so it is EXTREMELY small, and infectious to several plants.
Presentation Takeaways:
- The viroid can reduce production down to 40%; it also reduces cannabinoids and terpenes significantly.
- Infected plants contain viroid at differing levels on the plant, with lower on the plant being higher concentrations (not new research), especially the roots.
- It appears to favor the floem, but can be shed through the roots.
- It is easily spread through clones (not new research).
- IT IS EASILY transmitted through water so there are huge implications for hydro growers.
- Anecdotally, it appears to be less transmittable through soil, but more research is needed.
- The viroid is actually STABILIZED in alcohol, so that is useless for sterilizing tools.
- The viroid is heat resistant, so it has survived a propane torch for 6 seconds.
- Bleach appears to be most effective for killing the viroid at a rate of 20% for 30 seconds, so this is a good way to sterilize, but this concentration will kill plants and seeds. It will also oxidize tools.
- The viroid in infected plants is present in the flowers and pollen.
- IT IS SPEAD THROUGH SEED where it is transmitted from the parent to both the seed casing and interior, with an infection rate of apx. 40%.
- Conditions of sharing biological material across grows and across borders is extremely favorable for high rates of transmission.
Fasten your seatbelts everyone. This could be a very bumpy ride.

@im_sparky Damn!! That sounds like some scary shit bro! How the fuck do we treat it when it is resistant to all that shit.....

That's scary, it's not something I know a lot about. How wide spread is it and how would you know if you had it ? There don't seem much of a cure apart from ripping it out deep cleaning with bleach j fluid and start again?
So HLV is like the Borg “Resistance is futile”

@macky right now, there is no way to treat it except to cull every infected plant. Tissue culture can grow out an uninflected plant, or a plant that has a minor infection (but there are no guarantee), but this is very expensive, even at the industrial level.

@hashimoto yep, as you said, that is the best way for a home grower, except to first NOT get it.
HLV is also known as dudding disease, because an infected plant will grow, but remain very small and puny — maybe 40-50% the size of a healthy plant. So, comparison is a good indicator for a home grower. Lab testing can confirm, but again, not sure this is really cost-effective for a home grower.

@backblast rule #1 for not becoming assimilated into the Borg Collective is to never have contact with the borg.

If the seed thing is now sure, thats bad news. How much of that 40% is from interior? And how long rna survives in dry seed shell 🤔
And how does it smoke? XD i think i've never smoked it.

@im_sparky sun growers have got rid of dudding long time but it takes work.

Dark heart sent it all across america in thousands of cuttings for quite awhile. Cookies etc big companies. Its in europe too. That's scary, it's not something I know a lot about.
