Hey there, I am considering setting up a tent for my first indoor try. It isn't practical for me to do it inside the house, so I am considering one in the garage. I live in the high desert with very low humidity and high heat. I don't think I can manage the heat in the summer so am going to try it in the winter months. My garage will regularly get down in the 50's F and might touch the 40's on rare occasions. Hi temps will be in the 60's during the day. Humidity will be single digit unless we get a rain or snow shower. So, several questions. First, is this simply outside the temp and humidity range a tent setup can handle and if not, what is the best method to heat and add humidity to the tent? I am willing to make the investment in good equipment if it's practical but don't want to waste my $$ if not.
Also, are carbon filters effective enough that I can vent to the attic with decent odor control?
TY in advance
what is the best method to heat and add humidity to the tent?
Using an oil radiator is good for heating the tent mate, and a humidifier for adding moisture to the air to raise room humidity, easy to do a reasonably cheap
Also, are carbon filters effective enough that I can vent to the attic with decent odor control?
Yes they will remove odour well enough, but the humid air from the grow tent will go into the attic and may cause mould over time. The attic will need some kind of window or something to let fresh air in.
@desertmk, Welcome to Percy's man glad your here. Yes to your questions, it should work in those conditions. You'll need an Oil heater-1200 watt max, controlled by an Inkbird temp controller that will also operate your exhaust fan. The fan size will be determined by the tent size. 1-2 humidifiers that are controlled by Inkbird humidistat, available from amazon-black ones for no light penetration. You may have to cover the outside of the tent to help insulate if needed, you'll have to play with it. Vent everything outside, this is very important!! If you don't then all that moist air will collect in the attic and cause mold that will ruin your house. It's doable I think, but it would be easier with a larger tent not some tiny thing. Hope this helps man, good luck.
Thanks Macky! How about adding a small humidifier directly to the tent. Bringing the room/garage humidity up isn't going to happen.
Good point on adding humidity and mold in the attic. Will have to think that through.
Basically, the goal would be to get a grow in and cure in the tent before the weather turns hot. Then take it down until fall.
@desertmk All good info above. Just to chime in for comparison, I have a small closet grow and I vent it to my attic after the air is scrubbed with a carbon filter. My attic is ventilated, and the exhaust goes to near an attic vent. I have lived in the desert before, but now I live in a very humid place, and I have no issues with mold in my attic with the venting described, and that is with a continuous grow and dry/cure for the last year.
I want second what @woodi2 said about an Inkbird. It is money well spent and makes environmental control so much easier. Also, on a humidifier, you can set them up multiple ways, but many people put one in their tent. Just be aware of a few things. Obviously they take up floor space and you do not want it blowing directly on plants, so you need to give them room. Secondly, I started off with an evaporative humidifier and it was a huge pain to deal with given my very hard water. The filter would stop wicking up moisture when it calcified and the RH would drop. I switched to an ultrasonic version and it is so much better. If you are in a desert area, let me suggest a large reservoir humidifier and top-fill for ease of use. Do you know about the hardness of your water? My water is very hard and an ultrasonic humidifier leaves a mineral residue if I use tap water. I switched to using the condensate out of my house's dehumidifier/AC and it works great. It is not distilled or RO water, but it is quite good. Lastly, to give you an idea of volume, my tiny grow is about .6 meter(yard) square with 9 1/2' ceiling, and I have a room humidifier that holds 1 gallon on a shelf. Right now, with young plants, I am at 77F and 77RH, and that 1 gallon humidifier will last about 3 days or so.
Hope that helps.

@im_sparky Thanks for the advice. We definitely have hard water here so great tip on the ultrasonic dehumidifier. I'll have to figure what to use for water, the AC deal won't work for me as I'm planning on doing this over the winter. I can just buy distilled but that would add up over the course of a grow. Hmm, in the due diligence stage right now.
Sorry to drift the thread but what did you water your plants with. Our tap water is high PH (Over 8.0) and really hard. It wasn't an issue outside, but I think in a pot it would be.
@desertmk, rain water works for watering as it is very soft and has an EC close to 0. It should work for the humidifier but I've never tried it, I use RO water because my well water is very hard, but I can use the well water to help PH the feed water. Good luck.

My tap water varies in hardness from 160-205ppm and hovers around 8.1 pH. Water hardness per se is not a problem in that it is largely due to calcium and magnesium, which are crucial to plants, so this means you need a lot less cal-mag. The problem is that the calcium increases your pH. If you simply use a good pH Down product, you can get it into range, and still have the Ca and Mg in solution. In my organic grows I use vinegar for pH down, and the buffering in the soil works great for me, even after doing to for 9 months. I've had grows where I used pH'd tap water the entire time (in soil), and had zero issues with it. Recently, I have been using condensate, and feeding my own Cal-Mag (made from oyster shells and epsom salts) and have started using a commercial pH Down as I get ready for a DWC experiment.
You know, if it were me, I would consider buying bottled RO or distilled water and maybe mixing it 50/50 with tap water in a reservoir and then pH it down. This way you get trace minerals and have to do less to adjust pH.

@im_sparky Thanks man, I had considered cutting the tap with distilled. Our ppm is in the 500 range! Water tastes good, must be why I have strong bones.
