Wasn't sure where to put this so put it in growing in soil my bad if it's wrong- IV started the process of making compost tea IV used a 25l bucket IV put 5 LTRs of water and 2 ltres of compost and IV been mixing it up every time I go past as I don't own a bubbler,I'll leave it to sit for 24hrs and then strain and filter it tomorrow,🤞 it does the job once I've diluted it with some pH water,
The separation has started an hour after its first spin 😉
After a big mess about I finally filter all the slop out of this and made 4ltrs of compost juice,I ph'ed it down and gave my plant it's first ever feed or what ever you Wana called it,hopefully it goes crazy for it as IV never fed it anything other then fish blood and bone so exciting times
@firetop95, once you've done it a couple times it gets easier. It doesn't have to be perfectly strained either it can be chunky they don't mind. I mix a gallon of compost and 1lb of worm castings and 2-3 Tbsp. molasses , along with 2gal/8L+ water, then mix shake or bubble. Dilute afterwards to 5 gallons.
There's new evidence that some believe a short mixing time is better that an overnight bubble, that the more dominate strains will take over with a long mix time but more variety of microbes with a shorter mix time, I would need a microscope to prove this though. So if your short on time try just shaking the shit out of a bucket for about 30 mins, I've tried it and the plants didn't die and pretty sure it had the same effect.
Good luck man, your on the right track. 👍
Thanks for the info @woodl I didn't persistently shake I shook it up through out the day/night,each time I went passed I gave it a 5/10min shake up I filtered it through some cloth an ended up with a 4ltr bottle full of juice I haven't added nothing to it as I don't have nothing yet still need to go shopping but when I do I'll grab some worm castings and some molasses, going out today so hopefully I find what I need 🤞👍👍
@woodi2 Yeah I was speaking to Soil Smiths about this the other day and they said they don't recommend compost teas as certain bacteria will dominate and reduce the diversity and Protoza. He was saying that they make compost extract that is easy to do and you just add compost to dechlorinated water and hit it with a drill mixer for 1 min then either apply with a jug straight away or put through a pond filter bag and into a watering can.
@yoshi, so it not recommended to brew compost tea overnight? but to do a quick mix and a immediate watering? That's what I heard from somewhere to, I shake it for 10 mins and then apply. But then I heard to use large amounts of compost, compared to smaller 1 cup for gallon? So I'm doing 1 cup per gallon compost, worm casting and 1-Tbsp molasses, then I stir and shake, then strain, now at this point some folks dilute the mix 1-1 water, PH the mix and apply. There's still a lot of holes in this recipe but it's better than straight water.
I haven't done a lot of investigation on this subject so that's why my plants look the way they do. My last grow was subjected to large amounts of compost brewed tea compared to the 1 cup version that I'm trying now. I think I over did it, but other folks say that can't happen but I think that's wrong.
I can't remember the exact ratio but I think I done something along the lines of 1 ltr compost to 3 ltrs of water I then mixed it all together and shook up each time I went passed or remembered about it as I don't own a bubbler, after a day/night of mixing/shaking up by hand I then filtered it so it was just liquid,I didn't bring the ph down it was in the 7s I didn't leave it to sit 24hrs ever so when it came to me using it it was to hot for the plant I was growing at the time it put it into some kind of shock and eventually killed it off next time round I'll add another ltr of water and make sure pH is at the rite balance and add a bubbler just to make life easier defo a learning curve
Keep it Poppin people
IV been looking into other ways of using my compost as I have a shit load of it that's been filled with veg scraps and cardboard tea bags and so on (green waste) for the last couple years, other then teas I wasn't sure how to bring it indoors as a soil with out bringing in bugs and unwanted other little beast and using it on my grow and my house plants,
IV been researching into how to get all the nasty things out and keep all the good in,some people recommend baking the compost at a low heat as all the good will be at micro levels and all the nasty will crawl out and away or die, also sive it so the nasty will be pulled out and other little things,I haven't gone with anything so far so I haven't put nothing to the test but soon as the weathers a little better I'm going to experiment see if any of it works out,
If any one has found a way to implement the compost soil into a grow with out any bugs and stuff please let me know
Keep it poppin
@woodi2 I wish I could post the link but Soil Smiths (uk website) are the ones that have been spreading the word about this method and I had a long discussion with one of their soil scientists over the phone about it before as they offer a service to analyse the biology of your soil and then work with you to get it to optimum numbers of bacteria/fungi/Protozoa.
The difference in this method is that they use inoculation grade compost which is super rich and diverse. I believe the way of doing this at home would be create your own compost pile but also use IMO and diverse inputs. They make and sell the stuff and tailor it for you based on your soil sample if you get one so you get more bacterial or fungal dominance.
Ecothrive have also started selling this compost in the UK but I believe the compost might actually be from SoilSmiths anyway as they both seem to work together.
The ratios they use is 1 part compost to 2 parts dechlorinated water then they spin it in a bucket with a paint mixer attachment on a drill for just 30 seconds.
@yoshi, I was just telling someone about an old paint shaker at the local lumber/timber store here in town that is sitting in the back and how handy that would be for this. lol
Yes I did try the 1-2 ratio and after that bad things happened but can't say what did it for sure. Then other folks are doing 1 cup pre gallon. Others say to dilute it and others don't. Some say to PH the mixture and others say Never PH? some of my mixtures are coming out at PH 4.30.
I need to do some more reading from reliable sources, I'll look into the Soil Smiths, Thanks. 🖐️
