@growdad completely agree with you. just when I do see thrips they look similar in shape and size. those are some fat looking fellas, and if it were springtails/fungus gnats typically there thin and long. I know the picture not quite in focus so it’s honestly really hard to tell and I am definitely not a bug expert.

@backblast I’m going to dry a soil drench and see what happens. It’s crazy i’ve been growing on and off for the last 20 years and never came across thrips. I’ve had fungus gnat problems. I’ve always used FFOF and never had an issue and as soon as I try a new local product, i’ve got issues.

@growdad, Sorry to hear you have unwanted guest and I feel the same way. And I know nothing about bugs and don't want to, that's why I thought I saw Big Foot in two of the pics. lol But @im_sparky was recommending this black tea treatment, below, but he was using it for foliage spray. I'm just glad it's not Big Foot. wow!! 😲 lol

Maybe something like this or he'll chime in. Good luck man, happy hunting!!

Sparky's Post

I think these guys are right — bugs, man.  If it were me, I’d make a strong black tea (as in kind you drink, and just a little stronger than what you’d drink), let it completely cool down, and spray all the leaves with it, including the underside.  Caffeine is an insecticide that is non-toxic to humans at the low levels at which we drink it. If you are concerned about the spray, you could test it first on a single leaf and give it 12-24 hours to see how the leaf reacts, but I’ve done this both indoors and outdoors and had great results. Bon chance!

@woodi2 thanks. I can give that a try. We drink lots of hot black tea in our house. I’ve been bug free for just about a year so yah my stomach dropped when I saw these guys crawling around…….I’m going to try and research this bug a bit more.  I’ve already shelved this soil and will go back to the FFOF for the time being.

@growdad You could add a bit of neem seed meal to the media to get rid of the pests. That's my plan if I ever go to the dark side.. away from my precious coco...

I used mosquito dunks before and worked ok I was in veg at the time. it's a bacillus of some sort but eats the larva is my understanding.. just dissolve some in water, pH and  add to soil, also had those sticky traps and pans of soapy water laying around plants but eventually they went away.

@growdad I just had this issue, suspected contaminated water from water butt.

What worked for me was beneficial nematodes, most common one I've seen in uk is nemasys.

Also now keep a mosquito dunk in my water sources.

No longer have an issue.

Hmmmm.... Keep in mind that some bugs are actually good for the soil. I am just not sure what you have. But if it were my grow and I thought they were bad, I'd start with the tea, then maybe go to the neem cake meal.  Good luck, and keep us posted, bro!

Som i’m guessing this is a thrip. I caught this sucker on my plant and enlarged the photo.  I do have a mosquito dunk sitting in water for 24 hours but I don’t know how effective that’s will be. I do have neem oil and thought about making a neem drench. I also may order a bottle of Dr Zymes and start using that as part of an IPM. I wanted to just trash these girls and restart but that’s going to cost me a month.
