So I live a stones throw from the Atlantic Ocean and have access to an unlimited amount of sea shells. Has anyone used sea shells in their grow?  I know a lot of nutrients come from the ocean.   I’m thinking about using the sea shells in the bottom of pot for draining with the Fox Farm Ocean Forest on top of that. I was also thinking about pulverizing sea shells and adding it to the soil.  Any thoughts?  I know i’d have to rinse the shells thoroughly or what that be washing away possible nutrients?

adding to the bottom of the pot would help with drainage.  Not sure what other benefits you may get from it though.  Calcium?

Something that I remember Marco talking about was to put some shells in the pot cup side up so when you water, these shells can hold a little extra water for the plant. I’m sure they won’t hold puddles because of all the capillary action but could possibly have benefits. I’ve not yet tried it but it did sound interesting.

This can definitely add minerals to your soil and can help with the drainage issue and water stores as mentioned above.  However, just be careful in that if you add much crushed shells to your medium, it can significantly shift pH since they are highly alkaline. You can do it, just don;t add a lot of crushed shells. Hope that helps.

@stootie thanks for posting @mitsos diary. He had a lot of good information there.

@monkeydo Yes I think I remember Marco talking about that. I actually may put the shell facing down so the water doesn’t puddle. Since I’ve been using the sand on top to deter the gnats, they’ve managed to find the holes in bottom of my pots.

@im_sparky yes, I agree too much in the soils will cause a complete shift.

With all that being said, I think I’m going to try it on one plant this go around as an experiment. I’ve got seedlings now that have just sprouted and one of them will be my science project

Thanks everyone!!
