I have related questions about multiple aspects of my set up, so thought this would be the best place to post.
I am blind and based in the UK, so I need a set up that I can easily assemble myself without any sighted assistance if possible.
this means as many plug and play things as possible, as my vision is not good enough for me to do wiring, and having to try and figure out complicated assembly things when you can’t see the instructions is not a fun task.
I thought I would start with a 60 x 60 cm tent, as if necessary I can always purchase another one, and I think it’s having completely separate tense will be good to help avoid contamination issues.
I’m pretty good about being clean and tidy, but figured it’s better to be safe.
also I want to start with something small that I can easily hide if necessary, as I don’t have power in cupboards or wardrobes so I can easily stash it in there.
I would rather spend more upfront and get a sturdy reliable tent that is easy to assemble.
Recommendations for this are much appreciated.
I also need to get fans, a filter, and a lighting set up that again is fairly self-explanatory too set up.
If I can easily adjust the fan speed and light intensity with physical mechanical controls, or a Phone app then that would be fantastic.

Again recommendations are much appreciated.
I was also planning to grow in soil, because there seems to be a more forgiving medium that requires less precise testing and monitoring.
If my assumption about this is wrong then please let me know.

I have an accessible thermometer but currently don’t have a device for monitoring humidity.

I’m going to search for something with a phone app which hopefully will be accessible, but again I’m open to any and all recommendations.
Finally when it comes to training the plants I thought I would buy some sort of device is commonly used for tomato plants and use that.

Again let me know if this is not a good idea.
I’m planning to start off with two plants in a small tent but not necessarily expecting both of them to survive.

If they do then that would be awesome.
Also I do have apps for monitoring light and light levels, but again I figured it might be best to go for auto flowering plants just in case I don’t notice a light leak.

Please let me know if I’ve forgotten anything or if you have recommendations for product I can buy that hopefully meet my requirements.

many thanks in advance.
This is going to be as much of a learning experience for us as it will be for you. I think if you want to begin with a 60 x 60 tent then go for one with something like a 160cm height. It’s much easier to grow in tents with higher clearance and the 120cm tent is more challenging to use sometimes. I know mars hydro makes one like that. For the extraction fan the AC Infinity Cloudline 4 inch fan is super quiet and has automatic controls that can be used to control the temperature automatically, one less thing for you to worry about. Any decent carbon filter will work. I like to use the ones with Australian activated charcoal. They seem to work well. I’m certain others will also have recommendations so consider everything before you decide anything.

Sohum super soil is excellent imo and will do a full auto cycle with ph’ed water only with some light potting soil around the seed to start it off in.
subscribing to this post and look forward to the diary. Good luck. 👊🏻

Hey mate, some great suggestions so far.
A 60x60 tent is a great place to start however may be a bit small if you want to have multiple plants. As @monkey mentioned a taller tent is better if you can find one, by the time you squeeze the fan/filter and a light up top it doesn't leave you with much height to work with if the plant takes off. My recommendation would be marshydro or spiderfarmer, both are decent quality and will be easy to set up.
As for the humidity/temp monitors, you can get inkbird wifi sensors that will connect to your internet and they pair with an app for your phone, you can track both wherever you have mobile signal from the app, you can also set alarms to warn you if the temps or humidity hit a predetermined value that you set.
You can also get wifi power plugs that you can set a timer on via an app on your phone for the lights/ feed pumps etc. You can also track your power usage and turn them on/off via the app.
Medium I would suggest soil, as you touched on it requires less input and in some cases will allow just water the entire grow. Things like coco and dwc are much more grower input intensive mediums and it can become alot of work quite quickly. Especially since you mentioned you suffer vision impairment so I think soil would be easier for you to manage.
It can be as simple as a red light on a fan or humidifier that can cause a reveg and or hermies with photo period plants, and even with 20/20 vision I have missed one of these lights and had a run herm on me, so if you don't feel confident identifying light leaks or potential light sources then autoflowers are an excellent option. A nice hardy strain with good genetics will make life easier for you also, consider something like white widow or northern lights, both are excellent strains and make life easy if things get out of whack.
Fans have been covered, you can't get much better than an a/c infinity and Australian charcoal filters, a 4 inch would be enough to filter a 60x60 no issues.
There are plenty of guides here on making your own soil, and quite a few members running varying brands of pre bagged soil, I run mainly coco and live in Australia so I wouldn't be able to recommend you anything on that front sorry.
You can also purchase little plastic clips designed for LST training, they are fairly inexpensive and can be purchased on Amazon or ebay. They are also really easy to use and prevents you needing to tie stuff down or mess around with garden wire.
Hopefully all that info helps, sorry it's a massive information dump but I figured it was easier as one post lol

I feel like a, like a slice of butter... melting on top of a big-ol' pile of flapjacks... yeah.
My main grow room is the shower. lol but I bought a 75 x 75 x 160cm bay6 tent for about £55 It's a nice inbetween size. Iv got 3 plants in it right now, which is far too much for the light iv got in there but I got carried away with the seed planting 😆

Thanks for the replies so far everyone.
Stealth is a factor for me, and also I don't have a lot of space to dedicate.
Would a 75X75 be a better size for two plants?
I don't need them to be huge, but I would like to at least have a backup for the first couple of times, then start growing different strains.
I assume a 300W LED would be ok for a 75X75 tent?
Also thanks for the recs re soils to get in UK, will check them out once I have my shopping list all ready.
Was actually planning to start with some northern lights, brings back great memories.
Best,
VapingDruid
@vapingdruid It will depend on the size of the plants and all that but I find the 75 x 75 is a nice size for 2 plants or maybe 3 at a push, it's only a 100w light iv got in there. I was never planning on having more than one plant in the tent but I ended up taking clones and planting too many seeds, but at least I know now that she can hold more than one.lol
I dont know a lot about light coverage but I would thought a 300w would be more than enough for a 75 x 75.
I also bought a small 90 x 90 x 60cm tent which Im using for drying weed at the moment, I have a plant hanging in it now, infact that was the reason I bought my first tent because I needed somewhere to dry my weed. you can never have too many tents.lol 🙂

300 watts is probably twice what a 60x60 would need but I think a warning of sorts is in order. When looking for lights look at the actual watts that the light draws from the circuit and not the manufacturer’s name. For example when I first started out I purchased some lights marketed as 600w lights. They were actually 108 watt lights but to increase the appeal they named them the 600w. Also wanted to mention for stealth a “quantum board” type light with no cooling fan is the quieter option that most new growers are starting with these days.

hi there, lots of great advice so far ..
just gonna throw another option in here i think worth considering for you...
a 2x4 tent which is 5 feet high.. the thinking being
- easier access to plants (side by side) for training and reaching the back of the tent
- possibly better stealth shape - more like a wardrobe shape so dont stand out so much - easy to throw a sheet or blanket over etc
- can fit several small or 2 or 3 medium sized plants
- 240w ish of led will do u nicely for yields of similar number even for beginners (i use a migro 240 in mine which fits perfect)
- if u decide u want a little more floor space u can put it on its side to make a 2x5 which is 4 feet high (short plants only!)
AC infinity do superb climate controlled fan/ filter kits or u can get a basic kit for much less to start off (something for every budget!)
Sohum soil is the easiest (and priciest) to use, is more readily available now in uk (u wont need to add any feeds so u save money there)
Ecothrive is a better soil if you're going to reuse and reamend your soil imo
The tomato type supports can be very useful and simple to use .. i use a variation from B&Q .. a stand with a ring support that attaches - this acts like a mini-scrogg (screen of green - a term growers use to describe a desirable flat trained canopy which helps deliver best case yields...)
I guess simplicity is the key to get started so thats my advice .. keep it simple .. soil, seeds, light, - all the best quality u can get, a good air exchange, then its about getting the watering side right .. just like any other plant
happy growing and hope u enjoy the percys community here
