Hi, I’m new to this site and I’m not sure I’m posting in the correct place but I am seeking advice from anyone that has had to wash their outdoor buds. I have a small backyard grow about 20 plants with really nice bud that’s about a week out. Well some bad fires are happening and my buds got covered in ash and debris. I have blown off what I could but I’m thinking about doing the wash at harvest but I’m worried about trying to dry a lot of wet buds and the possibility of mold. But I have to try something. Anyone have any experience with this?

@countryoma welcome to Percy’s mate. Sorry to hear about your grow, hope you can save it. I have family up in fire county, I know what you are going through. We have a few members that wash buds or have done a lot of research into bud washing. @Colacody is the guy you need to speak with imo. He has an outdoor grow in progress and has tested bud washing in prep for his chop day. He will see this tag and be by shortly. In the mean time make yourself home and have a look around. Stop by chat and say hello if you get a chance.

@countryoma Welcome to Percys mate, sorry to see all the shit thats going on for you guys right now! Alot of grows have been lost because of these fires.

I would definelty recommend washing the buds. Hopefully that will do something to fix it. But i have heard that smoke damage will make the weed taste like smoke. I hope your plants aint too badly effected

@countryoma hey there! I havent had to wash my buds because of this ever but I do wash my buds every harvest for my outdoors and so far....indoor too lol. As for the ash and smoke issues your having out there right now, I'm not sure how it would react BUT I do know that the resin will not be affected by water. If you want to try something out you can get a plant sprayer off the internet or maybe you have one and try to wash the buds in the morning before the sun comes up....this will help rinse anything off. Also....you can use 3%hydrogen peroxide in water. I've mixed up to 1.5L of 3% hydrogen peroxide into 5.5L of water. You can spray the buds down with this and see if it helps to wash the buds down of the ash and stuff. Also...MAKE SURE your plants are supported for the weight of the water....adds quite a bit of weight and you can break branches. Also you can just use regular hose water on a light shower setting and rinse them off well....it seems odd at first but if you think about it.....they were in the wild for 1000s of year in the rain and doing just fine. I just harvested indoors and washed them very thoroughly under tap water and a peroxide solution and this is the final product here.

The key to washing is air flow when harvesting but outdoor make sure the sun slowly comes up to dry them....I.e washing them early to air dry and by the time the sun is out it wont burn them through the droplets of water. I hope this helps and please do post some pics up of your crop and how things have worked for you so others in your position can be helped and we can all learn. I feel for you tho and hope we can get you to a good harvest and save your crop! Any questions feel free to ask! And welcome to Percy's! 🙂

Thanks for the response guys. Appreciate it. After watching a dozen videos last night I think I am going to try washing using the 3-bucket wash/rinse with lemon and baking soda. This will be my first time ever getting my buds wet. When the latest fire started five days ago it came with crazy winds that blew all the ash and debris into the plants. They were covered. I live about eight miles from the fires currently burning. We still have smoke today but but for now the ash has stopped. So in about a week I’ll start to harvest/wash. Working this weekend to set up a drying tent so I can hopefully control the humidity as it drys as well as keep the smell down somewhat.
I will keep you guys posted as I go into uncharted territory lol!

@countryoma ya as macky mentioned they get rained on....they are EVEN better tasting once they've been washed....definitely try it again o  your next harvest too....brings the smells out BIG time. The 3 bucket method is also very good. I know it feels weird but remember that the plant is essentially FULL of water growing AND it rains on them aswell....they are more than equipped to deal with the water I promise. The biggest thing to watch is that the buds dont touch the sides of the container....that's the only big thing to watch for when your washing as long as the mixtures are good. Keep us updated! 🙂
