@jacks_farm If memory serves , 25mm of sharp dry kiln sand on top of the soil stops any bugs popping up , I may be wrong or quoting but deffo remember doing it 2 decades ago 🤣

Nothing wrong with your memory, lol...it needs to be sharp sand though, building sand is no good Smile

Oh the shop only had building sand   Unamused

know it has some lime, is the sand bad for the roots

@jacks_farm Different grain shape, doesn't shred the larvae on their way up 😉

Plus it retains moisture too much

Is there more of a chance with bugs if I use soil over coco?

No! Unless you're getting your soil from a really shitty source, or not being clean when you come in from outside, bugs are no more of an issue in supersoil compared to any other medium, if done properly. You might have some good bugs like springtails built in, and the microbes are the reason that supersoil really works - when everything is in check and balance, there are no problems. I've been growing in soil for almost a decade now and I've only ever had issues with insects when I was the idiot who brought them in. They're aren't inherently built into the soil like ppl seem to think... 😉

And for water, distilled is good in the very very early stages but, not so much for normal irrigation (and it's expensive!). As long as your tap water is relatively low in dissolved solids (less than 250ppm), that should be okay. Do watch the pH as well though - my water here in Saskatoon, for example, is very very alkaline (pH ~8.2) so I have to treat it with a bit of pH Down to ensure the plants can properly take up the nutrients.

Also, I use 3 gallon (11L) pots with zero issue. Veg for 5-6 weeks, flower for 8-9.

so after much research and discussion i finally got myself down to the nearest shop which is like 70 miles and the only organic soil they had was like £60 i looked online snd it was so much cheaper online. i got some advive from my friend who thinks coco is easier so i guess after all the talk of soil ive had to go with coco! thanks so much for the advice guys
