I've just no idea...another day or two, another week or two?Β  This is my first harvest and I'm having trouble timing the flush.Β  I've got a number of plants, only one seems to have an amber trichome creeping up now and again, the others seem to be in such different stages that it looks like I won't be harvesting all at once...so also, is that normal?Β  For plants having been planted and raised together?

Hey @jehosaphet welcome to Percy's, what medium are you growing in? What week are you on, and what is the breeders suggestion on flowering time? Can you post some pics of the plants and the trichomes if you have a scope? that will help us help you. Even the same strains grown in the same medium, yada, yada.. will have different Phenotypes, just like kids will be different from one another. Hope this helps man. πŸ–οΈ

@woodi2 Boy I bet that question gets asked a lot, huh?Β  Thanks a lot here, I'm having the hardest time lining up the jeweler's loop with my camera lens and having it all come together in a focused picture of trichomes, but I'll have pictures to follow here as soon as I figure out where I can host them (I haven't posted pics in a looong time).

But I believe I'm just into week five.Β  Now that I think about it, I'm not sure I've even timed it right, but the first hairs appeared on the 25th of last month so that's what I've been going by.Β Β

I don't have a breeder to ask, I got these from a friend who had seeds in his stash, but I've only seen the occasional amber trichomes and only on certain leaves, not yet throughout any specific plant.Β  But I'll give another shot to taking a picture tomorrow and report back, thanks a lot!

@woodi2 Oh and to answer your question, I'm growing in soil.Β  I've done a little with micronutrient stuff, but have just been sticking with general hydroponics fertilizer into the flowering stage here.Β  I'm also growing outside in a greenhouse in the Pacific Northwest.Β  And they are the same strain plant, germinated from seed, so yeah just expected them to mature at the same pace...there's really no variables between them that I can think of, but your answer is noted, and it did help, thanks for taking the time.

@jehosaphet, I hear ya man, those loupes can be a pain as far as a camera goes. If someone doesn't have a loupe I ask them about the hairs. Usually, first the hairs will be straight, then they turn red, orange and then they crinkle in against the bud, they won't be straight anymore. Now even at the end before harvest she will still throw out some new hairs here and there, but the majority of the hairs will be crinkled and done, you can tell when you see it. The plant will mature from the top down so check the top, middle and bottom of the plant.Β

Β I have a usb Microscope that work great for $29 US, on amazon. If you can post pics for just the buds/plant that will help. Good luck man, from the mid-west. πŸ–οΈ Β

hey man, when using the loupes as mentioned above, make sure that you are only making decisions from trichomes that are actually in focus, without gettin into too much detail, out of focus clear trichomes can be colored by refracted light from orange pistils nearby and appear orange but are not. Also, I have noticed that if I have to look hard for signs of being ready for harvest, I am still weeks away. I still check everyday though cause I cant help myself.

@jehosaphet I may be wrong but if you're only 5wk in flower then your lady isn't ready. What I think you have done is seen the pistils (white hairs that turn brown) not the trichs. Concentrate your loop on actual bud and use your eyes and loop not the cam and loop. You will see them change from clear to cloudy and then Amber. If you want a sativa high harvest when cloudy or if you want couch lock leave it until they turn amber

@jehosaphet Trying to take pictures of the trichomes is one of the biggest problems iv had since I started growing. Iv bought usb microscope, one that clips on my phone, hand held ones but I could never get any good pics through them.

Now I just check if the plants are ready by using my jewellers loupe and I dont bother trying to take a close up photo of them anymore. I do still zoom in with my phone and take pics but it never shows amber trichomes even if you do get a good close clear pic, they always come out white in the photo.

What I do when checking the thics is I hold the bud in one hand and have the loupe in the other, you can extend your fingers on the bud hand and rest your other hand against them to steady things up a bit too. But sometimes I find it easier if I just hold the loupe about an inch away from the bud and move my head out and in to adjust the focus instead of moving my hand, it sounds a bit retarded but it does help sometimes.lol

Β

Like Dan said week 5 will be a bit early, I always think of week 8 as being time to get the loupe out but it's usually nearer week 9-10 before they're ready, depending on how much amber you want.

You also have to watch and make sure it's not just the sugar leaves your seeing in the loupe because they turn amber a few weeks before the trichomes on the actual bud do (the Calyxes or something like that is the name of it).

A lot of folk have top level pics using the usb microscopes but I couldn't get my one to work on my phone so I just gave up then 🀣 All the personal info gets removed from any photos that are uploaded here too so it's all totally safe πŸ™‚Β
