@janecekd hi there, welcome to percys Smile

Usually it is the excess chlorophyl that causes a harsh hit, ideally you want to slow the dry period down so that it takes 10-14 days to dry and then give a good 2 week cure burping your jars/buckets and the smoke should be smooth as butter :). Also, and this is a preference it makes little difference if you do this or not but a good flush over a few days at the end of the grow before harvest can help clear out any excess nutrients hanging around, this has not been scientifically proven like the dry and cure has but I find can help a touch if growing with heavy feed schedules.

I feel like a, like a slice of butter... melting on top of a big-ol' pile of flapjacks... yeah.

@janecekd Properly drying a curing will make the smoke smoother. Its usually because of the sugars and starches in the plant matter that makes it harsh, those get broken down as the shit dries and cures. So the better refined that process is, the soother you smoke will be Smile

Some nutrients used mid to late flower have been suggested as culprits. One that comes to mind is kelp. Some growers insist that it makes buds harsh if used late. There probably others too.

Letting your plants fade late in the grow seems to help for me too. Let that plant suck that goodness from the leaves and eliminate some chlorophyll before the chop too.

Some strains are might just make you cough more too. Northern Lights gets me every time no matter how I grow it so that’s my stay away strain (but I love the effects)

having loose filters and too much air in the joint can also make smoking harsh as the temperature causes the burn. also using tobacco as the temperature is higher.  chlorophyll in the leaf's too can cause this so trim your weed really well this will help a little.....  overloaded with nutes still is the biggest problem with quick drying too...    but this is just my opinion from experience
