I’ve recently been offered some young plants,

This is a dangerous position to be in in the UK I think Ellie. One Of the most important things to do when growing in a place where growing is prohibited is not tell anyone. By taking plants from someone, they know you're growing, and they might come back for those plants when they think they are finished growing. Whether you want them to or not, and there is not much you can do about it. Do you trust these people you're getting the plants from? 

Welcome to Percys BTW. I know my comment might seem harsh, but we have to be realistic for your safety. Tell whoever it is you're getting the plants off you have changed your mind and dont want to do it any more. Then just buy some seeds and do it yourself. It will be safer like that.

Welcome to Percy's dude!!. Seeds are what you want like macky said. They say always try and buy in cash, it's old school. If you have a local store or can drive a few miles try that, if not just change the name on address lol. 

What grow size you got available? Maybe start 2x2 or 3x3, cheap grow tents still have a few light leaks, but still ok for starters (duct tape seams). If anything  spend your money on the light!! Hlg, aray, Mars hydro, spider farmer.

Gonna need carbon filter for smell and extractor fan connected. 

Seeds for me would be og Kush, romberry (freedom of seeds), white widow (royal queen seeds). Alibongo seeds is a good site to start from. Hope some info here helps. Good luck dude and happy growing.

you want a

light, carbon filter , ducting , a inline fan , a oscillating fan , pots , soil or coir , ph meter ,some npk for veg , some npk for flowering & probably some cali mg depending on your water ph either ph down or ph up if your getting it from a uk tap probably ph down.

I may have missed a few things but that about the basics.

yeah if you take the plants from someone else you’ll kinda owe them one & they could turn up asking for weed when you really don’t want that. Good friendship can be ruined by weed let alone the fact he’ll probably tell a friend in secret and they tell a friend ect 

As said say you changed your mind & grow your own without any of your friends knowing in the long run you’ll be glad you did 

First buy the best grow light you can afford . And a grow space depends on how DIY savvy you are with the supplies you have hanging around or could barrow from work or if you have a empty room somewhere. You will need a fan or something to move the air around in you grow room/space . And filtration depends on who or where your neighbors are? I think that is the very basic needs for a grow except for the water supply.  I hope this helps out but I’m High AF texting this ..
