Hey all,

Here from Canada, heard about this place from Jordan Rivers podcast and it sounded good. After lurking a bit here I am. I have a background in water chemistry and field crop production so a lot of the technical concepts are in my mind but I got no experience in cannabis cultivation. I know I'm in for some bumps and bruises along the way but I'm betting it'll be worthwhile. Oh and btw me and cannabis have happily been traveling through life alongside with my family and friends for about 25 years now. I. Love. Cannabis.

About to run my first real grow inside a 8x4 tent (in a uninsulated garage) with a 600watt metal halide and tsl 3000 from Mars hydro (arriving end of August) . I got a spiderfarmer 1000 for seedlings, which should be arriving in a few days in seed form. I will try some non autos, feminized strains first, specifically durban poison, cheese dawg, double chocolate and gorilla girl.

I can only have 4 plants so I want to maximize my yield. Right now I moved 2 mature mk ultras from outside and placed them in the tent corner with the 600watt hps on a 12 and 12 and I'm on week 3. They are in soil. Been fertigating a normal 20l flower pot every 3 watering. It's been hot in the tent as it hit 32 degrees for a few hours the other day and it drops to about 16 at the coldest part of the night. Am running venting and a fan inside. Had a few bugs and used pyrethrin the other day, seemed to work.

I need to decide on my medium for the next 4 plants right away, I am really considering coco and perlite in a auto waterer or airpot, not sure what to do as hydroponic is seeming a bit challenging  for now. Any advice would be welcome about that or anything else.

Stoked to be here,

Cannapleleaf

wow you have a lot of space for your 4 plants. best of luck but to be honest a pro mix hp would be just fine. most new growers should not use coco as you'll require specialty nutrients and your going to have to water frequently. So go for large containers so you can get maximum yield for your plant. Also look into plant training as well.

Welcome to Percys man, glad you joined us mate!

Choosing medium in the first place is a tough choice.

If you're going to go coco, you will need a pH and ec/tds/pmm meter. You will need the pH meter for soil too though.

Coco will take daily maintenance, as it will need to be feed regularly, but if youre going for an auto watering system that will make things easier.

Once you get the number down, growing in coco is very easy, it just takes daily maintenance for feeding.

If you dont have time to tend to the plants every day, soil will be a better option.

Living soil is always the best bet, but can be complicated if there are problems in the grow.

Coco is easy to grow in, easy to fix problems, and grow good big tasty plants. Very hard to over water in coco too. As long as you get more than 10% run off with every feed, youre not likely to see any excess problems.

I love growing in coco, it is very easy, but its easy because I have experience with it.

Ultimately, its up to you, just pick what you have time for Smile We can help with everything else once the decision is made, so choose what you want! You have all the help you need here no matter which way you grow Smile

Welcome to Percy’s mate. I see Macky has already offered info on media so I’ll let that alone. Glad you decided to join us here and let’s grow some quality cannabis.

BTW, The Jordan River show was an absolute blast to do. He’s a great host and just an all around great person.

Hey all, thanks for the replies! My tent is huge due to a shipping mistake and I just went with it, maybe I'll put some other plants offside for fun. As for mediums I'm not afraid of the daily maintenance with coco and nutrient regimes. Loving spending time in the tent haha. Any issues with combining MH and hps light with a LED?

Depends on the LED and the footprint the lights will be covering

Welcome man, fellow Canadian (SK) here as well.

You can definitely combine the two types of lights but like Macky said, footprint is important. You don't wanna overdo it obviously (it is possible...) but In a large tent like yours, that probably won't be an issue, haha. I usually run two no name crappy 'blurple' LEDs alongside my 600W MH/HPS when I run it in my 4x4 to get more even canopy coverage, though something like 2x Mars SP150 would be more ideal for my situation.

@templegrowerjust finished putting a little 100 watt led in the far corner and will be checking regularly, here's a couple shots, in week 4 with the mk ultra from outside. Any tips I'm all ears!

Thanks all!

Yeah looks good man. The key is a nice even spread with maximum foliage exposure - no hot-spots (unless you like lopsided plants, haha). So however you manage that is totally up to you!

Thinking about it more now (and if you have the power, lol...Member He-Man?) that 600W HID on one side and the SF3000 on the other side (each basically covering a 4x4 footprint) would probably work pretty well. You could stick that little 100W LED wherever you might need some extra illumination but, those two lights should fit pretty well in a space like that. It's just 2x 4x4 tents without the middle wall after all so, that would probably be what I would try.

All that said, I am MED and have a 15 plant limit so I could fill that out no prob. But with only 4 plants... unless you do a gigantic scrog (which would be epic AF), that size might be a bit overkill. What I would totally suggest though is grow some veggies!!! Vegetables are plants too! Lol.

But yeah, my two cents. 👍

@templegrower nice thanks! Their lopsided because they never had any defoliation and were in the garden and just stretched towards the sun on their own. Epic af scrogg @ 4x8 you say... good to have goals! Someday. Thanks again, you folks are fantastic!

Checking in here and thanks again for the responses! I replaced the 600 watt hps with my new sp 3000 today. It was like 32 to 34 degrees every day in there because of the hps light. Now about 29 degrees at the hottest and about 40 to 50 % humidity. Watering 6.4 ph water every other day about 2 liters each as I suspect nute burn from fertigating at full strength until about 10 days ago.

Any issue regarding replacing the hps to led?

A couple of pictures...
