Hey, hey, hey!  We have ourselves Korean Natural Farming thread thanks to @Macky!  Now I am in NO WAY an expert at KNF and am very much an entry-level novice, but I am hoping this can be a place for us to share info and get questions/answers addressed for all things KNF. So I will jump in.

Chris Trump, along with others, make WCA or Water-soluble Calcium by roasting eggshells, separating the proteins/membrane (by winnowing away in the wind) from the eggshells and then dissolving the shells in vinegar to make calcium acetate after about 7-10 days (if my memory serves). It is then diluted in water at 1:1000. Now, I have used roasted and crushed eggshells in my outdoor garden for years by just spreading them on top of the soil under my roses where they will eventually be broken down and incorporated with no concern about the membrane proteins outside. However, I did not want to deal with the mess of the membranes or have concerns about mold from leftover proteins in my tiny grow closet.

So instead of using eggshells, I used crushed oyster shells. These are used to give chickens calcium so hens can form shells, its super cheap, and chemically the same as shells; about 96% of oyster shells is calcium carbonate (CaCO3), where eggshells are about 95% calcium carbonate. I had a bag of oyster shells laying around because I used to have chickens, but you can buy a bag of it in the US at wallyworld for literally a few dollars and have a lifetime supply of calcium.

Since I don't need much, I made a quart/liter of it in a mason jar, PLUS I put the jar in my grow space. A byproduct of the interaction of the calcium carbonate with vinegar is the off-gassing of CO2, so my plants really benefited from the process, as well as the end result.

Does it work? Yes. I have really been pushing my plants with light and nutes, and while my WCA was making, I found the start of 1 tiny spot of calcium deficiency on one leaf. I applied the WCA at 1:1000 (you can water it in or use as a foliar spray) and it immediately stopped the deficiency. It has been a couple of weeks now with no further sign of problems.

I ALSO diluted a batch AND added 1/2 teaspoon epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) per quart/liter  to make my own Cal-Mag solution. A gallon of that stuff costs about about $50 in the US, and mine cost less than a dollar. Seriously. True, mine does not have iron in it, but one can also dissolve iron and add that if desired.

So, a big thanks to Chris Trump and Master Cho for sharing the love with KNF, and to the HOHG crew for making the sharing of this info easier so we can all have healthier plants. I also love the fact that it is homemade. I hope this helps someone. Happy growing, everyone!

@bangswitch2a, here is how to make cheap, easy, and highly effective Cal-mag for a tiny fraction of purchase price. If you use egg shells, you first roast them and have to widow away the protein liner of the shell.  This is not needed if you use oyster shells. Also, oyster shells will introduce a little bacteria into your soil, too. It's a win-win all around!

I am just not sure here. If you head down this road, you have to recognize that you are not doing Korean Natural Farming (KNF) which uses inexpensive and readily natural ingredients to feed plants which has been tested, is tried and true. Personally, I would not start mixing this with vinegar because I don't have a chemistry background to know what the result would be.

That said, I suppose you could apply this to your plants but I have no experience with it and am not certain. If you do, your should recognize a few things.  This has magnesium carbonate (epsom salts are food-grade magnesium sulfate), which is very alkaline, some forms of it are not water soluble, and because this product it is for reptiles, you have no idea if it is contaminated with anything. I know that may sound reactionary, but we are consuming the plant material we grow (cannabis is a bio-accumulator) so you have to make your own decisions here. I am also not a chemist, so I am just not sure about the strength of the magnesium compared to the Ca here, and if not careful, too much Mg can lock-out Ca. The other thing is that particle size absolutely affects measurements because of the airspace between the particles.  There is a lot more of a fine powder in a teaspoon than a teaspoon of large granules.

Keep in mind that Epsom salts are food-grade and extremely inexpensive, and the recipe posted above absolutely works.

Apply at rates between 50 and 400 pounds per acre, or 2-10 pounds per 1000 square feet is what i find for application rates for it and im not sure how to find a usable ratio for indoors
