I was finally able to get the supplies to start the long process to make OHN. Here is a where I am at: I've been rehydrating dried ingredients in beer:

@im_sparky Sweet man, tell us more though mate? What are you doing here nay why? What ingredients are you using and why?

@macky OHN is a concoction of dry and fresh ingredients that have anti-microbrial properties against the baddies. The main ingredients are Angelica root, licorice root, cinnamon bark, garlic, ginger, and sometimes turmeric root. Each ingredient is used as one part, but Agelica is used as two parts in the solution so twice as much as each other individual ingredient which is why there are two jars of Angelica in the photo. The dry ingredients are first rehydrated in beer, then both the rehydrated and fresh ingredients are fermented for an initial 2 weeks.
After the fermentation period of a couple of weeks, distilled alcohol is used to extract the plant's compounds into separate tinctures. The process is repeated after draining off some of the tincture, then the ingredient is topped off with more alcohol, and allowed to extract for another two weeks, all the while one mixes each separate container daily. This whole process is repeated for five extractions (minimum of 12 weeks including the first fermentation). After that, the tinctures are combined and used at a rate of 1:1000 in a few different KNF applications.
Chris states the solution gets better with age so that it can be used at lower quantities over time, I think he said at half strength at 3 years of age. Apparently the ingredients have also been shown to be medicinal in humans, too.
I hope to post photos here of the process as it unfolds over the next several months. Later today (I hope) I will pulverize the garlic and ginger and get them fermenting, too.

@im_sparky very cool man! I want to do this eventually for sure. It is very good for gut health in humans.

@shonuff I know it takes a long time and a bit tedious, but seems like it is worth the effort. 👍

I stabilized the ferments with vodka today (80 proof) by filling the jars a couple of inches, stirring thoroughly, then filling the jar to about 7/8 with more vodka, and stirring again. This should stop the yeast fermentation from the beer so that extraction can occur later. Just as in Chris' example, I found mold growing on top of the ginger and stirred it in with the alcohol.
The odor of the garlic fermentation was extremely intense and filled the house with a heavy garlic smell in about 18 hours. As a result, I moved the garlic to the garage to finish fermentation. Now that the solutions are beginning to be stabilized, the jars have lids and there is no odor so they will stay indoors. The house smells fantastic from the odor of the jars being open for stirring -- like a Chinese apothecary. Delicious!
Although I thought I was following Chris' instructions exactly, I just realized I went two weeks on the initial fermentation when it should have been one week. I just misremembered in that extraction occurs every two weeks.
Now for the very laborious task of stirring every jar every day for the next several months as extraction begins. Hope to see you here in two weeks! Thanks for stopping by!

Ironic that it works on anaerobic pathogens when part of the process is fermentation. Does it work against molds? Various fungi? I'm curious about the selectivity.
Some of those might work well as a deodorant (not the garlic). 🙃
Nice project. Looking forward to finding out how effective it is for you.

@davetg01 I am new to KNF and am learning mostly through Chris Trump’s info on the web. I have not yet had the chance to get the Jadam book, so I am not sure of the exact answer to your question. However, given the ingredients, and that it is extracted into alcohol, I would assume so. It smells really great when I open the jars for extraction. Even the garlic at this point smells fantastic. It is just that the garlic had to ferment in the garage. 😛

@im_sparky NP. I guess we'll be learning together.
A few years back I grew some mushrooms 🍄 (Morels & 1 other). It was very convenient to be able to use hydrogen peroxide to kill off mold that tried to grow, and it did nothing to the mycelium. Haven't explored that area for MJ yet, but a natural solution seems like a good tool to grab hold of.
I read some papers on the anti-microbial activity of different natural extracts. Cinnamon was near the top of the list and was stronger than the antibiotic being used as the baseline! I've also observed that the use of lots of garlic will slow down the rate at which guacamole turns brown. It is an experiment worth doing - use maybe 2 tsp of fresh minced garlic 🧄 per large avocado 🥑 and a litte salt. Its best to use several avocados so you cant eat it all immediately.
I dont know anything about the selectivity. Nice that the OHN is. Best not to kill the good microbes.
