Hey all! I'm new to the forum after listening to all the grow guide episodes, and after a failed attempt at growing in soilless medium (I let it dry out during a busy stretch at work ugh), I'm jumping to the living soil side!

A few questions:

- do the fabric smart pots also work well with living soil, since the water retention is different?

- is a 10gal pot reasonable for a 2 plant indoor grow in a 3x3 tent?

- has anyone used Redbud soil? I'd be interested in hearing people's experiences

@eatsleepblaze76  Fabric pots will work with living soil but you don’t want the moisture to completely disappear from the soil but The black ones get hot outside but beige ones are available .   (2) 10 gal pots will be ok in a 3x3 tent or (4) 5 gal pots      Never used Redbuds soil ..I only used SD microbes living soil.

☝🏻 What he said but i am a big fan of living soil beds. Grassroots fabric beds is a good company if you can get your hands on them. They have a plastic lining inside so that the earth is not drying out too much on the sides. They also have big round fabric pots.

Happy growing @eatsleepblaze76

@eatsleepblaze76 I would suggest 4 plants in the 3x3 tent, less vegging time to get a full canopy, and if a plant has a problem you will only lose 25% of the crop rather than 50%. 10 gal would be better can go water only with them, 5 gal will work you might need to add a feeding or two it will depend on the size of your plants. I use plastic pots, i don't find any benefit added with the fabric ones.

Hi all, I’m also new to the process… I’m using 5gallon fabric pots with Sohum living soil and LED lighting. I have mobility issues so was looking for a means of growing with least physical input. I’m having varying results Quality is there but the weight is not. So this time I’ve kept the pots constantly moist and with 6 weeks to go we’ll see how that build goes!

My opinion is a bit different that what you have read above. Fabric pots are great and provide your roots with more air, and if large, should be lifted off the floor so that air can get under the pot (my 100-gallon pot is on a plastic pallet). I think that Grassroots pots are the best because of the liner around most, but not all, the circumference of the pot, but there is a wide strip around the lower edge of the circumference that does not have the plastic, again, to provide air. The liner maintains moisture and prevents loss during irrigation.

As for size and number and number of plants, it depends. It would be very difficult (not impossible) to keep living soil in 7 gallons or less. It can be done a bit more easily in 10 gallons.  I personally would only place a single plant in a 10-gallon pot, assuming you have height in the tent for it because the bigger the roots, the bigger the fruits. With a 10-gallon and a single plant, you could manage a water-only approach if you have excellent nutrition in the soil.  If not, you will have to feed. Also, if you are going to put more plants than one in a 10-gallon, you will definitely have to feed. If you check out @mitsos grows, he puts more plants in that that, but he has a tuned system and knows when and how much to feed.

@chrisa mentioned keeping the soil moist. This is essential in most all cases. The typical tent grower has some major misunderstandings about dry-backs which should only be done at certain times and carefully controlled. You should keep the soil evenly moist for a much better harvest. I strongly recommend at least an inexpensive ($12) soil moisture meter for houseplants -- it is good money spent for someone who is learning soil.

Hope that helps. Good luck, bon chance, bro!

Just for the record, my suggestion was to use 4 ten gallon pots with one plant in every pot 😀

@mitsos got it -- I misunderstood.  That is more in line with what I suggest. I think feeding would probably have to happen, at least in flower, depending on the fertility of the soil and how hungry the plant is.
